10 Text <strong>of</strong> apology in English<br />
The text <strong>of</strong> the apology in English as set out in the deed <strong>of</strong><br />
settlement is as follows:<br />
(1) The Crown recognises the struggles <strong>of</strong> the ancestors <strong>of</strong> Ngāti<br />
<strong>Tuwharetoa</strong> (<strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Plenty</strong>) in pursuit <strong>of</strong> their claims for<br />
justice against the Crown since the raupatu and hereby makes<br />
this apology to Ngāti <strong>Tuwharetoa</strong> (<strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Plenty</strong>), to their<br />
ancestors, and to their descendants.<br />
(2) The Crown pr<strong>of</strong>oundly regrets and unreservedly apologises<br />
for the breaches <strong>of</strong> the Treaty <strong>of</strong> Waitangi (Te Tiriti o<br />
Waitangi) and its principles.<br />
(3) In particular, the Crown pr<strong>of</strong>oundly regrets and unreservedly<br />
apologises for its confiscation <strong>of</strong> Ngāti <strong>Tuwharetoa</strong> (<strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Plenty</strong>) lands and for the cumulative effect <strong>of</strong> its actions over<br />
the generations, which have had a damaging effect on the<br />
welfare, economy, environment, and development <strong>of</strong> Ngāti<br />
<strong>Tuwharetoa</strong> (<strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Plenty</strong>).<br />
(4) The Crown pr<strong>of</strong>oundly regrets its failure to acknowledge the<br />
mana and rangatiratanga <strong>of</strong> Ngāti <strong>Tuwharetoa</strong> (<strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Plenty</strong>).<br />
(5) Accordingly, with this apology, the Crown seeks to atone for<br />
these wrongs and to begin the process <strong>of</strong> healing (and). The<br />
Crown looks forward to building a relationship <strong>of</strong> mutual trust<br />
and co-operation with Ngāti <strong>Tuwharetoa</strong> (<strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Plenty</strong>).<br />
