Not only the shipyards, but also the suppliers are affected
Following the insolvency of Sietas Werft also the
management of P+S Werften had to file for insolvency
for its two shipyards in Wolgast and Stralsund.
Almost 2,000 workers at the two yards and many
working for their suppliers are directly or indirectly
hit by the insolvency and worried for their jobs.
The insolvency of one of the big German shipyards
is yet another chapter in the painful story of decline
experienced by the German shipyard industry
for many years.
As well as the issue of German shipyards dropping
beneath the radar of German ship-owners due to
their high prices compared with Asian competitors,
another factor is that the decrease in demand is also
putting us at risk of falling under the radar of the
suppliers which are so important to us. With 75%
of the cost of building a ship coming from outside
the shipyard, it is clear how important functional
partnerships with our suppliers are for our business
to succeed.

MEYER WERFT’s new, revised website has been online
since 24 September 2012. The site www.meyerwerft.de
presents a lively appearance and enhanced
contents. The company’s previous website was
online since 1997, and was extended over the years.
Hence it was about time now to make profound
changes to the site.
The new site is aimed at providing better access to
the information already offered in the past. For this
reason a lot of time and effort were invested in the
new presentation so as to offer a state-of-the-art
design, a clear navigation structure and improved
service. Next to the pages listed under the header
“Suppliers”, which were re-designed and updated,
the site continues to offer the well known information
on our ships and the yard, and also the popular

To survive in the long term we need innovative,
high-performing partners who are prepared to
have an even closer working relationship with us
and to join us in strategic planning to get our fantastic
products striding ahead.
If German shipyards and our suppliers close ranks
even further, both sides will benefit from it: improving
the supply chain, creating high-quality products
and services and planning long-term strategies
can give us advantages in terms of productivity
which will benefit both us and our suppliers.
We are prepared to work even harder to successfully
extend our joint ventures with partners – help us
ensure that sophisticated products which are ‚Made
in Germany‘ continue to roam the world‘s seas in
future.
