103). Concerns and actions th<strong>at</strong>, outside <strong>the</strong> arena, belong to <strong>the</strong> space<br />

<strong>of</strong> privacy become part <strong>of</strong> a public performance within <strong>the</strong> artificial daily<br />

life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> six-day race. No o<strong>the</strong>r event fulfills more perfectly th<strong>at</strong> desire<br />

which makes actors and <strong>at</strong>hletes into stars: <strong>the</strong> audience's desire to<br />

follow <strong>the</strong>ir priv<strong>at</strong>e life as closely as <strong>the</strong>ir performance. This becomes<br />

possible for <strong>the</strong> spect<strong>at</strong>ors because <strong>the</strong>y share with <strong>the</strong>ir heroes a space<br />

in which <strong>the</strong> boundary between priv<strong>at</strong>e and public is erased. Little wonder<br />

th<strong>at</strong> some fans stay in this world, close to <strong>the</strong> stars, for 144 hoursuntil,<br />

on <strong>the</strong> seventh day, <strong>the</strong>y return to <strong>the</strong>ir jobs and families.<br />
