I asked my family recently, which
ere their favorites of my recipes.
y husband chose steak with sautéed
nions and mushrooms. Big surprise
here. Sons Ivan (18) and Matt (16)
hose beef stew and hot dog soup,
espectively.
I have lots of theories why each one
hose the recipe they did, but there
s one common factor that actually
oesn’t have much to do with the
ecipe itself.
It’s the mealtime.
We’re a sit-down together for dinner
family. We make a point of it, not
nce a week or twice a week, but every
ight. The TV gets turned off and we
ring our stories of the day with us to
he table.
Sometimes we tell jokes, sometimes
e tell stories. Sometimes one person
eeds to talk and the rest of us listen.
e’ve had some wonderful debates,
nd on a rare occasion – a good old
ashioned argument. We’ve revisited
he past, imagined the future and tried
o figure out the present.
It certainly doesn’t hurt that my
amily is pretty generous with the
ompliments when they like what
hey’re eating, and over time, they’ve
earned to slow down enough to
ctually taste the food that’s flying
ver their tongues.
When my husband and I were wed
it was a second marriage for both
f us. Mealtimes were in some part
esponsible for the successful blending
f our two families. It’s where we did
he major negotiating, laid down the
aw, set things straight and where the
oys had a forum for questioning and
hallenging. All under the comfortable
nd secure blanket of mealtime.
When my grandfather, grandmother
nd then father died, it was sitting at
he table with my family that we were
ble to remember them and share our
rief.
When I was diagnosed with diabetes
type 2) a few years ago, it was around
the table that we, as a family, learned
how to accommodate and accept my
disease.
Birthdays, weddings and graduations
were all celebrated around tables.
Homework, projects and experiments
were all conducted around the table,
competing for space with the snack
bowls and drinks. And then there
were the board games, sometimes
even by candlelight, when the power
had gone out because of a storm.
Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had some
good conversations in the living room,
in the car, in my husbands office, and
even from either side of the bathroom
door. But around the kitchen table,
with the people I love, and sharing a
delicious meal – that’s my favorite.
A very simple recipe that kids love.
I will devote future articles to steak
and stews, look for them!
Hot Dog Soup
1 package hot dogs (any type)
2 cups dried elbow macaroni
1 family size can tomato soup
Equal amount of milk
Dash of Worcestershire sauce
Garlic powder
Prepare the macaroni according to
directions on the package. Slice the
hotdogs and fry them in a large frying
pan with just a little oil. (You could
also grill them, or use leftover hot
dogs from the grill) Cook them until
they are charred to taste. Once you
have drained the cooked macaroni,
put them back in the pot you cooked
them in and add the hot dogs. Add
the tomato soup and milk and stir.
Add a dash of Worcestershire sauce
and just a little sprinkle of garlic
powder. Heat through over low heat
until the soup is hot and serve. Feeds
1 short-ish woman and 3-large men.
Leftovers: store in sealed container.
Heats up very nicely – makes a great
lunch for work!
Next week: Super snacks for after
school.
Thanks to everyone who supported
me in the recent school election.
Dodge donation presented to Boosters
The South Central Calhoun Boosters received a check for $5,000 presented at half-time at the Titan game on Sept. 9. The money was
raised through a Dodge promotion conducted by Champion Chrysler in Rockwell City in which Dodge donated $20 for each person who
took a test drive in a new vehicle prior to the Sept. 2 game, up to a maximum of $5,000. The maximum was reached by participants in the
test drive promotion. Pictured (left to right) Joe Berger, Darin Putney, Tina Meth-Farrington, Dawn Clark, Jody Ellis, Tom Campbell and
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a
9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3
boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers
1 through 9 must fi ll each row,
column and box. Each number can
appear only once in each row, column
and box. You can fi gure out
the order in which the numbers will
appear by using the numeric clues
already provided in the boxes. The
more numbers you name, the easier
it gets to solve the puzzle!
