Three days before <strong>the</strong> championship fight between Jack Dempsey and<br />

Gene Tunney, and anticip<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong> "a host <strong>of</strong> pickpockets and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r underworld characters" in Philadelphia [see Boxing], a detective<br />

bureau issues "a list <strong>of</strong> Don'ts in warning to <strong>the</strong> visiting fans." Some <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se warnings are published in <strong>the</strong> New York Times on September 21.<br />

While it comes as no surprise th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> bureau advises visitors not to<br />

"make friends with strangers," and not to leave valuables in automobiles<br />

or in hotel rooms, <strong>at</strong> least one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rules raises a question: "Be particularly<br />

careful in elev<strong>at</strong>ors, as <strong>the</strong>se are common places for persons to have<br />

pockets picked." Wouldn't an elev<strong>at</strong>or, which prohibits escape immedi<strong>at</strong>ely<br />

after a <strong>the</strong>ft, <strong>of</strong>fer a difficult str<strong>at</strong>egic situ<strong>at</strong>ion for a pickpocket?<br />

Wh<strong>at</strong> possibilities for becoming invisible, if any, does a thief have in an<br />

elev<strong>at</strong>or? <strong>In</strong> <strong>the</strong> collective imagin<strong>at</strong>ion, elev<strong>at</strong>ors set <strong>the</strong> pace for <strong>the</strong><br />

traffic within modern buildings, whose gigantic dimensions define <strong>the</strong>m<br />

as complex, self-contained worlds. An <strong>of</strong>t-cited paradigm is <strong>the</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e-<strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>-art<br />

hotel. Announcing its reopening after a complete renov<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

Berlin's Hotel Excelsior, "<strong>the</strong> largest hotel on <strong>the</strong> Continent," proudly<br />

fe<strong>at</strong>ures a veritable system <strong>of</strong> elev<strong>at</strong>ors: "Six elev<strong>at</strong>ors regul<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> traffic<br />

to <strong>the</strong> different floors day and night" (8 Uhr-Abendbl<strong>at</strong>t, October 2).<br />

Wh<strong>at</strong> would perhaps provide refuge for a thief fleeing one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se six<br />

elev<strong>at</strong>ors with a stolen purse is <strong>the</strong> anonymity and incessant rhythm <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> hotel space. He could hope to be swallowed up by such complexity.<br />

Not only do <strong>the</strong> elev<strong>at</strong>ors circul<strong>at</strong>e "day and night," but <strong>the</strong> pervasive<br />
