There are only a few French intellectuals who, like Paul Morand, admit<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are interested in <strong>the</strong> cultural phenomena associ<strong>at</strong>ed with American<br />

capitalism. Among <strong>the</strong> many things th<strong>at</strong> fascin<strong>at</strong>e Morand in <strong>the</strong> United<br />

St<strong>at</strong>es and Canada are high-rise buildings, which fe<strong>at</strong>ure prominently in<br />

his travel account Rien que fa terre. Struggling to find a language th<strong>at</strong><br />

reson<strong>at</strong>es with <strong>the</strong>ir st<strong>at</strong>us as emblems <strong>of</strong> modern life's glamorous New<br />

Sobriety, he describes <strong>the</strong> skyscrapers <strong>of</strong> downtown Manh<strong>at</strong>tan as<br />

"erect[ing] <strong>the</strong>ir fifty magical stories, like Chaldean astrological towers,<br />

to follow more closely <strong>the</strong> star <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dollar" (Morand, 16). [see Sobriety<br />

vs. Exuberance] This comparison between New York's skyscrapers and<br />

ancient Mesopotamian structures built for astrological observ<strong>at</strong>ions may<br />

be technically inappropri<strong>at</strong>e, but it is consistent with a widely popular<br />

p<strong>at</strong>tern <strong>of</strong> dual-level experience. Morand <strong>at</strong>tributes modern economic<br />

functions to <strong>the</strong>se architectural marvels and to <strong>the</strong>ir enormous internal<br />

complexity [see Elev<strong>at</strong>ors], but he draws <strong>the</strong> model for his analogy from<br />

his knowl<strong>edge</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient world. [see Au<strong>the</strong>nticity vs. Artificiality]<br />

After crossing North America in an express train [see Railroads],<br />

Morand arrives in Vancouver, where he performs <strong>the</strong> first gesture th<strong>at</strong><br />

has become oblig<strong>at</strong>ory for tourists from Europe: "I go up to <strong>the</strong> sixteenth<br />

floor and come out on <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vancouver Hotel. There is a terrace<br />

with a strip <strong>of</strong> soot where, in front, are growing those silly flowers which<br />

find <strong>the</strong>ir way to <strong>the</strong> English heart more quickly than words can. The<br />

blue amphi<strong>the</strong><strong>at</strong>er <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rockies always presents <strong>the</strong> same show, which<br />
