= Collectivity (Leader)] What began as an attempt at a military coup
soon turns into an action whose practical goals remain enigmatic: "The
already superficial political action of the Prestes Column was weakened
by its obsession with mobility-and it was finally defeated by general
rejection on the part of the population" (Drummond, 64). If anything is
clear in Prestes' own declarations, it is the absence of strategic objectives
beyond the potentially infinite continuity of movement: "A war in Brazil
will be a war of movement-in whichever province it may take place.
For us, the revolutionaries, movement is victory" (6). There is no doubt,
however, that such "victorious movement" reconstitutes-and thus reaffirms-the
space of Brazil's national territory.
