YOU CAN MAKE
AN IMPACT!
A PERSONAL NOTE FROM
COACH EVERETT WITHERS

Kenan Stadium will look remarkably different in 2011 and
my staff and I are thrilled that you will be a part of Carolina
Football and all the excitement in Chapel Hill this fall . The
Loudermilk Center for Excellence and the Blue Zone will
help all student-athletes achieve their goals and will make
the Kenan Stadium gameday experience even better . Here’s
what you can do to help .
1. BE HERE AND BE EARLY!
Players and fans see the atmosphere on campus during game
days, and we need to have the best atmosphere around .
2. BE A PART OF THE OLD
WELL WALK!
The team will walk from the Old Well to the stadium 2 hours
and 30 minutes before each kickoff . This Carolina tradition is
your unique way to show support and get the team fired up!
3. BE IN YOUR SEATS
BEFORE KICKOFF!
It makes an impact on the players, coaches and recruits to
see the crowd hyped up when we’re taking the field . Make
Kenan a great home-field advantage from the moment that
the band takes the field . Plan to get in your seats early!
4. GET LOUD!
You can affect a game by showing your support for the Heels,
and there is no better way to do that than by getting loud!
5. HAVE FUN!
We’re getting ready to accomplish some great things at
Carolina . Help us make an impact .
YOU CAN MAKE AN IMPACT!
Be a part of the great things happening with
Carolina Football! Go Heels!
DEAR CAROLINA FANS:
Thank you for spending
part of your day with the
Tar Heels and for sharing
the experience of a
college football weekend
with friends and family
of all ages . Athletics is
a great way for alumni
and friends to reconnect
with the university
and with Chapel Hill .
Football games at Kenan Stadium offer many
opportunities to create memories that last a
lifetime . There’s tailgating with friends, touring the
campus, welcoming our team at the Old Well Walk,
and, of course, four quarters of exciting action .
This Fan Guide provides a timeline of events and
activities, information on parking and tailgating,
a map of Kenan Stadium and its surrounding
areas, a team roster, and so much more .
The Loudermilk Center for Excellence is a major
addition in the east end of the stadium . Thank you
for your patience as we built this beautiful facility
and as we welcome fans into the Blue Zone for
the very first time this fall . This guide has some
answers to your questions about this new part of
the stadium and you can also ask the ushers and
stadium personnel for any assistance in getting
around the newly renovated Kenan Stadium .
4

We hope you will enjoy a safe and exciting game
day experience at the University of North Carolina .
Please remember to display good sportsmanship
and be good neighbors to other fans inside the
stadium and also in the community . Let’s keep
Chapel Hill clean and safe and allow everyone
to fully enjoy his or her day at the stadium .
Go Heels!
Heel Sports Network the past
six years, will call radio play-byplay
for the University of North
Carolina football and men’s
basketball broadcasts . Angell
moves into the play-by-play
Woody Durham, who stepped down in April after
40 seasons as the Voice of the Tar Heels .
Angell, 32, a native of Jacksonville, N .C ., has worked
in a number of roles at the network for the past 11
years, including calling play-by-play for Carolina baseball
the past eight seasons .
A 2001 UNC graduate, Angell was a member of
Durham’s broadcast team for nearly 70 Tar Heel
football games and more than 200 men’s basketball
games, including the 2009 national championship .
He called play-by-play on the network during several
ACC Tournaments, the Las Vegas Invitational, Puerto
Rico Tipoff Challenge and numerous preseason basketball
games .
He has hosted TarHeelBlue .com broadcasts of Late
Night with Roy Williams and football’s Signing Day
Live, produced and hosted features on the coaches’
television shows, written for Tar Heel Monthly, and
called play-by-play for UNC women’s basketball and
women’s soccer .
Angell is an assistant director of New Media at UNC
where he has helped to produce video board and
special Internet features that have been shown online,
at various athletic venues, and at special events
such as the 100-year celebration of Carolina Basketball
. He was an associate producer on the commemorative
DVD that chronicled the 2005 men’s
basketball national championship .
I’M A TAR HEEL. It’s a simple statement—a phrase that can
mean something different for each person who says it. Underlying
it is a thread common to each member of the Carolina Family. That
underlying thread is the commitment each Tar Heel has to do things
the Carolina Way—with great integrity, a dedication to fellow Tar Heels,
an unwavering loyalty to Carolina, and a commitment to excellence.
The Carolina Way also entails a commitment to excellence—a
commitment that is unrivaled elsewhere. It is evident in Carolina’s 37
team national championships, 54 individual national championships,
and numerous conference titles. It is evident in the classroom as
Carolina boasts an outstanding 85 percent graduation rate among
student-athletes. It is evident in the community as Tar Heel studentathletes
and staff performed more than 20,000 hours of community
service last year.
The Rams Club shares the commitment to a high level of excellence
that is characteristic of this University. The Rams Club supports
Carolina’s broad-based athletics program by offering scholarship and
program support assistance to more than 450 student-athletes in 28
varsity sports each year.
As a Rams Club member, you can enjoy the pride of investing in our
student-athletes and their success. Your renewed membership in The
Rams Club gives our outstanding student-athletes an opportunity
to give their own definition of what it means TO BE A TAR HEEL.

I believe in Carolina…and in its dedication
to do things the right way.
I’m Tydreke Powell, and I’m a Tar Heel.
COACH WITHERS
52
Charlotte native
Everett Withers was
promoted to interim
head coach on July
28, 2011 . Withers
is in his 24th season
as a coach and has
experience at both
the professional and
college level . He has
served as Carolina’s
defensive coordinator
and secondary
coach the last three
seasons .
Decimated by personnel losses and injuries in 2010, Carolina’s
defense still ranked fourth in the ACC and 30th in the country
as the Tar Heels played with a new lineup virtually every week .
Defensive tackle Quinton Coples earned first-team All-ACC
honors and linebacker Bruce Carter was a second-team pick .
Following the season, five Tar Heel defensive players were
taken in the NFL Draft, including first-round selection Robert
Quinn, who missed all of the 2010 season .
In addition to his duties as the coordinator, Withers oversees
the defensive secondary, which has developed into one of
the best units in the country . Carolina picked off 19 passes
in 2010 to match the previous year’s total, and has 58
interceptions over the past three seasons . Safety Da’Norris
Searcy, a fifth-round pick by Buffalo, led the team with four
interceptions in 2010 .
In 2009, the Tar Heels’ defense was among the nation’s elite,
ranking sixth in total defense, 10th against the run, 13th in
scoring defense and 14th in pass defense . Carolina was the
only school in the country ranked in the top 15 in total yards
allowed, scoring defense, run defense, pass defense, pass
efficiency defense, third-down defense and tackles for losses .
Six Carolina defenders were named all-conference, including
first-team picks Quinn, Quan Sturdivant, Kendric Burney and
Deunta Williams . Carolina had 19 interceptions and set a
single-season ACC record with 508 interception return yards .
Withers was nominated in 2009 for the Broyles Award, which
is presented annually to the nation’s top assistant coach .

In 2008, the opportunistic Tar Heel defense ranked eighth in
the country with 20 interceptions, just one shy of the school
record .
Withers came to North Carolina after serving one season as
the University of Minnesota’s defensive coordinator in 2007 .
Withers spent six seasons with the Tennessee Titans from
2001-06 under head coach Jeff Fisher . From 2002-04,
Withers helped the Titans defense tally 57 interceptions, which
was the most for the franchise over a three-year period since
1993-95 . The 57 interceptions also ranked fourth in the AFC
and eighth overall during that time . The Titans totaled 21 picks
in 2004, including 16 by the secondary .
In 2002, Withers directed a revamped secondary that added
safeties Lance Schulters and rookie Tank Williams . The new
arrangement helped the defense earn a top 10 ranking and
Schulters’ six interceptions were the most by a Titans safety
since 1993 . Withers also developed Andre Dyson into a starter
as a rookie in 2001 and helped him total 16 interceptions
during his four-year Titan career, including six his final season .
Prior to working with the Titans, Withers was defensive backs
coach under Mack Brown at Texas from 1998-2000 .
Withers joined the Longhorns after three seasons (1995-
97) as defensive coordinator at Louisville . While at Louisville,
Withers helped current New York Giants All-Pro cornerback
Sam Madison earn All-America honors for the Cardinals .
Withers’ first National Football League experience came with
the New Orleans Saints where he worked as defensive quality
control in 1994 . Prior to his experience with the Saints, Withers
was defensive backs coach at Southern Mississippi for two
seasons (1992-93) and outside linebackers coach at Tulane in
1991 . The first three years of Withers’ coaching career came
at Austin Peay, where he was defensive coordinator (1988-89)
and special teams/wide receivers coach (1990) .
Withers earned his bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State
in 1985 . He was also a standout defensive back and captain for
the Mountaineers from 1981-85 . Withers and his wife, Kara,
have two children, Tia and Pierce .
