The promotional flier <strong>of</strong> Christy Walsh, Babe Ruth's manager, fe<strong>at</strong>ures<br />

<strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> twelve n<strong>at</strong>ionally famous <strong>at</strong>hletes, among <strong>the</strong>m Lou Gehrig,<br />

Babe Ruth himself, and Pop Warner, <strong>the</strong> coach <strong>of</strong> Stanford's successful<br />

football team. Arranged in a semicircle, <strong>the</strong> names are each printed<br />

within <strong>the</strong> outline <strong>of</strong> a star, and Walsh's text explicitly refers to this<br />

design: "Stars available for Personal Appearance, Merchandise Endorsements,<br />

Exhibition Baseball Games, Vaudeville, Moving Pictures, Radio,<br />

and All Forms <strong>of</strong> Commercial Contracts, under Christy Walsh Management,<br />

570 Seventh Avenue, New York City" (Ritter and Rucker, 158).<br />

Stars are marketable, and not only because <strong>the</strong>y have specific skills th<strong>at</strong><br />

large crowds <strong>of</strong> spect<strong>at</strong>ors are eager to admire-for example, in "Exhibition<br />

Baseball Games." Stars also gr<strong>at</strong>ify <strong>the</strong> more diffuse desire to<br />

enjoy <strong>the</strong>ir "Personal Appearance" and to imit<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Weeks before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cabaret and revue season in Paris, where<br />

Josephine Baker has risen to new heights <strong>of</strong> stardom, "Josephine Baker<br />

dolls, costumes, perfumes, [and] pomades" fill <strong>the</strong> shopwindows, toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with a product called "Bakerfix," which helps women smooth<br />

down <strong>the</strong>ir hair into a glossy cap so <strong>the</strong>y can look more like <strong>the</strong> muchadmired<br />

black dancer (Rose, 100). [see Gomina] The movie actor<br />

Rudolph Valentino sports a hairstyle th<strong>at</strong> has "caused a worldwide<br />

boom in <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>of</strong> Vaseline." He has also launched <strong>the</strong> fashion <strong>of</strong><br />

wearing a go<strong>at</strong>ee, and, breaking traditional gender taboos, has made<br />

wristw<strong>at</strong>ches and "slave bracelets" widely popular among men (Orbanz,<br />
