around'-this is your opportunity to learn all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>at</strong>est Valencia, Fox<br />

Trot, Waltz, Tango, and Charleston steps for almost nothing! While<br />

becoming <strong>the</strong> very best dancer in your crowd, you will enjoy learning in<br />

a few priv<strong>at</strong>e lessons and in a class <strong>of</strong> congenial people" (New York<br />

Times, September 22). Among <strong>the</strong> dances mentioned in this advertisement,<br />

<strong>the</strong> tango has a specific st<strong>at</strong>us, for two reasons. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong><br />

Valencia, and unlike <strong>the</strong> Charleston, it connotes, first, <strong>the</strong> "au<strong>the</strong>nticity"<br />

<strong>of</strong> Spanish and L<strong>at</strong>in-American culture, which is <strong>the</strong> only current altern<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

to <strong>the</strong> "au<strong>the</strong>nticity" generally <strong>at</strong>tributed to <strong>the</strong> African and African-American<br />

worlds. [see Bullfighting, Center vs. Periphery] Second,<br />

among <strong>the</strong> dances performed by a couple, <strong>the</strong> tango is <strong>the</strong> only one th<strong>at</strong><br />

does not prescribe complementarity between <strong>the</strong> movements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> man<br />

and woman. Tango dancers look and act as if <strong>the</strong>y did not see each o<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir bodies are supposed to follow <strong>the</strong> rhythm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> music independently<br />

from each o<strong>the</strong>r. Unlike <strong>the</strong> preestablished harmony <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

traditional partner-dances, <strong>the</strong> harmony <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tango couple is staged<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r as emerging out <strong>of</strong> a free collabor<strong>at</strong>ion or as <strong>the</strong>-<strong>of</strong>ten violentresolution<br />

<strong>of</strong> a potential conflict: "Not rounded, but broken, <strong>the</strong> rot<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

produces no center <strong>of</strong> gravity between <strong>the</strong> partners but oscill<strong>at</strong>es from<br />

one to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. If <strong>the</strong>y stay <strong>at</strong> distance <strong>the</strong>y lose each o<strong>the</strong>r, and will<br />

never come toge<strong>the</strong>r" (Elsner and Miiller, 318).<br />

With its prolifer<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> old and new steps, dancing becomes assimil<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

to virtually every o<strong>the</strong>r form <strong>of</strong> entertainment. [see Bars] More<br />

than half <strong>the</strong> advertisements on <strong>the</strong> back page <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Berlin daily<br />

seems inspired by <strong>the</strong> fashion for nonsense poetry, <strong>the</strong> Weidenh<strong>of</strong>, "Berlin's<br />

most spectacular dance palace," emphasizes <strong>the</strong> contrast between<br />

dull everydayness and <strong>the</strong> pleasure <strong>of</strong> moving one's body to <strong>the</strong> rhythm<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> music: "When things become too lousy, come over to <strong>the</strong> Weidenh<strong>of</strong>"<br />

"lighted floor" which makes <strong>the</strong> dancers feel th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y have found some<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r terrain than <strong>the</strong> stable ground <strong>of</strong> everyday reality. [see Uncertainty<br />
