Two specially designed, open-ended, conical steel caps filled with high temperature silicon and polyurea<br />

were prepared and used to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the seal at the ends <strong>of</strong> the test specimens (Figures 4-16 and 4-17).<br />

The caps were pressed aga<strong>in</strong>st each end <strong>of</strong> the pipe specimen us<strong>in</strong>g threaded rods and were designed to<br />

ensure that the annular space between the <strong>in</strong>ner wall <strong>of</strong> the pipe and outer wall <strong>of</strong> the l<strong>in</strong>er was sealed.<br />

This high level <strong>of</strong> effort and precision was considered paramount to allow effective seal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the annulus<br />

under elevated <strong>in</strong>ternal pressure, while allow<strong>in</strong>g free access to the <strong>in</strong>terior <strong>of</strong> the pipe for conduct<strong>in</strong>g<br />

frequent deformation measurements <strong>of</strong> the l<strong>in</strong>er.<br />

A pressure gage was connected to one <strong>of</strong> the threaded holes and the other was fitted with a quick<br />

connector for apply<strong>in</strong>g water pressure (Figure 4-18). A nitrogen gas pressure bladder system was used to<br />

convert normal water supply pressure to a high water pressure for the test<strong>in</strong>g (4-19).<br />
