IMMANENCE = TRANSCENDENCE (DEATH) 381<br />

<strong>of</strong> religion is far more complex, share some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> approaches <strong>of</strong> primitive<br />

societies in <strong>the</strong>ir handling <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> de<strong>at</strong>h. These approaches<br />

concern, above all, <strong>the</strong> physical fact <strong>of</strong> de<strong>at</strong>h. As a compens<strong>at</strong>ion, civilized<br />

societies establish and make plausible certain taboos <strong>of</strong> hygiene and<br />

cleanliness. Adherence to <strong>the</strong>se prescriptions replaces <strong>the</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> de<strong>at</strong>h.<br />

An altern<strong>at</strong>ive approach lies in defining de<strong>at</strong>h as eternal-and <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

essential-life" (Staerke, 101). At Sigmund Freud's instig<strong>at</strong>ion, Staerke's<br />

essay, with its functional interpret<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> De<strong>at</strong>h-and-life paradox,<br />

wins an award for psychoanalytic research and practice (Almanach, 93).<br />

This is quite astonishing because, simultaneously, Freud himself begins<br />

an essay on De<strong>at</strong>h, life, and sexuality which-instead <strong>of</strong> taking a functional<br />

approach-is in fact a remythologiz<strong>at</strong>ion. Psychoanalysis, he<br />

claims, "derives all mental processes (apart from <strong>the</strong> reception <strong>of</strong> external<br />

stimuli) from <strong>the</strong> interplay <strong>of</strong> forces, which assist or inhibit one<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r, combine with one ano<strong>the</strong>r, enter into compromises with one<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r, etc. All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se forces are originally in <strong>the</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ure <strong>of</strong> instincts<br />

... Theoretical specul<strong>at</strong>ion leads to <strong>the</strong> suspicion th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

two fundamental instincts which lie concealed behind <strong>the</strong> manifest egoinstincts<br />

and object-instincts: namely (a) Eros, <strong>the</strong> instinct which strives<br />

for ever closer union, and (b) <strong>the</strong> instinct <strong>of</strong> destruction, which leads<br />

toward <strong>the</strong> dissolution <strong>of</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> is <strong>living</strong>. <strong>In</strong> psychoanalysis <strong>the</strong> manifest<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> force <strong>of</strong> Eros is given <strong>the</strong> name 'libido'" (Freud, 265).<br />
