Gold Hill Elementary School PTA Newsletter | A National Blue Ribbon School
Welcome Back
Welcome back to all returning families and a big
WELCOME to all new families. We are very excited for
the new school year and to be serving as Co-Presidents
of the PTA.
This year, more than ever, the PTA needs YOUR help.
With the state budget crisis, PTA support is more critical
than ever before. The PTA raises funds to provide a
wide range of educational enrichment programs for the
students. Money raised through PTA membership, Restaurant Nights, Blue Ice
and fundraisers (such as the successful Boosterthon FunRun) help to fund class trips, Odyssey
Computer, Lego Education, Engineering is Elementary, Music and Art instruction to all grades,
books, classroom supplies, and much, much more. During the past years, the PTA has
provided learning opportunities that may have otherwise been unavailable to our children.
As the new school year begins, we once again ask for your support so that we can continue
making resource and learning opportunities available to our children.
For the PTA to be effective and truly representative of the school, everyone’s participation
is essential. Many parents feel that they cannot participate in the PTA because they cannot
come to meetings or be on campus during the day. We want everyone to feel that they are
part of the Gold Hill Community. Whether you have 30 minutes or a couple of hours, your
ideas, your time, and your talents are truly needed. We can match your time constraints and
interests to needed tasks. There are endless possibilities and ways you can help.
Keep in mind that by volunteering, you will get to enjoy interacting with the kids, become
friends with other parents, and accomplish things that truly make a difference. We have
many ways in which Moms, Dads, Aunts, Uncles, and Grandparents can contribute to the
Gold Hill community. Research shows that students whose parents are involved in their
education have better grades and fewer discipline problems. We promise that the time
you give to the PTA and the school will be worth your while—and fun! Please consider
volunteering, it really does make a difference in the lives of all our children!
The PTA welcomes you to join our meetings to raise your concerns and contribute your ideas
and talents to better our school. Meetings will be held on the Third Tuesday each month at
7:45am in the school cafeteria. All meeting dates and activities will be posted regularly on
the PTA school bulletin board, Website, Facebook and in the PTA newsletter —The Beeline.
We would like to thank you in advance for your support. If you have any questions, please
do not hesitate to contact us. Have a wonderful school year and we hope to see you at our
September 18th meeting.
2012‐13 Fundraiser
We’re raising funds for: Mathematic References, Running track repairs, EIE, Odyssey
The Boosterthon Fun Run program is a healthy alternative to traditional product sales that raises much‐
needed funds for our school and many others across America. The nine‐day Boosterthon Program also
promotes three specific values during the fun‐filled experience: Fitness, Leadership, and Character.
This year’s character theme is “HIGHWAY USA,” and it’s all about CHOICES! Our students will be building
character by learning five important choices to make.
Boosterthon Fun Run Basics
and conclude on Wednesday Oct. 3rd with the Boosterthon Fun Run event.
Every student participates in the Fun Run, regardless of pledges raised, and receives a “Boosterthon All‐Star”
t‐shirt.
Enter your pledges at FUNRUN.COM. Each student has his/her own safe and secure Boosterthon Fun Run
webpage to log in pledges and watch character videos. Sponsors will also have the ability to pay their pledges
online. All pledges are tax‐deductible!
The Boosterthon Fun Run Team spends 250‐300 hours organizing the event, freeing up our teachers and
administrators to focus on education!
Students will be getting pledges towards the number of laps they will run at the
Boosterthon Fun Run. Students will run between 25‐35 laps. 35 is the lap cap.
• Connect your child to sponsors—friends & family—who can give a pledge.
• Come and cheer on your child at the Boosterthon Fun Run on Wednesday Oct 3rd!
• Go to www.boosterthon.com to learn more about the Boosterthon Fun Run or connect at
Welcome back to school GHES parents
and students! I hope you all had a fun,
relaxing and safe summer. Duty Free Lunch
will begin this year on Friday, September 21st.
Duty Free Lunch is a service the PTA coordinates in order
to provide teachers the opportunity to participate in
conferences, complete work, or to simply have some
free time during their lunch period on Fridays. The PTA is
asking each class to provide five volunteers for an hour
and a half on the one or two dates your class may be
assigned throughout the year. Please be on the lookout for
an email from your room parent and consider volunteering
your time. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Your
time and service is greatly appreciated. I look forward to a
wonderful year.
By law, school meals must be based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Schools across the country will make changes in the lunch program in the fall of 2012.
Schools serve more of the healthy foods students need:
Whole Grains Students need more whole grains for fiber and other nutrients. Look for whole
Fruits and
Vegetables
Low-fat and
Fat-free Milk
Page 10 | September 2012 | The BeeLine
grain pasta, bread, pizza, and cereals in schools.
Variety of color and types does a body good. Every lunch will include both
fruits and vegetables and a wide variety of types will be offered each week.
In schools using the “Offer vs. Serve” program at lunch, students must take at
least ½ cup of fruit and/or vegetable.
Low fat and fat-free milk have all the nutrients without extra calories and fat.
All schools will offer fat free (flavored or unflavored) and low-fat (unflavored
only) milk.
Schools serve less of the foods students don’t need:
Trans Fat Trans fats are not good for your heart and raise cholesterol. Schools are
eliminating foods with added trans fats.
Sugar High sugar foods provide extra calories and little nutrition. Look for healthy
cereals with little sugar and whole grain desserts low in sugar.
Sodium Most students consume double the recommended amount of salt. Schools
meals are seasoned with herbs, spices and other flavorings in place of sodium.
Condiments Condiments are a common source of fat, salt and sugar. Schools will control
portions and offer lower fat versions of condiments.
In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race,
Healthy meals are important at home.
Your children are learning eating habits that
will last a lifetime!
Try whole grain versions of your
favorites: pastas, cereals, tortillas, etc.
Have fruits and vegetables on hand
and ready to eat for a snack.
Offer low-fat or fat-free milk at every
meal.
Make healthier versions of fast foods at
home.
Grill, broil, or bake lean protein.
 Look for great tasting, low-sugar
cereals and desserts.
Try seasoning foods with more herbs
and spices.
Eat at home as a family more often.
Encourage breakfast
