I. <strong>Technology</strong> Background<br />

Date <strong>of</strong> Introduction 3M Water Infrastructure just introduced Scotchkote Spray-In-Place Pipe (SIPP)<br />

269 Coating at the ASCE Pipeline 2009 conference in San Diego. The original<br />

<strong>for</strong>mulation developed by E. Wood, known as Copon Hycote 169HB was a<br />

polyurethane and not capable <strong>of</strong> meeting the NSF 61 standard, according to 3M<br />

representatives.<br />

Utilization Rates The original Copon Hycote 169HB is actively being used in the UK and Canada.<br />

About 200 miles have been lined, bulk <strong>of</strong> which is in UK. The new Scotchkote<br />

SIPP 269 has no known uses as <strong>of</strong> the time <strong>of</strong> this report.<br />

Description <strong>of</strong> <strong>Main</strong><br />

Features<br />

Scotchkote SIPP 269 is a two component coating specifically designed <strong>for</strong> use in<br />

pipeline applications and is available as a grey finish. The material has low<br />

viscosity characteristics <strong>for</strong> pumping to remote spray head locations and is<br />

moisture tolerant to provide high build slump resistant coatings with strong<br />

adhesion characteristics. The gel time at 68 o F is 120 seconds, cure time <strong>for</strong> CCTV<br />

inspection is 10 minutes, and ready <strong>for</strong> return to service in 60 minutes. It is made<br />

<strong>of</strong> 100% solids and has no VOCs. Based on the material properties, all <strong>of</strong> which<br />

are short term values, this polyurea coating will primarily be suitable as an inner<br />

corrosion barrier or a semi-structural (Class II) liner. The low elastic modulus<br />

means the liner will act as an interactive liner and be dependent on the host pipe to<br />

carry the internal pressure.<br />
