Festival boasts a stellar lineup
Event expands
throughout region
By Nick Roth
The Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival
opens next month with a
lineup of events that will
light up venues from Rehoboth
Beach to Lewes.
The festival, now in its 23rd year, is
offering a growing list of events along
the Route 1 corridor and into Lewes as
organizers work to provide the best experience
possible to its legion of fans.
Several shows during this year’s festivities,
Oct. 11-14, will take place in
Cape Henlopen High School’s state-of-
the-art 865-seat theater, with others
slated for Timothy’s Tap House and
Old Bay Steakhouse on Route 1.
“It would be a shame not to use the
theater,” said festival President Denny
Santangini. “We are so happy to have
the opportunity to see how wonderful
the theater really is.”
This year’s event will kick off with
three-time Grammy Award nominee
Boney James at the Cape Henlopen
Theatre Thursday, Oct. 11. Tickets are
$62 and $65. The saxophonist has
toured with The Isley Brothers, Morris
Day, Randy Crawford and Teena Marie,
and has also embarked on a solo tour.
The theater is perfectly equipped for
this type of event,” Santangini said. It
features a large stage, high-quality
acoustics, lighting and sound and comfortable
seating.
Also featured on the Cape stage will
be two mashup shows - Rehoboth
Beach All-Stars on Saturday, Oct. 13 and
the Final Grand Jam on Sunday, Oct. 14.
Each show features many musicians in
town for the weekend jamming together
and having some fun.
Santangini said he’s particularly excited
to see Brian Culbertson play Oct.
12 at Cape High. Culbertson is a contemporary
jazz instrumentalist who
plays keyboard and trombone. He is also
a composer and arranger and is
heavily influenced by funk.
“He’s an upcoming star,” said Santangini.
“He’s very talented and getting
better by the day.” Culbertson will play
with Eric Darius with special guests
Matt Marshak and Marcus Anderson.
Tickets are nearly sold out.
BONEY JAMES • Thursday, Oct. 11, 8 p.m., Cape Henlopen High School, Lewes
Boney James
makes ‘Contact’
Boney James fans have scooped
up more three million copies
of his 12 albums, and eight of
the albums went to No. 1 on
the Billboard Contemporary Jazz
Chart. He is considered one of the
most influential jazz artists of his generation.
In 2010, Billboard Magazine
named him “The No. 3 Top Contemporary
Jazz Artist of the Decade.”
With four gold albums, three Grammy
nominations, a Soul Train Award
and an NAACP Award nomination to
his credit, James said: “I am just a saxophone
player whose music has several
different influences. Jazz is only one of
them.”
His latest CD, “Contact,” is driven by
the signature soulful grooves the world
has come to expect from him, but with
an added intensity.
“Contact” boasts high-profile vocal
guest appearances from Grammy and
Tony Award winner Heather Headley;
platinum-selling singer and former
member of Destiny’s Child, LeToya
Luckett; and R&B superstars Mario
and Donnell Jones.
“The title, ‘Contact’, initially reminded
me of an electrical contact,” says
James. “But once I started getting deeper
into the record and writing the lyrics
for the vocal songs, it seemed to me to
also be about love, the connection between
people and the frequent regret
people experience as a result of missed
opportunities. ‘Why did I not do this or
that?’ People ask themselves that all the
time. The word has so many layers.”
“Contact” also speaks to his personal
life. Last spring, while in traffic on a
Los Angeles highway, Boney’s car was
totaled when he was rear-ended by a
drunk driver. “One moment, I was on
my way home thinking about what I
was going to have for dinner and the
next moment I was in an ambulance
with a fractured jaw and two missing
front teeth, thinking I may never play
my sax again. Looking at the car, I
knew I could have been killed. Months
later, after healing, I was so grateful to
be back on stage and back to work on
The Greatest Jazz Fesival in the
Jazz Festival’s organizers
do not take lightly. The
festival lives up to the name by offering
a stellar lineup of shows in downtown
Rehoboth and is now expanding to
venues along the Route 1 corridor and
into Lewes.
The new theater on the campus of
the Cape Henlopen High School was
built to Broadway standards and is considered
to be the second best theater in
the state. Its integrated sound system
and lights are state of the art. In addition
to this new technology, the theater
was built to provide the greatest seating
and sightline comfort for the attendees,
The natural expansion to Cape Theater
generated new interest on the part
of Route One businesses to be included
in the growth of the jazz festival. This
growth includes the various Route One
lodgings that offer aggressive and favorable
room rates to regional festival
attendees.
For the first time, this expansion has
given the festival the freedom and comfort
to include the Village Green at the
Villages of Five Points for its open-air
Because of last year’s initial success,
Epworth United Methodist Church will
with the aggressive desire to have five
overwhelming response to the festival
growth by the “Route One/Lewes Corridor”
has put plans into motion to
make the 2013 festival even bigger and
better.
The festival invites the entire beach
PRODUCER OF THE YEAR
Michael Lazaroff
helps bring jazz ashore
By Melissa Steele
melissasteele@capegazette.com
On land or at sea, Michael Lazaroff is
no stranger to jazz.
As executive director of Jazz Cruises
LLC, Lazaroff has sponsored the Rehoboth
Beach Jazz Festival for the past
two years.
This year he’s been named producer
of the year for the 23rd annual Rehoboth
Beach event.
“Michael Lazaroff is one of the few
leading promoters of live music events
in the United States that reaches all demographic
groups. He brings to audiences
the leading music performers,
and at the same time provides them
with great enjoyment because of his
‘greatest party at sea,’” said Dennis Santangini,
president of the festival. “We
are one of the very few jazz festivals
that had been honored by his association,
and it’s our pleasure to honor him
as our Producer of the Year 2012.”
A St. Louis native, Lazaroff was an attorney
until his mother Anita E. Berry –
who had booked jazz cruises for years –
decided in 2001 that they should charter
a ship to organize their own jazz
cruise, according to Splash Magazine
online.
The cruises feature top jazz musicians,
and ships stop in popular island
destinations such as Turks and Caicos,
St. Barth’s and St. Maarten’s.
“Some of my closest friends I’ve met
on the cruises I have chartered. They
came on board as clients, but lasting
friendships have developed. My approach
to the industry is to invite people
to come on one of my cruises to
have fun, not simply as a customer,”
Lazaroff said in a Splash Magazine interview.
Timothy’s to host five
jazz fest concerts
By Ryan Mavity
ryanm@capegazette.com
For Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival connoisseurs, a new
venue has stepped up to make sure the party doesn’t
end. Timothy’s At The Beach on Route 1 outside Rehoboth
will host five concerts as part of the festival.
Denny Santangini, president of the festival, said, “They
reached out to us and wanted to be a part of it.”
He said there were not a lot of venues in Rehoboth like
Timothy’s where acts could play. Santangini said the shows
at Timothy’s, which come with a lower price tag, would provide
more people with opportunities to see the jazz festival.
Timothy’s owner Kirk Steele said the jazz fest was a good
opportunity for the restaurant to get involved with the community.
The festival is something Rehoboth should embrace
as a way to bring in business in the offseason, he said. Timothy’s
is nearing its third year in business and hosts acoustic
performers and bands every Tuesday and Saturday.
“It’s an exciting thing,” Steele said.
On Friday, Oct. 12, Timothy’s will host two shows: a 5:30
PHOTO COURTESY OF THE REHOBOTH FOODIE
p.m. happy hour concert by Zoe and an after show at 11:30
p.m. with Brian Simpson and Marc Antoine. Tickets for the
happy hour show are $15, while the after-hours show is $28
for the main stage room and $22 for the simulcast room.
Steele said in total, the venue can hold 200 people.
The following night, Saturday, Oct. 13, the restaurant will
host two more shows at the same times; the happy hour
show is by Urban Jazz Coalition and the after-party show is
by Jeff Golub and Steve Cole. Tickets for the happy hour
show are $15, while the after-hours show is $25 for the main
stage room and $22 for the simulcast room.
Timothy’s will host the jazz fest’s closing party, 6:30 p.m.,
Sunday, Oct. 14, with a performance by Urban Jazz Coalition
with guests Matt Marshak, Marcus Anderson, Jeff Kashiwa
and others to be announced. Tickets are $20.
return to Rehoboth
Concert to feature Darius, Marshak, Anderson
Brian Culbertson began his
quest in music on piano at the
age of 8, adding drums at 9,
trombone at 10 then bass at 12.
He grew up in Decatur, IL, loving
genre-crossing jazz-pop artists such as
Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Tower
of Power, the Brecker Brothers, David
Sanborn, Yellowjackets and Maynard
Ferguson. So naturally gifted was Brian,
his 7th grade piano recital consisted of
all original tunes.
In 1994, at age 20, Brian self-pro-
duced his debut, Long Night Out, followed
in short order by Modern Life
and After Hours (1996). With 1997’s Secrets,
the hits kept comin’ with “So
Good” and “On My Mind.” His 1999
follow-up, Somethin’ Bout Love, also
sat high among the Contemparary Jazz
Top 20 for nearly a year with the two
No. 1 singles, “Back In The Day” and
“Do You Really Love Me?” In 2001, Brian
released Nice & Slow (featuring
special guest trumpeter Herb Alpert
and singer/songwriter Kenny Latti-
more), which spent six weeks at No. 1
on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz
Chart thanks to the No. 1 singles “Get It
On” and “All About You.” Then came
Come On Up (2003), highlighted by a
blazing cover of Earth Wind & Fire’s
“Serpentine Fire” and the beautiful
“Our Love.” 2005’s It’s On Tonight
found him making the switch from
Warner Bros. to GRP/Verve for a sensual-leaning
project featuring the leadoff
single “Hooking Up” plus “Let’s Get
Started,” as well as special guests Patti
Austin, Will Downing, Chris Botti, Kirk
Whalum, Ledisi and Boney James. A
Soulful Christmas, the 2006 holiday album,
swiftly followed. 2008 found him
blasting back with the all-star blowout
Bringing Back the Funk, a salute to ‘70s
soul music that he co-produced with
the legendary Maurice White. In total,
Brian has produced or performed on
over 25 No. 1 records. In 2010, he released
his eleventh studio album XII.
ARTIST OF THE YEAR JEFF GOLUB • Friday, Oct. 12, 10 p.m., Epworth United Methodist Church, Rehoboth
Jeff Golub
gets the blues
Former Rod Stewart guitarist to be joined
on local stage by blues great Henry Butler
By Kara Nuzback
knuzback@capegazette.com
Jazz guitarist Jeff Golub is a regular
at the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival,
and major personal setbacks will not
stop him from appearing at this year’s
event.
Golub, 57, started his career in music
as a guitarist for Billy Squier, but he is
best known as a guitarist for Rod Stewart,
whom he played with for seven
years. He has also released a dozen
solo albums since 1988, including his
most recent album in 2011, The Three
Kings. While recording his lates album.
Golub suffered from a collapse of the
optic nerves in both eyes. “I’ve lost
my sight,” he said in a phone interview,
Sept. 20.
The loss has taken some getting used
to. On Sept. 5, Golub fell onto the
tracks of a New York City subway. “I
thought I was stepping into a car,” he
said.
While trying to climb back onto the
platform, Golub was grazed by a train
car and briefly dragged.
“I pulled myself off the tracks, and
good samaritans helped to stop the
train,” Golub said. He was then treated
at a nearby hospital.
The guitarist said he was surprised
to have suffered only bruises and cuts
from the accident. “It’s surprising,” he
said. “I’m in pretty good shape.”
Golub said an emergency medical
technician told him he must have some
unfinished business to tend to.
Since losing his vision, Golub has un-
Eric Darius: ‘Music can make a difference’
“I want my music to be a vehicle for
change and to transcend boundaries
from age to race.
“I believe my music can make a difference
in the world,” says Eric Darius,
the commanding 20-something musician,
composer, and performer, known
for his dynamic and exhilarating live
shows.
Darius’ explosive arrival on the contemporary
jazz scene at age 17 caused a
frenzy. The ambitious saxophonist who
has shared the stage with everyone
from Prince, Carlos Santana, Wynton
Marsalis, Wyclef Jean, George Benson,
and Brian McKnight, had just released
an auspicious recording debut and had
already made an appearance at the
famed Montreux Jazz Festival in
Switzerland.
Darius released his latest album and
Shanachie Entertainment debut, On A
Mission, in the summer of 2010.
Matt Marshak taps into diversity
Contemporary jazz guitarist Matt
Marshak taps into the wonderful diversity
of music in Colors of Me (Nuance
Music Group), shading his classic and
fluid style with jazz, blues, rock, pop
and even down-home boogie. Marshak’s
seventh major release follows
2011’s highly received Urban Folktales,
which captured a sophisticated latenight
vibe and boasted a No. 1 song on
the indie jazz chart, “Silent Knowing.”
Marcus Anderson brings energy
After his breakthrough in contemporary
jazz circles as the 2009 winner of
the Capital Jazz Fest Challenge, Marcus
Anderson is embracing every opportunity
to perform and inspire fans. The
talented composer, saxophonist and
flutist’s original working title was Transition,
a nod to the development of his
career and his move toward the top of
contemporary jazz. With the release of
his third solo CD, Anderson’s goal is to
capture the energy from his shows and
make this collection of music his most
dynamic, joyful and creative recordings
yet.
An account has been set up so fans
can help with Golub’s medical expenses.
“The doctors I want to see aren’t
Golub said the loss of his sight has
not had a negative effect on his guitar
difficult. “Any contributions help me
there,” he said.
Butler: Piano in New Orleans tradition
Once you’ve heard what bluesman
Henry Butler’s hands can create on the
ivories, there’s no going back. Throw in
a classically trained voice aching us
through the blues, and you’re someplace
you have never been before.
The premier exponent of the great
New Orleans jazz and blues piano tradition,
classical, pop, blues, and R&B, his music
is as excitingly eclectic as that of his
New Orleans birthplace.
Blinded by glaucoma at birth, Butler
has been playing the piano since he
was 6, and arranging, composing, and
performing professionally since he was
12. A New York Times review of a performance
at New York City’s Jazz Standard
described Butler as “percussive in
his attack, ostentatious with his technique…the
picture of stubborn mischief
- and, not coincidentally, of New Orleans
pianism. He obliged the spirit of
the occasion with his own stylistic consommé:
billowing whole-tone glissandi;
furrowed, Monkish hiccups; boppish
two-handed octaves; flare-ups of funk
and Chopin.” To date, Butler has played
almost every major club and festival in
the United States, as well as venues in
Brazil, France, Norway, Italy, Japan,
Australia, and more. For over 40 years,
he has conducted workshops, clinics,
and master classes throughout the
country; he also developed a camp for
blind and visually impaired teen musicians,
Simpson, Antoine
get set to inspire
Celebrated keyboardist, composer
and studio musician,
Brian Simpson has been the
go-to man for everyone from
Janet Jackson and Teena Marie to
George Duke, Stanley Clarke and Dave
Koz, for whom he has had the distinction
of being musical director for the
past 15 years. The chart-topping musical
chameleon who wrote the No. 1
R&B hit “The First Time” for Surface
in the 1990s confesses, “Ultimately, my
listeners inspire me to make my music.”
Known for his ability to sculpt time-
less love songs, soulful party anthems
and melodies that stay on your mind,
Brian Simpson is a master at his craft.
South Beach, his inaugural album for
Shanachie Entertainment, delivers on
every front. The album’s title track,
with a jubilant vibe reminiscent of the
Ramsey Lewis smash hit “The In
Crowd,” is already top 20 on multiple
jazz charts, two months prior to album
release.
“I’m very happy we chose South
Beach as the first single,” confides
Simpson, “because it’s probably the
song that’s most indicative of my style.
My travels take me to some pretty nice
places, but my favorites are always the
ones with beaches. In the last year I’ve
been to Hawaii, Bali, Indonesia, and
several beaches in Florida. The wind,
sea, and sand really inspired the
melodies you’ll hear.” Now he’s coming
to Rehoboth Beach.
Hailing from Gurnee, Illinois, Brian
always knew music would play center
stage in his life. “Our house was filled
with music. My older brother and sister
both played instruments, and my
brother’s rock band rehearsed in our
living room every weekend. I never really
considered any other lifestyle,” said
the keyboardist.
After graduating from Northern Illinois
University, Simpson relocated to
Los Angeles where he quickly immersed
himself in the local jazz scene.
Late-night jazz sessions found him
playing alongside everyone from saxophonists
Everette Harp and Boney
James to guitarist Norman Brown.
Placing his success in pop aside, Brian
Simpson has always been a working
jazz musician. He has toured with
some of the greats of recent jazz history,
including George Duke, Stanley
Clarke, Larry Carlton, Kirk Whalum
and Jonathan Butler.
Marc Antoine gets jazzy
Guitarist, composer and producer
Marc Antoine was born in Paris
(France) in 1963. His parents bought
him his first guitar when he was 11
years old which quickly became his
third arm. Marc has had a guitar in his
hands ever since.
At age 13, his father saw such rapid
progress that he sent him to the conservatory
where he would study classical
music. By then his mentors were
Andres Segovia and John Williams.
At 17 he’d already won many prizes
and started showing an interest in a va-
riety of music genres including jazz,
rock, world , pop and more. At the
same time he was playing in local
bands in Britany.
Tragedy struck in the summer of 1981
when his debut career got cut short by
a devastating injury to his left hand.
The surgeon told him that his chances
of playing again were very small. However,
through the adversity, his love and
passion for music helped him overcome
this tragedy and in 1984 he was
back on the scene in Paris, performing
in clubs and recording for artists like
Charlelie Couture, France Gall, Jill Kaplan,
Ray Lema and more.
Marc’s career boasts many No. 1 hits
on the R&R contemporary jazz charts,
as well as topping the Billboard charts.
In 1995, R&R elected him best new
artist of the year, which was followed
by his Gavin Award in 1998, a Latin
Grammy for best instrumental song in
2005 and the International Artist of the
Year at the Chicago Jazz Awards in
2010. He has also received numerous
nominations for jazz awards in the U.S.
and Canada.
Rehoboth Beach JAZZ FESTIVAL - October 2012 Page 39
FRALINGER STRING BAND • SATURDAY, Oct. 13, noon, The Villages of Five Points, Lewes
Free concert brings
Mummery to fest
By Henry J. Evans Jr.
hevans@capegazette.com
This year’s Rehoboth Beach
Jazz Festival will feature a
band whose sound is a big
departure from music commonly
called jazz.
The Fralinger String Band is bringing
its Mummers musical styles spanning
sing-along favorites, Dixieland, jazz, big
band, swing, patriotic, contemporary
and Latin to The Village Green at the
Villages of Five Points. The show starts
at noon, Saturday, Oct. 14.
“They’re headlining the free, family
concert,” said Denny Santangini, Rehoboth
Beach Jazz Festival president.
Philadelphia Mummers are costumed
entertainers who welcome in
the New Year by festively parading
down center city streets.
Mummery dates back to early Egypt
when they led the burial procession of
pharaohs, dressed in extravagant costumes,
playing finger cymbals, tambourines
and other rhythm instruments.
The Fralinger band is called the ultimate
in Mummers’ entertainment.
They won first, second or third prize in
20 of the last 25 New Years’ Day parades
in which they have performed.
Dr. John J. Fralinger, a Philadelphia
physician and pharmacist, organized
the group in 1914.
Known as a progressive string band,
Fralinger claims a number of Mummers
firsts – vocalization, emulation of
brass instrument sounds using reed instruments,
performance of Dixieland
jazz and big band music, and recipient
of Philadelphia Mayor’s Achievement
Award.
The band performed at this year’s
Mardi Gras in New Orleans, at the
Hong Kong International Chinese New
Year Parade in 2007, and appeared in
the 1981 movie ‘Blow Out,’ written and
directed by Brian De Palma.
JONATHAN BUTLER • Saturday, Oct. 13, 1 p.m., Cape Henlopen High School, Lewes
Jonathan Butler’s
Soul of Summer
Smooth jazz artist to be
joined by Hill, Maysa
Alife well lived is often the
best foundation for compelling
art, and there’s no
denying Jonathan Butler has
been blessed with a fascinating life. A
South African native whose expansive
musical gift has earned accolades in
the R&B, contemporary jazz and
gospel fields, Butler’s new release
Grace and Mercy is filled with the
soulful sounds and insightful lyrics fans
have come to expect from the veteran
performer.
On Grace and Mercy, Butler delivers
a collection of songs that serve as a
soothing musical balm in today’s troubled
times. “This album really speaks
about optimism, faith, belief and hope,
especially in light of what everybody
has been experiencing in the last two
or three years,” he says. “There’s been a
lot of people losing their homes, their
jobs; enduring the challenges that life
brings. I’m hoping this album will bring
hope to people. Songs like ‘Give it Up
To God,’ ‘I Stand On Your Word,’ and
‘Who is Like the Lord’ were written
from experiences that I’ve had to go
through myself.”
Born in Cape Town, Butler was the
youngest of 12 children. He discovered
a gift for music early in life and began
singing and playing guitar at age seven.
As a child, he traveled all over South
Africa performing with a troupe of 100
children, getting a first-hand look at the
country’s disturbing dichotomy: Devastating
poverty and extreme affluence
that existed under apartheid.
Butler signed his first record deal as
a teen and became the first black artist
playing on white South African stations.
“That was 1974 and it was a song
titled ‘Please Stay,’” Butler recalls of the
historic tune, which won a Sarie
Award, the South African equivalent of
a Grammy.
Butler has toured the world with
such acclaimed artists as Kirk Whalum,
Dave Koz and Ruby Turner. He’s
ART SHERROD JR. • Saturday, Oct. 13, 2:30 p.m., Epworth United Methodist Church, Rehoboth Beach
Sherrod: When jazz
meets Motown
Smooth and urban jazz saxophonist
Art Sherrod Jr. grew up
in Palestine, Texas surrounded
by parents who made music a
main part of the Sherrod household. At
the age of five he was singing in the
choir and at the age of thirteen Art
joined the high school band and had to
make a big decision, what instrument
should he play? Art finally settled on
the instrument that he thought might
get the most attention from the girls
and chose the saxophone.
Aside from being in the Drum and
Bugle Corps in the Naval Academy,
Art’s later musical schooling came
from real-life experiences on the bandstand
and picking up ideas from his favorite
artistic influences like Cannonball
Adderley, Charlie Parker, Gerald
Albright (bass), Kirk Whalum, Kim
Waters, David Sanborn and others.
Art’s profound experiences as a child,
listening to his mother play organ and
sing in a joyous manner, convinced him
at an early age that music had the power
to lift your spirits.
He released a live CD and DVD project
titled Art Sherrod Jr. Live in 2004
that was quickly followed by his debut
CD All 4 Love in 2005. All 4 Love put
Sherrod in the spotlight, receiving posi-
tive attention and receiving comments
like, “after one listen you will instantly
become an Art lover.” Laced with Urban
Jazz, R&B, and the traditional
Smooth Jazz sounds, “Seasons,” manages
to bring together a “who’s who”
list of great musicians Sherrod has performed
with during the years including
(his mentor), Gerald Albright, Will
Downing, Tracy Hamlin and Marcus
Johnson.
Sherrod demonstrates in his new release
that he really knows how to shape
a myriad of moods, from his sultry
“Thinking Of You,” to the funky
“Smooth Grove” and covering a silky
rendition of Earth, Wind and Fire’s,
“That’s the Way of the World.” Each
track is an expression of Art’s heartfelt
voice on soprano, alto and tenor saxophones
as he creates rambunctious
riffs, soulful sounds, and gorgeous
grooves.
Besides alto, tenor and soprano saxophone,
Art plays electronic wind controller
(EWI).

SAX PACK • Saturday, Oct. 13, 4 p.m., Rehoboth Beach Convention Center
Tap into raw energy
of The Sax Pack
Sax Pack trio brings an energized
new version of jazz to the
stage. The idea of The Sax Pack
originated in 2004 with saxophonist
Jeff Kashiwa after he saw a
movie about the Rat Pack, a group of
legendary entertainers led by Frank
Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy
Davis, Jr.
Inspired by their showmanship and
camaraderie, Kashiwa came up with
the name The Sax Pack and called on
some of his saxophone peers and start-
ed a new group that would feature the
instrument, as well as their collective
musical passion for jazz, funk and R&B.
The Sax Pack has released two CDs,
The Sax Pack (2008) and The Pack is
Back (2009) on Shanachie Records.
In 2012, The Sax Pack features Jeff
Kashiwa, Steve Cole and Marcus Anderson.
Along with being musically cohesive,
the trio share a unique and comical camaraderie
on stage.
Backed by a tight rhythm section, the
talented trio combine their life-long
love of music and their passion for performance
to make an impact on audiences
that love music as much as they
do.
Committed to sharing the excitement,
spontaneity and creative energy
that flows between them on stage, The
Sax Pack inspires an audience far beyond
the duration of a show.
The well-known saxophonists are
excited to create a show that combines
their individual styles and diverse
backgrounds for a fresh approach to
the music that inspired them all to become
musicians: Jazz.
Highlights of the tour will feature
original music written specifically for
The Sax Pack, as well as each sax player’s
signature hits and the classic funk,
R&B and jazz tunes that will get fans
out of their seats.

OH BOY! A TRIBUTE TO BUDDY HOLLY • Saturday, Oct. 13, 8 p.m., Epworth U.M. Church, Rehoboth
Show is a tribute to
legend Buddy Holly
Buddy Holly’s life story will
come alive in Jazz Festival
performance OH BOY! A
Tribute to Buddy Holly. The
show is at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13,
at Epworth United Methodist Church,
19285 Holland Glade Road in Rehoboth
Beach.
The band is the creation of Rehoboth
Elementary School music
teacher and OH BOY! frontman Walt
Hetfield. The group also features Barry
Eli on bass and keyboards, Mike
Long on rhythm guitar and bass, and
Ken Schleifer on drums. OH BOY!
plays note-for-note versions of the
songs of Buddy Holly and The Crickets.
Hetfield performs in character as
Buddy Holly and narrates the beloved
performer’s amazing life story.
Included in the show will be songs
that are part of the Buddy Holly story.
In addition to The Crickets’ music,
OH BOY! reprises the music of Carl
Perkins, Johnny Cash, Richie Valens
and the Big Bopper.
“We don’t just do the greatest hits,”
said Hetfield, “we also cover the
Rockabilly era of his early career. Being
a fan of Holly myself, it has always
been my intention to do a show that
will satisfy the hard-core fans. We
even do some post-Holly Crickets
numbers.”
The show, which debuted last April
2009 at the Rehoboth Theatre, has
been successful beyond Hetfield’s initial
expectations.
“The original idea was to play a
one-time tribute show in a night club,”
he said “I wanted to commemorate
the 50th anniversary of Buddy’s untimely
demise. Then, a funny thing
happened. The demand for tickets
was so great that we had to move the
show to a theater.
“Since then, we have played to
packed houses for three years in
Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania
and New Jersey. We are looking forward
to appearing at this year’s Rehoboth
Jazz Festival.”
WILL DOWNING & GERALD ALBRIGHT • Saturday, Oct. 13, 10:30 p.m., Rehoboth Convention Center
Downing, Albright
share rich talent
In his two decade recording career,
Brooklyn native and vocalist
Will Downing has carved for
himself a solid career as one of
the leading purveyors of unapologetic,
unabashed romantic music. And while
this has not translated to crossover
success – it has gained for Downing a
solid musical legacy and a rabidly loyal
following among women.
successful albums and had a minor hit
with a cover of “A Love Supreme” before
releasing his breakout 1991 album
A Dream Fulfilled. It was a marvelous
disc that showed Downing not only
possessed a fine baritone voice but that
he was also an excellent song stylist,
deftly handling such diverse pieces as
War’s “The World Is A Ghetto” and
Paul Davis’ “I Go Crazy” and providing
a stunning, definitive version of Angela
and the album hit the Urban top 25, to
great critical acclaim.
Van Williamson Trio
continues to keep the beat
The Van Williamson Trio returns
to the 23rd Annual Rehoboth
Beach Jazz Festival
this year with a couple of
new locations, some new tunes, and
the same old joie de vivre that makes
them a popular attraction at local watering
holes. As usual, the trio will feature
Van on guitar, the redoubtable
Tom Anthony on upright and electric
bass, and the multi-faceted Felix Contreras
on drums and percussion.
The trio, or members thereof, has
been appearing at the festival since the
event’s second year, which means
they’re all starting to get a little long in
the tooth.
The oldest member is closing in on
30, so do the math: They started playing
the festival when they were 5- to 10years
old.
“We only knew children’s songs, because
we were children. We had a
snappy polyrhythmic version of Three
Blind Mice, which was weird, because
we didn’t know what ‘snappy’ or
‘polyrhythmic’ meant, although we
were hip to mice. Worked out ok, although
it was difficult to go back to elementary
school after all the excitement
of the weekend,” according to
Williamson.
“So we just kept coming down to the
best party around. Eventually we were
old enough to drink, and that’s when
things really got interesting. As usual,
we thank the organizers for celebrating
America’s music, and providing at outlet
for the many underworked and underpaid
musicians in the Delmarva region
and beyond. You gotta love it.”
Van, Tom and Felix hope music
lovers will stop by and enjoy some classic
American jazz and pop tunes and
make sure they’re still vertical after all
these years. (The boys, not the tunes.)
from San Francisco State University
and spent many years playing in the
to his radio career, he has played
as a solo guitarist, and in groups ranging
from folk to classical, both on the
West Coast and in the Delmarva region.
For 20 years, he was the producer
of Radio from Downtown, a live music/variety
radio broadcast at the Avalon
Theatre in Easton, MD. The show
is currently on hiatus.
Van just retired from a long stint as
where he also produced numerous music
pieces over the years, featuring,
among others, Rosanne Cash, Steely
many others. He was at the show for
the changing of the guard, directing the
last show of Bob Edwards and the first
show of Steve Inskeep and Renee Montagne.
He’s now devoting full time to
his other pursuits, music the foremost.
set the stage for Warren’s entire musical
future: Playing the music that he
Since 1991, Warren has released 11 solo
lumped with his friend Luther Vandross,
Downing was actually creating
his own brand of love music that was
less urban and much jazzier. And
though Downing’s songs were also
more sensual than Vandross’, he shared
Luther’s sensibilities, singing to women
on a truly romantic level that clearly
went beyond the physical.
Looking back over the last two
decades, Will Downing has established
himself as one of the most consistent,
soulful singers of his era and arguably,
with the unfortunate death of Luther
Vandross, as today’s leading provider of
romantic, soulful music.
Albright’s star continues to soar
Gerald Albright grew up in South
Central Los Angeles. After high school,
he attended the University of Redlands
where he received a B.S. in business
management, minoring in music.
Immediately after college, Albright
began to master his talent by working
extensively in the studio with such
artists as Patrice Rushen, Anita Baker,
Ray Parker, Jr., Lola Folana, Atlantic
Starr, The Winans, Olivia Newton-John,
The Temptations, and Maurice White.
He also toured with Les McCann, Rodney
Franklin, Jeff Lorber, Teena Marie,
Marlene Shaw, Debra and Eloise Laws,
Quincy Jones, Whitney Houston, Phil
Collins, and many others. In addition to
numerous appearances at clubs and
jazz festivals, Albright had also been a
part of the popular Jazz Explosion
tours, which saw him teaming up with
contemporary jazz stars like Downing,
Jonathan Butler, Hugh Masekela, Chaka
Khan, and Rachelle Ferrell.
Albright had sold over 1 million albums
in the U.S. His self-produced music
features him on bass guitar, keyboards,
flutes, drum programming, and
background vocals.
With 15 CDs under his belt and one
collaboration CD, Albright has certainly
defined his place in the music world
as a player, songwriter and producer.

11th year Contreras has played the Rehoboth
Jazz Festival with the Van
Williamson Trio.
Tom Anthony
Tom Anthony started playing guitar
and mandolin at the age of eight. By
the time he was 12, he was playing with
Elmer Stonesipher and the Sunvalley
boys. He continued playing country
music ‘til he was 18, when he switched
to bass to play with the Summerset
Seven, traveling to Europe on the Holland
American Line. The band played
onboard (“Sea Cruise” wasn’t out yet),
and then on the continent in France,
Germany and Holland. Tom went on
to play the Stork Club in New York
City with a Latin band and performed
society music in central New Jersey.
That led to jazz gigs in New York and
New Jersey.
In 1988, he moved to Chestertown,
Maryland, where he continues to play
at various venues around the Delmarva
Peninsula. Tom also works with local
symphonies and theater companies,
and has traveled to Ireland for many
years to play at the Clifdon Arts Festival.
He’s part of the house band at the
Mainstay in Rock Hall, MD, with
Chuck and Robert Redd, Steve Abshire,
Sue Mathews and others. He
joined Van at the jazz festival in the
early 90s to perform as a duo, which
expanded into the Van Williamson
Trio with Felix in 2001.
The Van Williamson Trio will perform
from 7-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 at
Dos Locos Restaurant (208 Rehoboth
Ave.); from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 at
Rose Garden clothing store (240 Rehoboth
Ave.); from 8-11 p.m. Saturday,
Oct. 13 at Iguana Grill Restaurant and
Cantina (52 Baltimore Ave.); and from 11
a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Back
Porch Café (59 Rehoboth Ave.).

The Richard Walton Group is
celebrating its 21st anniversary
as an accomplished,
award-winning, instrumental
one of the first original jazz groups to
the national smooth jazz radio market
HDCD, Junction, is a critically acclaimed
studio release that has blessed
the group with new audiences, supplemented
with an array of high profile
performances. Their live enhanced CD
a nearly sold-out performance at the
world-famous jazz club.
Formed in 1991, after being chosen as
a semi-finalist in a Mid-Atlantic sponsorship,
“We are so fortunate to have Pam and her band again this
challenging to accommodate the demand for shows that
In an industry where labels dominate, Pam refuses to be
defined by any one style of music. Instead, she draws from
many different genres to create a unique sound all her own.
Pam sings straight from the heart, with a warmly personal
style that draws listeners in. Not content merely to sing the
song well, she experiments with the mood, rhythm and
melody so that each performance is fresh and unique. Her
stellar band consists of guitar, bass, drums, and horns and
delivers a variety of fare, from straight jazz to cool blues and
soulful sambas (some sung in Portuguese), and even classic
pop with a creative jazz twist. "A lot of people have heard
these songs over and over, but have forgotten what they
mean. I want them to listen with a new ear.”
“Pam Miller's interpretation of jazz standards is unique”
says Sydney Arzt, proprietor of the former Sydney's and
now board member of Delaware Charitable Music, Inc. "She
has a beautiful, classically trained voice, and she does a lot of
arrangements that are well suited to her voice."
has recently been licensed by
Capitol/EMI Records as part of a
Gospel/Jazz compilation project.
When asked why this group is generating
so much excitement in smooth jazz
circles, Carol Archer of Radio & Records
was quoted, “A lot of artists aspire to a
sound as tight and as funky as Urban Jazz
Coalition, but these gentlemen can really
pull it off…and how!
With the success of the band’s latest
studio project, “A New Day,” and the positive
buzz generated by their energetic
performances on the national smooth
jazz festival circuit, Urban Jazz Coalition
definitely has the momentum to hit the
road during the summer of 2009.
You won’t want to miss an opportunity
alism and primitive elongation. He has
established himself as one of the premier
painters of African American Art.
He has a creative approach to artistic
images of the common man, woman
and child. His images are inspired by
African Americans in and out of daily
life, popular entertainment and the
world of sports. He has exhibited his
works throughout the United States at
art festivals, galleries, trade shows, convention
centers and sports arenas
where he has received numerous
awards.
His work has been exhibited at the
African American Museum in Philadelphia,
and also in one-man shows at
Howard University, Widener University,
West Chester University, University
of Pennsylvania, Penn State and the
Butler Institute of Fine Art in
Youngstown, Ohio. One of his baseball
images has been incorporated into
the Baseball Hall of Fame Museum in
Cooperstown, N.Y., and he has created
a mural for Turner Stadium in Atlanta.
Recently, he was one of 20 artists selected
to paint a six-foot statue of the
Phillie Phanatic. His “Music Phanatic”
was at the Kimmel Performing Arts
throughout the 2010 baseball season.
Collectors of Tilghman’s artwork include
notables such as Dave Winfield,
Nelson Mandela, Bill Cosby, the estate
of Ossie Davis, Nabisco Corporation,
Prudential, MBNA and Astra-Zeneca.
In 2004 his alma mater, Kutztown
University, commissioned him for a
commemorative poster for the 50th
Anniversary of Brown versus the
Board of Education.
Dane’s creative philosophy is to
bring to the audience his interpretive
views of life on canvas. This is reflected
in his diverse presentations as he
shares his artistic gift with his audience.
His unique style clearly defines
his mastery of the craft.
