Don’t miss this exciting performance
by the student body!
Congratulations to Ms. Reed
Stone Academy’s music teacher, Jeannie Reed, is not only
Greenville County’s Teacher of the Year, but she has also been
named one of the 5 finalists for the South Carolina Teacher of
the Year! We are so proud of her.

Dear Parents,
From the Principal’s Desk...
March is here and so is testing. We administer MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) during
the entire month of March to measure student growth since the fall in math and reading.
(If you have difficulty reaching our guidance counselor or instructional coach this month,
please understand that they are testing.) You can discuss your child’s score at the third
quarter conference. We also administered ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) to fourth grade so
South Carolina can compare student achievement to national norms.
Greenville County Schools has unveiled a new parent portal that allows you to access,
online or by phone, much important information about your child’s attendance, grades,
assignments, test scores, transcripts, and much more. For instructions on how to use the
portal and for your password, drop by the main office with ID and you will be given a handout
with password.
We were delighted to learn that our SIC has been awarded a $2000 grant from Lowes to
enhance our garden and install a weather station. Congratulations to Carolyn Henry and the
committee for another notable success. SIC has been a dynamic organization this year!
I would like to congratulate Mrs. Jeanie Reed, Greenville County’s Teacher of the Year, for being
selected one of five finalists for South Carolina’s Teacher of the Year. We were NOT surprised
and wish her the best in the final round of competition. The winner will be announced April
25 in Columbia. I would also like to congratulate Mrs. Susan Merrill, second grade teacher.
She has had three students’ poems published this year in The Greenville News “Kids Page.”
She has also just been awarded “Best Buy Teach Award,” granting her $2000 to purchase
digital cameras and camcorders for a writing project called “Digital Diaries.” We are fortunate
to have so many stellar teachers at Stone.
Finally, I would like to commend Stone’s PTA. They made mini grants to almost every
teacher in the building for innovative instructional programs. All of the hard work in fund
raising will directly impact your child’s classroom. I commend Nancy Kennedy and last
year’s president, Dede Leftwich, for their leadership; the boards of both years; and all
the parents and students who worked to raise these funds. While we regret we were not
permitted to carpet classrooms, we were fortunate to have this cash reserve to fund so
many worthwhile projects.
As you can see, we continue to work hard to provide your child a quality education! Thank
you for your continued support.
Ed Holliday

A Note From The Gym
Mrs. Rohrer is looking for a really cool design
for this year’s sports day t-shirts. Students
wishing to design a t-shirt for sports day
should submit their designs to Mrs. Rohrer by
March 20th. Please remember to put the student’s
name and grade on the back of the design. The
student who designs the winning shirt will
receive a free sports day t-shirt.
Kans For Kids
Student Council is sponsoring Kans for Kids, a
yearlong food drive for the Salvation Army. Each
classroom has a deposit box. Canned goods will be
collected at the end of each month. The grade level
that collects the most can good for the year will
win a pajama, popcorn and movie party at the end
of this year.
Mile Club is still going on…
The “Mile Club” is an incentive program that
promotes physical fitness at home. In order
to participate, students are asked to walk or
run a predetermined distance within their
neighborhoods. Students should keep a log with
the date and distance which they ran/walked.
Parents/guardians will need to help by making sure
the distance traveled is accurate; I simply drive the
route in my vehicle to record the distance. Keep in
mind that safety comes first. I do not recommend
high traffic areas for this activity. Also, an adult
living with the student must sign the mile log
prior to turning it in. Every ten miles, students will
receive a foot that can be worn on their shoelaces.
Once a child has reach 100 miles, his or her name
will go a Mile Club board permanently mounted on
the gym wall.
Keep in mind:
1. Students must participate in this activity outside,
so treadmill walking will not count.
2. Skateboarding, skating, rollerblading, scooters
and bicycling do not count for distances. Only
walking or running. Students are participating in
this activity on an honor system. I ask that parents
not sign a students log if they are not 100% sure he
or she has traveled the said distance.
The Great Amazing Race Across South Carolina
3rd Grade Classes have begun The Great Amazing
Race Across South Carolina. Each class will need to
acquire 370 miles to get their team across South
Carolina. Please check the gym wall to see how
each class is doing. Students may walk or run
during recess or at home to advance their team. If
walking/running at home, parents will need to sign
the mileage log prior to sending it in. Good Luck!
From the
PTA President
Dear Parents,
As I was thinking about what to write about this
month, I kept coming back to the Spring Production.
This is the first year my daughter, a first grader, has
performed in the Spring Production and it has been
fun to witness her excitement. She tells me every
single day what they’ve done to prepare. I have to
admit I didn’t realize quite how hard the children work
on this program because my son never provided so
many details!
The Spring Production IS a big deal and I hope to
see all of you there. It is a chance for all the children
to show off what they have learned in related arts
this year. It is a chance for our 4th and 5th graders
participating in dance ensemble, chorus, and play
production to perform and to let the younger
children see what they have to look forward to. And
it’s a chance for others in the community to see why
Stone Academy is such a special place.
Your PTA is involved in the Spring Production in
many ways. We budgeted $4,900 to support the
production this year--$3,500 to rent McAlister
Auditorium and $1,400 for additional production
costs. PTA volunteers are planning a “cast party”
for the children and organizing t-shirts for all 550
students. This event represents yet another way
your volunteer time and fundraising efforts benefit
every single student at Stone Academy. So come out
and enjoy the show!
Spring Break comes at the end of this month.
Whether you are traveling or staying home, I hope
you all enjoy time away from school and come back
refreshed and ready to finish out a very successful
year.
I’ll see you March 11 at the big show!
News You Can Use…
from the Library
by Alice Littlejohn, Media Specialist
Looking for a safe place for your kids to research on
the Internet?
Meet Nettrekker!
The Greenville County school district has a new search
engine called “Nettrekker” designed specifically for
school age children. Nettrekker provides access to updated
and authoritative web-based information, without
the multitude of unrelated or inappropriate sites that
might appear in a general search engine. Topics are
arranged by categories or can be searched with key
words. Images and biographies are also available with
key word searches.
Nettrekker can be used at home as well as school.
There is a log-in box at the bottom of the Stone
Academy Home page.
We have a log-in name and password specifically for
Stone students, parents, and teachers.
Please contact Alice Littlejohn in the school
library for your user name and password.
Don’t forget DISCUS
(Digital Information for South Carolina Users)
DISCUS is another research tool that is available to
all students, parents, and teachers in South Carolina.
It is a database that is packed with academic articles
from a variety of sources – magazines, newspapers,
encyclopedias, dictionaries, and maps. Like Nettrekker,
the information has been specifically selected for
student use.
Please contact Alice Littlejohn in the school
library for your user name and password.
Look for the “DISCUS Kids” tab to find these online
resources:
• Amazing Animals of the World
• Biography Resource Center
• Kids Infobits
• SIRS Discoverer
• New Book of Knowledge
• Grolier Online Kids
• Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia
Nettrekker and DISCUS are safe and trustworthy sites
where students can find up-to-date and accurate
information. In the library, students are urged to try
these first before using Google or Yahoo. We hope you
will find these useful at home as well.
In our ongoing effort to promote literacy, Stone
Academy’s reading focus this year is to promote great
books for all readers.
• We have a student book review feature on Jumpstart
News which has been hosted by Zanzi Robinson, Allison
Orr, and Marc Pitrois. These model readers prepare and
present their own book talks to share with their peers.
In addition, guest readers are invited to talk about the
great books they are reading. First grader Zoe Massey and
second grader Mikala Zwerdling have appeared so far.
• Kindergarten through third grade classes listened to
book talks and read-alouds from the S.C. Picture Book
Award nominees, and the S. C. Children’s Book Award
nominees. Students were given the opportunity to vote
for their favorite book from each list. The votes were
sent to Columbia, SC to be included in the state-wide
count to determine South Carolina’s favorite books.
• Fourth and fifth grade classes listened to book talks
for the SC Children’s Book Award Nominees and also had
the opportunity to vote on their favorites. The Battle of
the Books Club members are reading ten of the twenty
titles from the list. Each week during club time, they
compete in teams to answer questions about the books.
One team will represent Stone at the district-level Battle
of the Books competition to be held Thursday, April 3.
• Book Character Day will be Monday, April 15, which
coincides with the first day of the spring Book Fair. On
this day, all students and teachers are invited to dress
up as their favorite book character. Each grade level will
have activities to promote a creative discussion among
students of who their character is, what their character
thinks, and why this character is special.
PTA and Stone Library to host
Children’s Book Illustrator, Michael White
and “The Start of Something Big”
Michael White is the illustrator of The Library
Dragon, The Secret of Old Zeb, and Harriet’s
Horrible Hair Day. In his language and visual arts
presentation, Michael demonstrates how a story
can evolve from a piece of artwork. The program
consists of transitions from the initial books to
final illustrations. With the students, Michael
draws simple subject matter than any age can
master, demonstrating the use of shadow and
light, followed by a demonstration of the airbrush
instrument. Students draw during the presentation.
Michael shows students that with their own talents,
anything is possible. All grade levels will participate
in this two day visit, scheduled for April 7 and 8.

News from the Dance Studio
by Cyndi Waddell–Poole
Stone Dance Ensemble participated in the Greenville County School District Mini Festival and
Dance Concert on February 9 -10. On Saturday, the students were treated to classes with The Power
Company directed by Martha Brim. Ms. Brim was a professor of Mrs.
Waddell–Poole’s in college. It was special for Mrs. Waddell–Poole to see
her students being taught by her mentor. On Sunday, the dance ensemble
performed in the District Dance Concert at Wade Hampton High School.
Mrs. Poole is extremely proud of the ensemble!!! A special thanks goes to
Mrs. Elizabeth Middleton for coordinating the reception that took place
after the concert.
Kindergarten students have been integrating visual art and dance
while exploring pathways used in dance. First grade dancers have been
learning about Native American dance and culture. Third–Fifth grade
students have just completed a unit exploring line dances. Ask them to
teach you the Bus Stop, Electric Slide or The Hustle.
Students in grades 1–5 are preparing for the Spring Production. Mark
your calendar for Tuesday, March 11. You do not want to miss the show
at Furman’s McAlister Auditorium starting at 6:30 p.m. See YOU there!
