Based on the gra<strong>in</strong> size distribution, both the backfill and bedd<strong>in</strong>g soils can be considered to be sandy<br />

soils. The flatter slopes <strong>of</strong> the result<strong>in</strong>g gradation curves suggest that the bedd<strong>in</strong>g and surround<strong>in</strong>g soil<br />

are well-graded.<br />

5.2.5.2 Soil Specific Gravity and Absorption. This standard test<strong>in</strong>g method is used to calculate the<br />

density, relative density, and absorption <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e aggregates. Soil material weigh<strong>in</strong>g 500 g was taken from<br />

each <strong>of</strong> the six samples for perform<strong>in</strong>g the needed tests. The results are listed <strong>in</strong> Table 5-2.<br />
