• The country’s net sown area increased from 7.98 million hectares in 1988-89 to 11.03<br />

million hectares in 2003-04.<br />

• The irrigated area increases from 0.87 million hectares in 1991-92 to 2.1 million<br />

hectares in 2003-04.<br />

Area contribution of crop groups are :<br />

Cereal crops 45%<br />

Oilseed crops 17%<br />

Peas and beans 20%<br />

Industrial crops 4%<br />

Culinary crops 4%<br />

Plantation crops 4%<br />

Miscellaneous crops 6%<br />

Agriculture Sector as a Vital Role:<br />

• During the past decades, Myanmar took measures to broaden its industrial and service<br />

bases.<br />

• But its economy have not yet diversify enough.<br />

• Therefore, agriculture sector still remains as a vital role in the national economy of<br />

Myanmar.<br />

• Development of agriculture has been considered as a base and all round development<br />

of other sectors of the economy.<br />

• Appropriate agriculture policy, strategic measures and objectives are formulated to<br />

improve the agriculture sector.<br />

Rice<br />

• To supply the rising demand of domestic utilization and surplus of rice, dry-season rice<br />

(summer rice) was introduced in 1992-93.<br />

• The country total paddy sown area showed increasing trend due to area expansion of<br />

summer rice.<br />

• In 2003-2004, the area planted to paddy amounts to 6.54 million hectares and total<br />

paddy production is estimated to be 23.11 million metric tons.<br />
