roles, as is <strong>the</strong> case with "Tiny Nicomedes <strong>the</strong> Typist" (a cartoon in<br />

Caras y Caretas, November 6), <strong>the</strong>se characters are given <strong>the</strong> most<br />

neg<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>at</strong>tributes currently associ<strong>at</strong>ed with women. Opening his master's<br />

correspondence, Tiny Nicomedes steals a <strong>the</strong><strong>at</strong>er ticket. Predictably,<br />

<strong>the</strong> play th<strong>at</strong> he sees is about <strong>the</strong> crime and punishment <strong>of</strong> a thief, and<br />

this plot makes Nicomedes lose all vestiges <strong>of</strong> his "masculine composure."<br />

He leaves <strong>the</strong> show and runs straight into his master who, without<br />

a ticket, stands waiting <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>at</strong>er's entrance.<br />

Germany alone now has 3.5 million nonindustrial employees, <strong>of</strong><br />

whom more than 40 percent are women (fewer than 20 percent <strong>of</strong><br />

German women work in industry). Concurrently, <strong>the</strong> typewriter and <strong>the</strong><br />

calcul<strong>at</strong>or have become widespread in business administr<strong>at</strong>ion, and <strong>the</strong>re<br />

has been a shift from tailor-made to ready-made clo<strong>the</strong>s. It thus follows<br />

th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> positions most frequently occupied by women are those <strong>of</strong><br />

secretary and saleswoman (Chronik, 36; von Soden and Schmidt, 25f£.).<br />

Certain st<strong>at</strong>us symbols th<strong>at</strong> accompany <strong>the</strong>se jobs lead <strong>the</strong> public to<br />

gre<strong>at</strong>ly overestim<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> distance th<strong>at</strong> separ<strong>at</strong>es industrial workers and<br />

nonindustrial employees. From this perspective, <strong>the</strong> situ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> clerical<br />

and sales personnel in <strong>the</strong> United St<strong>at</strong>es emerges as a much-admired<br />

example. They are paid monthly (instead <strong>of</strong> weekly, as factory workers<br />

are); <strong>the</strong>ir workday is only eight hours; and, in <strong>the</strong>ir spare <strong>time</strong>, <strong>the</strong>y can<br />

increasingly afford middle-class pursuits, which implies th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y can pay<br />

for <strong>the</strong> services <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r employees. Since <strong>the</strong>y are devoted to pleasing,<br />

employees tend to adapt to <strong>the</strong> tastes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir employers and are strongly<br />

disposed to overlook <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ten flagrant forms <strong>of</strong> exploit<strong>at</strong>ion to which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are exposed. Female workers, instead <strong>of</strong> protesting salaries th<strong>at</strong> lie<br />

15 percent below those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir male counterparts (Chronik, 36), display<br />

th<strong>at</strong> "will-to-happiness" which D. H. Lawrence finds characteristic <strong>of</strong><br />

"most modern people"-but which he <strong>at</strong>tributes especially to K<strong>at</strong>e, <strong>the</strong><br />

protagonist <strong>of</strong> his novel The Plumed Serpent (Lawrence, 8). As a consequence<br />

<strong>of</strong> this commitment to happiness, secretaries and saleswomen<br />

wind up sending <strong>the</strong>ir modest income back to its source. They buy<br />

fashionable clo<strong>the</strong>s or, <strong>at</strong> least, fashion magazines which help <strong>the</strong>m<br />

dream <strong>of</strong> a change in <strong>the</strong>ir social st<strong>at</strong>us. The media, in exchange, furnish<br />

<strong>the</strong>se women with an exuberantly positive self-image: "No one should<br />

think it strange th<strong>at</strong> salesgirls are <strong>the</strong> most assiduous readers <strong>of</strong> fashion<br />

magazines and th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y strive to find <strong>the</strong> most effective means to ward<br />

<strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong>ir gre<strong>at</strong>est enemy: age. They are <strong>the</strong> industrious worker bees <strong>of</strong>
