Chapter 7 GLP-1 prevents glucocorticoid-related metabolic effects
Taken together, this study provides evidence that the GLP-1 RA exenatide may prevent
prednisolone-induced glucose intolerance and restore islet-cell functional balance. Longterm
studies in relevant populations should explore the potential of GLP-1 RA treatment as a
novel strategy to prevent steroid diabetes.
Acknowledgments and Funding: The authors express their gratitude to Mark Fineman
(Amylin Pharmaceuticals) for the determination of exenatide plasma levels. Drs. Daniël
van Raalte and Drs. Margot Linssen are supported by the Dutch Top Institute Pharma (TIP)
grant T1-106. Drs. Renate van Genugten is supported by the EFSD/MSD Clinical Research
Programme 2008. Dr. D. Margriet Ouwens is supported by the Ministry of Innovation, Science,
Research and Technology of the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia, and the EU European
Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST) Action BM0602.
