(1823-1910), Professor of History in this <strong>University</strong><br />

and donor of the<br />

Goldwin Smith Fund, from a part of the income ofwhich the salaries<br />

pertaining to these chairs are paid. They are the Goldwin Smith<br />

Professorships of English Literature, American History, English<br />

History, Latin, and Political Science. The three first named were<br />

held in 1924-25 respectively by Martin Wright Sampson, Charles<br />

Henry Hull, and Wallace Notestein ; the other two were temporarily<br />

vacant.<br />

UsThe John Stambaugh Professorship of History was estab<br />

lished and endowed by John Stambaugh, of the Class of 1884, in 1919.<br />

It was held in 1924-25 by Carl Becker.<br />

The World War Memorial Professorships are eight chairs<br />

established by the Trustees to commemorate the services of Cor-<br />

nellians in the World War : one professorship in the College of Archi<br />

tecture, two in the College of Arts and Sciences, two in the College of<br />

Engineering, one in the Graduate School, one in the College of Law,<br />

and one in the Ithaca division of the Medical College; established<br />

and endowed with a part of the Semi-Centennial Endowment Fund<br />

in 1920. They were held in 1924-25 respectively by Albert Charles<br />

Phelps, Wilder Dwight Bancroft, Othon Goepp Guerlac, Ernest<br />

William Schoder, Seymour Stanton Garrett, Ernest Merritt, George<br />

Gleason Bogert, and Sutherland Simpson.<br />

The Andrew Dickson White Professorship was established by<br />

the Trustees on April 2, 192 1, in recognition of the gift of $125,000<br />

to the <strong>University</strong> by a Yale alumnus, as a part of the Semi-Centennial<br />

Endowment Fund, for the purpose of endowing a professorship. It<br />

was held in 1924-25 by Francke Huntington Bosworth, jr.<br />

Memorial Professorships bearing<br />

the Classes of 1920, 1921, 1922, and 1923 were established by the<br />

Trustees on April 2, 192 1, in recognition of the pledge, by each of<br />

those four classes, of more than $125,000 to the Alumni Fund forthe<br />

endowment of a professorship. Appointments to these chairs are not<br />

yet made.<br />

The Marc Eidlitz Instructorship in Civil Engineering was<br />

established in 19 19 and endowed by Otto M. Eidlitz of the Class of<br />

1881. It was held in 1924-25 by Eric Vail Howell.<br />

The Sophie Washburn French Instructorship was established<br />

in 1923. It is endowed with a gift of the late Frank S. Washburn of<br />

the class of 1883.<br />

SAGE CHAPEL: THE DEAN SAGE SERMON FUND<br />

Sage Chapel was built by Henry W. Sage in 1874. The Board of<br />

Trustees has made several additions. A memorial antechapel at<br />

the northwest corner was built by the Trustees and the Estate of<br />

Jennie McGraw Fiske in 1883 in memory of Ezra <strong>Cornell</strong>, John<br />

McGraw,<br />

and Jennie McGraw Fiske. William H. Sage has made<br />

general gifts, including an organ and the present interior decoration of<br />

the chapel. The Dean Sage Sermon Fund of seventy-five thousand
