message
Dear fellow Bousteadians,
Reaching the half way point in the financial year 2010 has been
both encouraging and eventful for the Group.
I am pleased to inform that the Boustead Group recorded a profit
after tax of RM104 million for the first quarter of its 2010 financial
year, a marked improvement from the RM68 million achieved in
the first quarter of last year. These results are testament to our
strength and diversity of our business model.
In June this year, the Group marked a significant milestone by
undertaking a proposed acquisition of Pharmaniaga Berhad,
a member of UEM Group Berhad. I am confident this exercise
will place us on a stronger footing to build our pharmaceutical
arm and further elevate our presence in the growing healthcare
industry.
I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate
our subsidiary, UAC Berhad which was awarded the coveted
BrandLaureate for Best Brands in Product Branding
(Manufacturing of Cellulose Fibre Cement Boards). This accolade
by the prestigious Asia Pacific Brand Foundation is in recognition
of the brand’s strong position in Malaysia and the overseas
markets.
As we look at the year ahead, we are very optimistic with our
Divisions contributing to sustain their performance levels.
However, I urge all Boustedians to be more conscious to deliver
on their performance indicators in order to achieve Group wide
success. Teamwork and commitment should be the drive for all as
we aim to take the Group to greater heights.

Perjalanan Kumpulan menuju titik pertengahan tahun
kewangan 2010 adalah sangat menggalakkan dan penuh
dengan pelbagai peristiwa.
Dengan sukacitanya, saya ingin memaklumkan bahawa
Kumpulan Boustead telah mencatatkan keuntungan
selepas cukai sebanyak RM104 juta pada suku pertama
tahun kewangan 2010, satu peningkatan ketara
berbanding RM68 juta yang dicapai pada suku pertama
tahun lepas. Keputusan-keputusan ini adalah bukti
kekukuhan serta kepelbagaian model perniagaan kita.
Pada bulan Jun tahun ini, Kumpulan telah mencatatkan
satu peristiwa penting di mana ia telah mengumumkan
tindakan untuk membeli kepentingan Pharmaniaga
Berhad, ahli Kumpulan UEM Berhad. Saya yakin
usaha ini dapat mengukuhkan kedudukan kita dalam
membangunkan bahagian farmaseutikal dan juga
meningkatkan penglibatan kita dalam industri penjagaan
kesihatan yang sedang berkembang ini.
Saya juga ingin mengambil kesempatan ini untuk
mengucapkan tahniah kepada anak syarikat kita, UAC
Berhad di atas penganugerahan BrandLaureate untuk
Jenama Terbaik dalam Penjenamaan Produk (Pembuatan
- Papan Simen Serat Selulosa). Penghormatan oleh badan

sebagai tanda pengiktirafan kedudukan jenama ini yang
kukuh di pasaran Malaysia dan antarabangsa.

For his success in leading, building and evolving the Group, Y.Bhg. Tan
Sri Dato’ Lodin Wok Kamaruddin, Deputy Chairman/Group Managing
Director of Boustead Holdings Berhad was recently honoured with the
Malaysia Business Leadership Award 2010 : Conglomerate Company of
the Year.
Tan Sri Lodin received the award from Y.B. Dato' Seri Noh Omar, Minister
of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry at the 2nd Malaysia Business
Leadership Awards 2010 awards ceremony, held on 22 May 2010 at the
Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
The ceremony, jointly organised by the Kuala Lumpur Malay Chamber
of Commerce and The Leaders Magazine honoured the achievements
of various high profile business leaders in Malaysia and their immense
contributions to the country’s economy.

At a glittering black tie dinner held on 26 March 2010 at the Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur, Mr. Koo Hock Fee, CEO/Managing Director
of UAC Berhad (UAC) received the coveted BrandLaureate award for Best Brands in Product Branding (Manufacturing of Cellulose
Fibre Cement Boards) from the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation. Presenting the
award was Y.B. Senator Datuk Seri Idris Jala, Minister in the Prime Minister's
Department who was representing the Prime Minister.

L’Heritage receives
highest award
for best French
fine dining
The Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur’s French fine dining
outlet, L’Heritage received a plaque for the best
French fine dining for 2010/2011 from the Chaîne
Des Rôtisseurs, an international gastronomic society
founded in France in the 1950s. The plaque is the highest
token a restaurant can receive from the Confrérie.
The plaque was presented at a dinner held on 30 April
2010 at Royale Chulan. It was attended by a total of 43
members including the Bailli Delegue de Malaise - Y.Bhg.
Datuk Dr. Jagjit Singh, Mr. K. K. Rajah - Bailli De Putrajaya
and Y.Bhg. Datin Ingrid Schlumpf - Bailli De Regional
Malacca.

Chulan Kuala Lumpur (Royale Chulan) presented
His Majesty with a birthday cake. The theme for
the cake was designed according to His Majesty's
personal passion - sailing. The cake took two weeks
to complete. The base of the cake was a
fluffy butter cake with the sail boat made
from sugar craft.

Boustead signs
agreement to acquire
Pharmaniaga from UEM
Boustead Holdings Berhad (Boustead) recently signed a
share purchase agreement to acquire 86.81 interest in
Pharmaniaga Berhad (Pharmaniaga) from UEM Group Berhad
(UEM) for RM534 million cash. The move is in line with the
Group’s decision to strengthen its position in the pharmaceutical
industry.
The signing took place on 11 June 2010 at The Royale Chulan
Kuala Lumpur. Signing on behalf of Boustead were Deputy
Chairman/Group Managing Director, Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Lodin
Wok Kamaruddin and Director - Financial Services, Mr. Daniel
Ebinesan while UEM were represented by its Group Managing
Director/Chief Executive Officer, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Izzaddin Idris and
Senior General Manager, Pn. Lila Azmin Abdullah.

in Malaysia and is listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia
Securities.
BHIC signs
agreement to
acquire Contraves
from Rheinmetall
Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation Berhad
(BHIC), through its wholly-owned subsidiary,
BHIC Defence Technologies Sdn. Bhd. recently signed
a Share Sale Agreement to acquire 51% stake in
Contraves Advanced Devices Sdn. Bhd. (Contraves)
from Rheinmetall Defence (Rheinmetall) of Germany.
The partnership seeked to foster the growth of
high-tech production in Malaysia with the aim of
strengthening the country’s defence technology
industrial base and open additional opportunities
for exports. Both BHIC and Rheinmetall expected the
relationship to lead to better market access for its
products and technologies for ground, naval and air
force applications.
The signing ceremony was held on 7 June 2010 at The
Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur. BHIC was represented by
its Managing Director, Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ahmad
Ramli Hj. Mohd Nor while Rheinmetall was represented
by its Board Member, Mr. Shaun Liebenberg. Defence
Minister, Y.B. Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi
witnessed the signing.

BHIC participates in DSA 2010
Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation Berhad (BHIC) and its group of companies
participated in the 12th Defence Services Asia (DSA 2010) Exhibition and
Conference held between 19 to 22 April 2010 at the Putra World Trade Centre.
The Group exhibited its wide range of products and services including offshore
supply vessels, special well-testing and service vessel for the oil and gas sector;
naval ships such as Fast Troop Vessel, Fast Interceptor Craft and the proposed
Second Generation Patrol Vessel; as well as BHIC's capability in the repair and
maintenance of naval vessels including submarines, overhaul of weapons and
combat management systems.
DSA 2010 provided an excellent venue for the Group to showcase its products and
services to the domestic as well as the international market.

48th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 5 April
2010 at the Menara Boustead’s Conference Room to
obtain shareholders’ approval of several resolutions,
amongst which was to receive and adopt the audited
financial statements for the year ended 31 December
2009.
About 200 people, comprising shareholders & proxies,
Board of Directors, Heads of Departments, Senior
Management of the Boustead Group, auditors as well
as members of the media attended the event.
The AGM started with a presentation on the progress
and performance of the Group by Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Dato’
Lodin Wok Kamaruddin, Deputy Chairman/Group
Managing Director of Boustead. This was followed by
a question & answer session which went smoothly.
All 11 resolutions put to the meeting were passed
unanimously.
Also held on the same day was the company’s
Extraordinary General Meeting.

New Delhi, India from 15 to 19 April. This annual
conference was an opportunity for UAC Berhad
(UAC) and its major distributors from Peninsular
Malaysia to review and discuss matters of

Senior Officers' Meeting
Boustead Sissons Paints Sdn. Bhd. (Boustead Sissons) and UAC
Berhad (UAC) participated in Public Works Department (JKR)
Senior Officers’ Meeting held from 7 to 8 June 2010 at the Impiana
Hotel in Ipoh, Perak.
The event was officiated by Works Minister, Y.B. Dato’ Shaziman Abu
Mansor and attended by 350 senior JKR staff.
During the two-day event, Boustead Sissons and UAC managed to
showcase and briefed JKR top personnel on their range of products.

Best described as a diamond in the rough during
the early years of his life, Shoib Abdullah
exemplifies how true grit, determination and
an undying willingness to learn can go above
and beyond the traditional route of academia
achievements.
Born on May 15, 1947 in Ipoh, Perak to a
traditional blue collar household, Shoib Abdullah
began his career in the Armed Forces as an Officer
Cadet and went on to become an Acting Captain
before leaving to enter the world of plantations.
He continues to play a role in the development of
the local plantation industry even after 38 years
of being in this industry.
Qualifications
• Secondary - Anderson School, Ipoh 1960-1965.
• Attended Royal Military College 1966-1967 as
officer cadet.
• Completed jungle warfare school in Papakura,
New Zealand.
• Completed tactical, mortar and weapons training
courses at Port Dickson Training School.

• As a soldier, was involved in the great floods in 1969 and the
May 13 incident.
• Rose to the call of duty to fight against the Communist Party
Malaysia including the threats in Sarawak.
• On Sabah soil, was stationed with the security division to
safeguard Malaysian waters against illegal barter trading
from the Philippines.
• Acting Captain for the Royal Malaysian Rangers from 1966
until 1972.
• First foray into the plantation industry was in 1972 as a
Planter at Riverview Rubber Estate, Perak and after 22
years of service, left in 1994 holding the position of General
Manager. First Malaysian to take over from a Scottish
planter.
• Spent a year as Technical Adviser Operations, PT Poliplant –
an Indonesian plantation company before joining Boustead
Estates Agency as General Manager looking after plantation
operations.
• Was Chairman of the Perak Planters Association (PPA) in
1987 and was council member of UPAM and MAPA between
1986 to 1989.
Achievements
• Anderson School, Victor Laurdem in Athletics from 1964 to
1965.
• Represented Perak School and Perak state in athletics from
1964 to 1965 and was awarded the Perak Schools Colours
in 1965.
• Selected as a trialist in Athletics for the SEA Games in 1965
which was held in Kuala Lumpur.
• Represented the Armed Forces in Athletics and Rugby.
• Took Armed Forces Rugby team to a win in the Malaysian
Cup Final in 1972 where he kicked the Armed Forces to
victory beating Mighty Selangor 9-3 and he was awarded
Armed Forces Colours in 1972.

The participants went through a series of role plays and other
practical activities to understand what effective coaching really
requires. Delivered by a motivating corporate coach with many
interesting anecdotes and real life coaching examples, the
programme offered an effective methodology for managers to
follow when coaching their teams to produce outstanding results.
By the end of the programme, participants expressed their renewed
confidence in dealing with performance issues with their teams.
They felt capable of coaching for improvement and affecting
positive change at work.

Our department successfully held a 3D/2N
teambuilding session on 25 - 27 June 2010 at
the The Royale Bintang Resort & Spa Seremban.
Apart from improving work performance, team
work, communication and fostering team spirit, our
teambuilding objective was to reward our staff with a
fun and adventurous day out in appreciation of their
hard work.
Day 1 We departed in the morning by a coach
after a hearty breakfast at the office and reached our
destination within one hour. Upon arrival at the hotel,
we were given a short briefing on the hotel’s safety
procedures by our teambuilding facilitator, Dr. A. Kishu.
We then adjourned for lunch and later headed to the
seminar room for our ice-breaking activities which
included ‘Emotional Intelligence Awareness,’ ‘Colour
Characters’ and ‘Early Team Formation.’ These activities
helped each team member to identify their weaknesses
and learnt how each team member actually thinks and
why do they act in a certain manner.
We then headed to the Seremban Parade for our
bowling session. Everyone had a great deal of fun
trying to attain a perfect score. Through this activity,
we hoped to foster the spirit of ‘we are a family’
amongst our staff and at the same time brush up our
bowling skills.
After a sumptuous BBQ dinner, we had another
outdoor activity called ‘Star Navigation’ where we
learnt on how to use a compass and read map to
find clues. This activity enabled us to experience the
profound shift from working independently to working
interdependently to achieve a common goal.
We ended our first day with a supper while watching
the World Cup match (Brazil against Portugal).
Day 2 We spent our second day mostly outdoor
with our first trip to the historical Museum Lukut in Kota
Lukut, Port Dickson. We're so excited to see an array of
relics and artifacts originated from the tin mining days.

We then proceeded to the ATM Museum, also known
as ‘Muzium Tentera Darat’, which houses a wide range
of former combat vehicles, planes and artillery. One
of the best attractions in the museum was the subway
tunnel, which simulate those used by the communists
in the older days. The visits to both museums were very
enlightening, educational and extremely enjoyable.
Our next destination was Cape Rachado or Tanjung Tuan
in Malacca where the country’s oldest lighthouse was
located. We then stopped at Casa Rachado Resort to have
a wonderful Minang

while enjoying the
view of the sea and
light gentle breeze.
Next, we made a
visit to the Melaka
Tropical Fruit Farm
in Sg. Udang before
taking a cruise down Malacca River. This relaxing and
informative tour whisked us past many Dutch-styled

Day 3 Our third day was spent indoor with our own activity - puzzle solving. It was
fun to see team members motivating and helping each other to complete the puzzle.
We then had a prize giving session for our bowling winners, followed by a presentation
of a token of appreciation to one of our long service staff. We ended our final day with
a post mortem on our teambuilding session.
Overall, we found the teambuilding fun, motivational and rewarding. Leadership
qualities of certain individuals became evident over the three days. All in all the
exercise was a huge success for our department.

the Curve hosts Fashion Week
the Curve hosted a Fashion Week themed ‘The Green Party’
on 6 - 9 May 2010 where its Centre Court was transformed
to exude a springtime feel complete with vibrant splashes of
green. It was also complemented with a stylish white runway.
Personifying true glamour, the Fashion Week Gala Night was
enhanced with the presence of popular local celebrities such as
Tengku Azura and Nasha Aziz who strutted down the runway.
Hosted by the beautiful Sarimah Ibrahim, the fashion show
boasted a diverse array of brands such as August 8, Binwani’s,
Debenhams, Elements, Focus Point, Girls, G2000, Habib,
Kitschen, Le Ann Maxima, Metrojaya, Nichii, to name a few. The
models’ fabulous hairstyles were sponsored by Hair Kunst while
make-up was sponsored by Shiseido.
Guests were given a goodie bag each with vouchers and gifts
from August 8, Bluunis, B.Ha Lingerie, Blush, Bubba Gump, City
Chain, IDEKO, Juiceworks, Kenny Rogers, Kim Gary, Liz Claiborne,
Optical 88, Osh Kosh B’gosh, Sakaesushi and The Nail Shop.
The Fashion Week continued with individual tenants’ shows on
Saturday and Sunday which attracted a huge crowd.

On 26 April 2010, The Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur (Royale Chulan) celebrated Secretaries Day
featuring snazzy jazz diva Noryn Aziz at The Taming Sari Grand Ballroom and hosted by Mix
FM Breakfast Show host Rudy whom without a doubt liven up the afternoon with his spontaneous
on-stage acts. The afternoon also featured a fashion show showcasing MORGAN®‘s 2010 Spring/
Summer collection by the Miss Universe Malaysia® 2010 contestants.

Boustead's Pintar Programme
In 2007, as part of the GLC Transformation programme and
commitment towards the community, Boustead Holdings
Berhad (Boustead) under the PINTAR programme had adopted
SK Mutiara Perdana, Bayan Lepas, Penang for the period of
three years (2007 - 2009). During the engagement, Boustead
had contributed more than RM50,000 for the school to run
various programmes such as additional classes, motivational
camps, seminars and 'lawatan sambil belajar.' In March 2010,
the PINTAR Mobile Unit visited Boustead’s school where they
received overwhelming welcome from the students.

Moving forward, Boustead had adopted another three schools
for the coming three years (2010 - 2012). The schools which are
located within the vicinity of the Army Camp are:
i. S.K. Anak-Anak Angkatan Tentera, Tok Jalai, Jitra, Kedah.
ii. S.K. Kem Lapangan Terbang, Sungai Petani, Kedah.
iii. S.K. Sultan Yussuf Askar Melayu Diraja, Taiping, Perak.
Boustead will continue to contribute and participate in the
educational programmes conducted by the schools. It is hoped
that these programmes can improve the well-being of Armed
Forces children through the numerous activities supported.
Royale Sports Carnival 2010
It was an eventful weekend at The Royale Bintang
Kuala Lumpur on 16 May 2010 as the hotel played
host to the Royale Sports Carnival which was an
annual event for The Royale Bintang Group of Hotels
& Resorts. The hotel was bustling with outdoor and
indoor matches played in the true spirit of 1 Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur participated in a variety of games
which included football, chess, table tennis and

bowling. The highlight of the event was the closing
ceremony attended by Deputy Chairman/Group
Managing Director of Boustead Holdings Berhad,
Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Dato' Lodin Wok Kamaruddin. The
evening saw colourful and spectacular performances
by the respective hotels. The overall champion
of the games went to The Royale Bintang Kuala
Lumpur with their home ground advantage. Next
year, the games will be hosted by The Royale Chulan
Kuala Lumpur.

Pada 24 April 2010, Kelab Sukan Boustead (KSB) telah
menganjurkan Futsal KSB ’Soccerstar’ 2010 bertempat
di Soccer XL, Segambut. Kejohanan yang bermula dari pukul
8.00 pagi dan berakhir pada pukul 3.00 petang itu telah
disertai seramai 180 ahli KSB yang terdiri dari 18 pasukan
lelaki dan 4 pasukan wanita. Berikut adalah senarai para

Worries while flying
Two statisticians were travelling in
an airplane from Los Angeles to New
York. About an hour into the flight,
the pilot announced that they had
lost an engine, but don’t worry, there
are three left.
However, instead of 5 hours it would
take 7 hours to get to New York.
A little later, he announced that a
second engine failed, and they still
had two left, but it would take 10
hours to get to New York.
Somewhat later, the pilot again came
on the intercom and announced that
a third engine had died. Never fear, he
announced, because the plane could
fly on a single engine.
However, it would now take 18 hours
to get to New York. At this point,
one statistician turned to the other
and said, “Gee, I hope we don’t lose
that last engine, or we’ll be up here
forever!”
Confused people
In a psychiatrist’s waiting room two
patients were having a conversation.
One said to the other, “Why are you
here?”
The second answered, “I’m Napoleon,
so the doctor told me to come here.”
The first was curious and asked, “How
do you know that you’re Napoleon?”
The second responded, “God told me
I was.”
At this point, a patient on the other
side of the room shouted, “NO I
DIDN’T!”
Visa to China
A senior minister called and had a
question about the documents he
needed in order to fly to China. After
a lengthy discussion about passports,
I reminded him that he needed a
visa.
“Oh, no I don’t. I’ve been to China
many times and never had to have
one of those.”
I double checked and sure enough, his
stay required a visa. When I told him
this he said, “Look, I’ve been to China
four times and every time they have
accepted my American Express."
A barber’s tale
A guy stuck his head into a barber
shop and asked, “How long before I
can get a haircut?” The barber looked
around the shop and said, “About two
hours.” The guy left.
A few days later, the same guy stuck
his head in the door and asked, “How
long before I can get a haircut?” The
barber looked around at the shop full
of customers and said, “About three
hours.” The guy left.
A week later, the same guy stuck his
head in the shop and asked, “How
long before I can get a haircut?” The
barber looked around the shop and
said, “About an hour and half.” The
guy left.
The barber looked over at a friend in
the shop and said, “Hey Bill, do me a
favour, will ‘ya? Follow that guy and
see where he goes. He keeps asking
how long he has to wait for a haircut,
but then doesn’t ever come back.”
A little while later, Bill came back into
the shop, laughing hysterically. The
barber asked, “Bill, where did he go
when he left here?”
Bill looked up, tears in his eyes and
said, “Your house.”
A New Year joke
A young man at a New Year’s party
turned to his friend and asked for a
cigarette.
"I thought you made a New Year’s
resolution to quit smoking," his friend
said.
"I’m in the process of quitting," the
man said. "Right now, I am in the
middle of phase one."
"What’s phase one?"
"I’ve quit buying."

The other day at work I ran into
Bob. We chatted over lunch and he
dropped a bombsell on me.
“Rodney” he said, “Becky and I are
going to get a divorce”.
I was stunned. “Why? What happened,
you two seem so happy together”
“Well” he said, “ever since we got
married, my wife has tried to change
me. She got me to stop drinking,
smoking, running around at all hours
of the night and more. She taught me
how to dress well, enjoy the fine arts,
gourmet cooking, classical music and
how to invest in the stock market.”
“Are you a little bitter because she
spent so much time trying to change
you.” I probed.
“Nah, I’m not bitter. Now that I’m so
improved, she just isn’t good enough
for me.”

On 19 April 2010, four staff from Group Internal Audit,
Boustead Holdings Berhad & five staff from Boustead
Rimba Nilai Sdn. Bhd. gathered at Kinabalu Park
on their mission to conquer Mount Kinabalu, the tallest
mountain in Southeast Asia which is 4,095.2m above sea
level.
We started our climb at around 8.30am the next morning
from Timpohon Gate (1,866m above sea level). It was a 6km
trail to the next checkpoint at Laban Rata. The first 4km went
quite well for us, but the hardest part was yet to come. The
last 2km was very steep and strenuous, but doable. Breathing
became much more difficult at high altitude, which made
it even harder. We managed to get to Laban Rata (3,300m
above sea level) after a total of 4½ hours climb. The trail was
quite good, mostly through jungle with little in the way of
view and often on steps made of wood or carved into the
rock. So, you have to watch your steps carefully.
We rested at Laban Rata prior to continuing our climb to
reach the Kinabalu Peak. The temperature was below 10°C
and most of us did not manage to get any sleep despite the
very long hours of climbing. To complete our mission, we had
to climb another 2.7km to the summit.
The second day climb started at 2.30am and it was very dark,
with torchlights and ropes to guide us up to the summit.
After hours of climbing in the dark,
we reached the final checkpoint and
continued climbing over bare granite
slabs that stretched endlessly ahead. At
around 5am to 6am, we reached the
summit of Low’s Peak (altitude of 4,095m
above sea level), which is the highest
point of Mount Kinabalu. It was bitterly
cold at the top as dawn gradually crept
over the horizon, illuminating the darkness
with the light of a new day. The climb was
worth it!
