GIRLS TENNIS IS SECOND
their season with a solid
Girls Tennis (7-3) will play their third
League Finals match today at the
Woodbridge tennis courts after school,
which is an individual tournament between
the top six players from each school.
“We’re battling,” Coach Ric Barth revealed,
“We’re trying to improve.”
The girls started off the season with
four wins and two losses against their biggest
rivals in league, Northwood High
School and University High School.
“We’re doing okay, but we’ve had
like 3 or 4 losses, so we can do better, I
think,” sophomore Noor Schepers said.
Coach Barth believes that the team’s success
was hampered by injuries and illness.
“Our doubles is our strength, and our
F ootball (3-5) lost the homecoming game on Thursday
Oct. 27 against Corona Del Mar, putting them
behind in the season
“Even though we have lost a few games we have
also won and you can’t do better unless you learn from
your mistakes and that’s the case here. I know our team
will just keep getting better and hopefully win our next
couple games”. Senior Derek Calderon said
“My goal is the same every year” he wants the team
to win every game but it seems that that is not the goal,
the goal is to work as a team and do the best they can,
Coach Rick Gibson said.
Since the team has not won games recently they will
not be going to CIF even if they win their last game.
The last game of the season is tomorrow at 7:00 pm
against Northwood at Irvine Stadium.
number one singles. That’s it.” Barth
said. “We don’t have much depth. We
had so many sicknesses and injuries.”
“We don’t have the right amount of good
players,” sophomore Jenny Leong said.
The team has many underclassmen
this season because a lot of
seniors graduated last year.
“We lost six seniors last year. We
just don’t have as good of a team.”
Freshman Stephanie Hazell said.
Despite the team’s inexperience this
year, senior Emily Yeh is still optimistic.
“We’re doing good as usual. We lost a lot
of seniors, but we’re still strong.” Yeh said.
“It’s a tough year. We have a
very tough league.” Barth said.
“We’re in the hardest league, against
Uni and everything.” Junior Ivana
Rakic said, “Yeah, it’s just tough,
but we’re doing well anyway.”
Even though the team is playing
in a tough league and has a lot of new players,
they still managed to qualify for CIF.
The team’s 14-4 win against Northwood
High School last Thursday secured
their 2nd place standing in their
league and qualified them for CIF.
 Boys water polo
started league with
a win and ended
with a series of
losses
by Jazmyn Fitisemanu
Contributing Writer
Boys’ water polo (1-8) aimed for CIF
but came up short placing fifth in league.
Previous games which have hindered
their standings in league were due to “a couple
of close games,” Coach Matt Campbell
explained, “[We] lost to University by 2,
lost to Irvine by 3, so that put us in fifth.”
“Our league is very competitive,”
Campbell said, “meaning that everyone in
our league has been in the top 15 of Orange
County at some point.” In their efforts to
place higher in league, Campbell added,
“That means we have to upset somebody
to make it into CIF at some point.”
“…We (weren’t) doing that great, but
we’re still trying to keep our heads high,”
freshman Nick Giberson said. With their
heads held high, the seniors leave the season
with pride of the games played.
“All the athletes here are top-notch,”
said senior Zach Tudhope, “…unfortunately
we didn’t make it to CIF…
but I’m pretty sure we ended the season
with a positive note of more wins
than losses, so I’m happy for that.”
Cross Country Heads to League Finals
 Today’s league finals
will determine the team’s
qualification for CIF and
league title
by Jiyoo Chang
Boys and girls varsity cross country
will compete in the Pacific Coast
League Finals at Irvine Regional Park
tomorrow at 1 p.m. after two successful
league meets. The Pacific Coast League
includes Woodbridge, Irvine, University,
Northwood, Beckman and Corona Del
Mar High School. To qualify for CIF, the
team has to be in the top three in League
or be in the top 13 in the division.
On Oct. 6th the team had the first
league meet of the year. Boys varsity and
girls varsity both finished first place in
the race. Senior Molly Babcock finished
first and senior Coco Evans finished
second at the first meet.
After this first league meet, Coach
George Varvas commented, “I am confident
that we will continue the success we
are enjoying up to this point and we will
continue to improve.”
Before the second league meet, the
team earned trophies in five of the seven
races at Orange County Invitational at
Irvine Regional Park.
According to Coach Varvas, “A
meet of this level can obscure a team’s
performance and maybe minimize our
accomplishments,” but, “the meet was so
valuable in our preparation for the future
championship meets.”
At the second league meet on Oct. 27,
most of the team had their best times.
“Our strength is that our team is so
big [in size] and deep in talent,” said
Coach Cheryl Evans.
For the girls, she added that the
team is very experienced. However this
year the team moved up to Division 2,
their fourth season of cross country and competing in league finals today.
GIRLS GOLF FINISHES SEASON
 Sophomore Genie Short
qualified for C.I.F Individuals
Girls’ golf (6-3), led by senior Mackenzie Fahr, has finished
their season tied for third in league.
The teams’ final matches of the season took place on Oct.
17 and 18. Sophomore Genie Short also qualified for C.I.F.
individuals which took place on Oct. 31. Short qualified for
the finals on Nov. 7 at Talega. The team finished off the season
with a loss by one stroke to Northwood that would have left
them a share of the league title.
“We had a great season in a tough, competitive
which is more competitive. Coach Varvas
also claimed that the girls team has
talented front runners like Babcock and
Evans along with the back runners with
great depth like sophomore Madeline
Bradfold and senior Annie Chan.
On the boys side, Coach Evans commented,
“What we need to overcome on
the boys side is how young our team is
overall. [But] our young members are
really stepping up to be great on Varsity.”
Some of the front runners in the boys
team are senior Dragan Simic, senior
Brandon Ferguson and sophomore
Jackson Marshall.
When asked about the team’s direction
in the future, Coach Evans said, “I
believe that our boys and girls can win
league and go on to be successful at CIF
and State.”
league,” said Coach Tracy Roberts. They faced many challenges
and highly ranked teams, including a difficult match
against University, which ended in a win with their lowest
score of the season, a 96. “With the girls constantly practicing,”
Roberts said, “I was proud of them and Fahr had great leadership
this season.”
Fahr, who has been in girl’s golf for all four years of high
school felt that the team played rather well and looks back on a
few of their tougher matches against a competitive Northwood
with pride at their close scores. “I think we did really well this
year, we won quite a bit of our league games and definitely
did better than last year,” Fahr said. “We definitely improved a
lot from the beginning of the year and kept getting better and
better.” As the team captain this year she was satisfied with the
team’s performance and was proud of their overall placement
in league.
Now you know...
We all know Michael Jordan,
Zizou and the Williams
sisters. But how many
of us know Trischa Zorn, Matt
Scott or Tanni Grey-Thompson?
Zorn is from Orange County,
and has won 55 Olympic medals.
Scott joined the US National team
at 18 and has starred in a Nike
commercial. Grey-Thompson won
the London Marathon six times
and 11 gold medals. It’s amazing
that these aren’t some of the first
names that come to mind when
we think of “athletes”. But there is
one key difference with these three
versus our better known athletes.
Scott and Grey-Thompson both
have spina bifida and Zorn is blind.
They are all Paralympic athletes.
The Paralympic Games started in
1948 as a way for British World War
II Veterans with spinal cord injuries
to compete in sports. It has blossomed
into an international event
corresponding with the Olympic
Games and is now one of the biggest
international sporting events.
Zorn, Scott and Grey-Thompson
are all decorated Paralympians
who have competed across the
globe. Together they have accumulated
72 Paralympic medals.
These athletes not only display
immense courage getting past
their disabilities to compete at
an international caliber, but are
also helping fight discrimination.
A University of British Columbia
study showed that after the Paralympic
Winter Games in Vancouver,
citizens were more willing to
hire disabled people and made
buildings more accessible. For
these athletes, its more than just
gaining medals, they are also on a
mission to fight discrimination that
the disabled community faces.
So next year when you are
watching the Olympics, don’t just
pay attention to the able-bodied
athletes. Watch out for the next Trischa
Zorn, and make sure to catch
Matt Scott’s basketball game. It’s
hard enough being an Olympic
athlete, imagine
being a Paralympic
one. Give the Paralympians
the recognition
they deserve.
