North Pole to Alaska and down the West Coast of North America
confuses the relation between center and periphery in the mental mapping

With the form and motion of the earth becoming factors relevant
to practical daily activities, the movements of human beings emerge as
something more complex than those of bodies going from point to point
within an intrinsically stable space. With the disappearance of the transcendental
realm once inhabited by God, movement can assume a new
status as one of the transcendental conditions for human life [see Immanence
vs. Transcendence]. "I realize here, at the moment of landing, that
I do not like traveling-I like only movement. It is the sole truth, the sole
beauty. I will not be ashamed of my life so long as it is mobile. The only
fixed point: the idea of change. My imperfect art is nothing but the
measurement taken between two changing points" (Morand, 31-32).
