awaken and preorient <strong>the</strong>ir interest. <strong>In</strong> addition, years (not months or<br />

days) are used in standard classific<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> printed m<strong>at</strong>erials (as well as<br />

<strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r artifacts and even <strong>of</strong> "events")-a circumstance th<strong>at</strong> simply<br />

makes things easier for <strong>the</strong> historian <strong>of</strong> simultaneity.<br />

Much more important than <strong>the</strong> <strong>time</strong> span chosen, however, is <strong>the</strong><br />

decision to abstract (as far as possible) from <strong>the</strong> sequentiality and causality<br />

within <strong>the</strong> historiographic reconstruction <strong>of</strong> a chosen year (decade,<br />

month).38 This decision does not bear directly on my primary goal <strong>of</strong><br />

coming as close as possible to actual events and structures <strong>of</strong> experience<br />

which constituted <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year <strong>1926</strong>. R<strong>at</strong>her, <strong>the</strong> suspension <strong>of</strong><br />

sequentiality arises from <strong>the</strong> choice <strong>of</strong> a specific angle <strong>of</strong> historical represent<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

<strong>In</strong> this case, it is <strong>the</strong> focus on a year as an environment, as<br />

a world within which people lived. Although one can <strong>of</strong> course<br />

retrospectively observe transform<strong>at</strong>ions and changes in everyday-worlds<br />

as environments within <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> a year, I think th<strong>at</strong>, as a general<br />

rule, <strong>the</strong>se changes are hardly ever experienced by <strong>the</strong> people who inhabit<br />

those worlds. The self-imposed imper<strong>at</strong>ive to suspend sequentiality<br />

obliges us to minimize recourse to <strong>the</strong> subject-centered concept <strong>of</strong> causality<br />

and to <strong>the</strong> genre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> historical narr<strong>at</strong>ive. Thus, we must ask<br />

wh<strong>at</strong> discourses and concepts we can elabor<strong>at</strong>e in order to establish<br />

noncausal rel<strong>at</strong>ions between <strong>the</strong> texts and artifacts to which we refer. An<br />

answer is all <strong>the</strong> more difficult to find as we have to expose ourselves<br />

to <strong>the</strong> unavoidable sequentiality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text as medium. If we can come<br />

up with any solutions <strong>at</strong> all, <strong>the</strong>y will be contributions to <strong>the</strong> abovementioned<br />

"<strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present," which we need but do not yet have.<br />

Which texts and artifacts c< belong" to <strong>the</strong> year <strong>1926</strong>? According to our<br />

goal <strong>of</strong> coming as close as possible to <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> th<strong>at</strong> <strong>time</strong> span, <strong>the</strong><br />

range <strong>of</strong> pertinent m<strong>at</strong>erials potentially comprises <strong>the</strong> traces <strong>of</strong> all experiences<br />

th<strong>at</strong> could be had in <strong>1926</strong>. If one takes this formula seriously, it<br />

implies <strong>the</strong> oblig<strong>at</strong>ion to deal with <strong>the</strong> almost infinite mass <strong>of</strong> such traces<br />

coming from periods and cultures prior to <strong>1926</strong>-provided <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

available in <strong>1926</strong>. <strong>In</strong> order to narrow down this overwhelming complexity,<br />

I started by concentr<strong>at</strong>ing on books, objects, and events th<strong>at</strong> <strong>at</strong>tracted<br />

a certain level <strong>of</strong> public <strong>at</strong>tention during <strong>the</strong> year in question. Among<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, it makes no difference whe<strong>the</strong>r a text, say, was actually published
