8 Text <strong>of</strong> acknowledgements in English<br />

The text <strong>of</strong> the acknowledgements in English as set out in the<br />

deed <strong>of</strong> settlement is as follows:<br />

(1) The Crown acknowledges that the people <strong>of</strong> Ngāti<br />

<strong>Tuwharetoa</strong> (<strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Plenty</strong>) have sought acknowledgement <strong>of</strong><br />

their grievances since the raupatu and that recognition <strong>of</strong> these<br />

grievances is long overdue. The Crown hereby acknowledges<br />

the legitimacy <strong>of</strong> the Ngāti <strong>Tuwharetoa</strong> (<strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Plenty</strong>) historical<br />

grievances and makes the following acknowledgements<br />

(set out in subsections (2) to (6)).<br />

(2) The Crown acknowledges that:<br />

(a) its confiscation <strong>of</strong> Ngāti <strong>Tuwharetoa</strong> (<strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Plenty</strong>)<br />

lands in the Eastern <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Plenty</strong> by means <strong>of</strong> the New<br />

Zealand <strong>Settlement</strong>s Act 1863 extinguished Māori customary<br />

title to land and deprived Ngāti <strong>Tuwharetoa</strong><br />

(<strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Plenty</strong>) <strong>of</strong> tribal lands and resources; and<br />

(b) the confiscation <strong>of</strong> Ngāti <strong>Tuwharetoa</strong> (<strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Plenty</strong>)<br />

lands had a damaging effect on the welfare, economy,<br />

and development <strong>of</strong> Ngāti <strong>Tuwharetoa</strong> (<strong>Bay</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Plenty</strong>),<br />

deprived the iwi <strong>of</strong> access to its traditional natural<br />
