The open and scalable TwinCAT automation plat<strong>for</strong>m is a dynamic<br />
software PLC and Motion <strong>Control</strong> solution <strong>for</strong> <strong>PC</strong>s. This openness of<br />
the software and hardware interfaces enables machine manufacturers<br />
to continually adapt their systems to different requirements at a low<br />
cost. <strong>Beckhoff</strong> offers turnkey technology blocks <strong>for</strong> PLC and operation/<br />
monitoring <strong>for</strong> the most important processes such as injection molding,<br />
blow molding and extrusion. Rapid market access is thus made<br />
possible with tried-and-tested technologies. However, the machine<br />

EtherCAT – the rising standard <strong>for</strong> the plastics industry<br />

development of <strong>PC</strong>-<strong>based</strong> control technology with EtherCAT. EtherCAT<br />
is now established worldwide as an accepted and heavily utilised<br />
fi eldbus. In the meantime, a large number of plastics machine manufacturers<br />
have chosen EtherCAT as the backbone of their controllers.<br />
However, other relevant fi eldbus systems such as the Euromap protocol<br />
or PROFIBUS architectures are optimally integrated with EtherCAT.<br />
A fast, commonly used fi eldbus is one of the most important factors to<br />
achieve success with energy-saving servo-electric concepts in particular.<br />
EtherCAT offers optimum real-time properties <strong>for</strong> critical process<br />
phases without requiring special hardware in the central controller.<br />
With the eXtreme Fast <strong>Control</strong> Technology (XFC), temporal resolution<br />
of < 100 ns is possible using the time stamp method and sensor signals<br />
can be read with sampling times of less than 10 µs. This increases<br />
the repeatability and accuracy of the processes and, as a result, the<br />
effi ciency of the machines.<br />
Maximum per<strong>for</strong>mance up to the I/Os<br />
<strong>Beckhoff</strong> supplies a complete range of fi eldbus components <strong>for</strong> all<br />
common I/O and fi eldbus systems. With the IP 20 Bus Terminals and<br />
the IP 67 Fieldbus Box modules, the entire range is available <strong>for</strong> all<br />
signals relevant to the plastics industry. Other fi eldbuses can also be<br />
integrated via <strong>Beckhoff</strong> Bus Terminals or Fieldbus Box modules.<br />
Motion <strong>Control</strong><br />
<strong>PC</strong>-<strong>based</strong> control technology in combination with EtherCAT is an ideal<br />
control component <strong>for</strong> the replacement of hydraulic axes by electrically<br />
driven axes, particularly with injection molding and blow molding<br />
machines. Drive technology from <strong>Beckhoff</strong> offers high per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />
with optimum precision, even <strong>for</strong> the smallest parts.<br />
Turnkey Motion <strong>Control</strong> modules <strong>for</strong> servo-electric, hydraulic or<br />
hybrid machine concepts are supplied within the PLC Framework <strong>for</strong><br />

Servo-electric drive technology as a replacement <strong>for</strong><br />
hydraulic axes<br />
The replacement of hydraulically driven axes with servo-electric<br />
drives is necessary <strong>for</strong> achieving higher energy effi ciency in plastics<br />
machines. For this purpose, the AX5000 Servo Drive family from<br />
<strong>Beckhoff</strong> in combination with XFC offers the ideal motion plat<strong>for</strong>m<br />
<strong>for</strong> machines. Quality-determining machine modules can be controlled<br />
with sampling times of less than 50 µs and the inclusion of feedback<br />
is possible. The fl exible design, with 1 and 2-channel units as well as<br />
the variable distribution of motor power, represents a cost-optimised<br />
solution, in particular <strong>for</strong> handling systems. In addition to the industryspecifi<br />
c technology blocks in the controller, <strong>Beckhoff</strong> also offers extensive<br />

EtherCAT Drives<br />
The AX5000 Servo Drive series sets new standards in<br />
Drive Technology. The AX5000 series is available in single-<br />
or multi-channel <strong>for</strong>m and is optimised in terms of function<br />
and cost-effectiveness. The integrated, fast control technology<br />
supports fast and highly dynamic positioning tasks. Fast<br />
switching from injection to holding pressure, which is particularly<br />
important in the injection molding process, is supported<br />

The TwinCAT <strong>Plastic</strong> Application Framework is the plat<strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong><br />
achieving best-in-class, customer-specifi c solutions. Thanks to the<br />
modular structure, application programs <strong>for</strong> various machine types<br />
and methods can be realised. The <strong>Plastic</strong> Application Framework contains<br />
technology modules <strong>for</strong> temperature control and motion control<br />
of plastics machines. Special versions are available <strong>for</strong> injection<br />
molding, blow molding machines and extrusion applications.<br />
The concept was designed so fl exibly that both hydraulic and<br />
electrical axes can be processed in one controller architecture.<br />
Due to the modular structure, the machine manufacturer can combine<br />

XFC represents a<br />
control technology<br />
that enables<br />
very fast and<br />
highly deterministic<br />
responses. It includes all hardware and<br />
software components involved in control<br />
applications: optimised input and output<br />
components which are able to pick up signals<br />
with high accuracy or initiate tasks, EtherCAT<br />
as very fast communication network, highper<strong>for</strong>mance<br />
Industrial <strong>PC</strong>s and TwinCAT, the<br />
automation software that links all system<br />
components.<br />
Compared with current <strong>PC</strong>-<strong>based</strong> controllers,<br />
XFC offers per<strong>for</strong>mance improvements by<br />
a factor of 10 and enables cycle times of<br />
100 µs, without giving up central intelligence<br />
and associated high-per<strong>for</strong>mance algorithms.<br />
With the aid of XFC technology <strong>for</strong> plastic<br />
machines, system reaction times are shortened<br />

High resolution analog inputs often<br />
create process images with interfering<br />
signals. In conventional technology, the input<br />
signal is processed using analog low-pass<br />
filters. With the high sampling rate of oversampling<br />
technology, digital filter algorithms<br />
are possible. Time-critical sensor signals with<br />
high frequency components are processed<br />
with high reproducibility. This allows optimisation<br />
of the sensitivity of the mold safety<br />
algorithm, <strong>for</strong> example.<br />

The reproducibility of the injection process is increased by the<br />
combination of XFC technology with new drive technologies.<br />
Ultra-precise holding pressure regulation improves the quality<br />
of the parts and enables a narrower processing window. The<br />
user is hence able to select a process setting with lower material<br />
reserves, resulting in lower material consumption. Significant<br />
cost savings have been achieved in practical applications.<br />
