AFTER LEARNING FROM HISTORY 429<br />

for <strong>the</strong> first <strong>time</strong> in <strong>1926</strong>, whe<strong>the</strong>r it was successfully reissued, or<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r, even without a new edition, it simply became a topic <strong>of</strong> widespread<br />

discussion during th<strong>at</strong> year. Once a first repertoire <strong>of</strong> m<strong>at</strong>erials is<br />

thus established, one may include objects th<strong>at</strong> were produced in <strong>1926</strong><br />

but entered <strong>the</strong> public sphere <strong>at</strong> a l<strong>at</strong>er d<strong>at</strong>e. Such inclusions have to rely<br />

on <strong>the</strong> impression th<strong>at</strong> topics and concerns <strong>of</strong> particular public resonance<br />

during th<strong>at</strong> year had an important impact on <strong>the</strong> objects to be analyzed.<br />

A certain amount <strong>of</strong> interpretive arbitrariness is <strong>of</strong> course <strong>the</strong> price th<strong>at</strong><br />

must be paid for working with hypo<strong>the</strong>ses <strong>of</strong> this kind. Among <strong>the</strong> books<br />

th<strong>at</strong> were written (not published) in <strong>1926</strong>, I have <strong>the</strong>refore chosen only<br />

Heidegger's Sein und Zeit-a decision I was encouraged to make by some<br />

recently unear<strong>the</strong>d archival evidence th<strong>at</strong> d<strong>at</strong>es <strong>the</strong> actual writing process<br />

to April through December <strong>of</strong> <strong>1926</strong>. <strong>In</strong> general, however, I resisted <strong>the</strong><br />

tempt<strong>at</strong>ion to use such evidence, because I was interested in exploring<br />

<strong>the</strong> challenges <strong>of</strong> chronological randomness. Sources without a clear<br />

<strong>1926</strong>-inscription were simply considered as not available, even though<br />

in some cases <strong>the</strong>y might have contributed to <strong>the</strong> refinement, illustr<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

and confirm<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> my views.<br />

But even th<strong>at</strong> randomness is rel<strong>at</strong>ive. Being used to enormous chronological<br />

breadth in <strong>the</strong> choice <strong>of</strong> sources for <strong>the</strong>ir narr<strong>at</strong>ives, many historians<br />

overlook <strong>the</strong> fact th<strong>at</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y reject as "chronological randomness"<br />

appears as random only in rel<strong>at</strong>ion to a metaphysical claim<br />

according to which <strong>the</strong> past is structured by an underlying principle <strong>of</strong><br />

causality. And <strong>the</strong>re is yet ano<strong>the</strong>r rule regarding <strong>the</strong> selection and st<strong>at</strong>us<br />

<strong>of</strong> sources: if <strong>the</strong> main criterion for <strong>the</strong> inclusion <strong>of</strong> texts is <strong>the</strong>ir st<strong>at</strong>us<br />

as traces <strong>of</strong> experience available in <strong>the</strong> year <strong>1926</strong>, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> distinction<br />

between fictional and nonfictional texts becomes irrelevant. The only<br />

empirical difference I discovered between <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> nonfictional texts<br />

and th<strong>at</strong> <strong>of</strong> fictional texts lies in <strong>the</strong>-r<strong>at</strong>her unexpected-observ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

th<strong>at</strong>, on average, fictional texts presented a much higher density <strong>of</strong> those<br />

concerns and perspectives which I came to identify as specific to <strong>the</strong> year<br />

<strong>1926</strong>.<br />

4<br />

I do not exactly remember <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> documents I started with, but I do<br />

know th<strong>at</strong>, <strong>at</strong> a very early stage, I abandoned all nonchronological<br />

criteria <strong>of</strong> selection. Any sources, artifacts, or events d<strong>at</strong>ing back to <strong>1926</strong>
