HELP!
From the Executive Director
I have occasionally felt that scream rise from within –
most particularly when I think of the literally tens of
thousands of people we are not yet reaching. Our programs are strong. Support
groups are powerful, our Helpline gives life-saving information, and AAOC
educational programs change lives. At every turn, I stand proud, convinced that the
work our team accomplishes is of truly impeccable quality. Why then, a scream?
Sixty thousand people have or are at risk of having this disease in Orange County,
yet we serve less than 20% of that number! We could grow by almost 50% using
our existing resources in many areas – so how do we let people know we are here?
You.
My scream of “HELP” calls out to you to take this newsletter and offer it to a
friend. My call for assistance is for YOU to put our message in your church bulletin,
office newsletter, or add our Helpline and
website to your email signature for one month.
Invite us to speak at your club or house of
worship. Invite ten friends to your home for
dinner and invite a member of our team to tell
them about our work. Place one of our posters in your store window or a stack of
our newsletters on your desk. Ask your doctor if s/he knows of us or would place
materials in their waiting room. By calling 949.955.9000, you can get whatever help
you may need.
Friends, we need you – desperately. The slow, but clear, progress science is
making towards a cure does not help our families today, but you can. Spread the
word. Tell our story. Do not wait for someone else to ignite a passion for our cause
in your family and friends, ignite that passion yourselves, content in the knowledge
that you are saving families.
It takes money to do our work, of course. It takes dedicated staff to perform the
services we offer, and committed volunteer leadership to steer the ship. With all that
we do, and I believe that we do well, we do not help for a moment if those who
need us don’t know we are here. HELP!
2006: Year in Science
Brain Fitness
What is brain fitness and why is it important?
Physical fitness strengthens the body’s muscles and brain fitness strengthens the
mind. Brain fitness is the maintaining and improving of cognitive abilities. This
is important in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease because it will strengthen
the reserve of brain cells, their connections and may even build new nerve cells.
Who has time for another fitness program?
One in ten individuals age 65 or older has Alzheimer’s.The MetLife Foundation
Alzheimer’s Survey revealed that people 55 or older fear getting Alzheimer’s
disease more than any other major illness. Isn’t it worth it to invest ten to 20
minutes a day in a mental exercise program to reduce the risk of dementia?
Many of the activities that improve brain function are already part of most
people’s daily routine.
What does a brain fitness program consist of?
Healthy life style habits are the first steps.Adequate sleep, a well-balanced diet
high in antioxidants, physical exercise and stress management keep the body and
brain healthy. Here are a few brain healthy habits to include in your life:
Take steps to manage your stress
Exercise your brain every day
Challenge yourself to keep learning and growing
Stay socially connected
The Year in Science is our annual summary and month-by-month timeline
of key published studies, medical and scientific events, developments in
therapeutics and care, and public policy activities affecting the dementia
research and treatment arenas.
The 2006 edition includes a compelling look-back at the first recorded
case of Alzheimer’s disease, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Dr.
Alois Alzheimer’s 1906 report on his patient Auguste D.
Obtain your copy of the 2006: The Year in Alzheimer Science by visiting
Enhancing Mental Agility
The daily lives of seniors was recently the focus of two studies published in the
December 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Findings revealed that increased daily activities involving mental engagement
improved cognitive abilities over a five-year time span.
While these studies suggest there are steps we can take to reduce our risk for
Alzheimer’s disease, additional research is necessary to prove that maintaining
brain fitness is a definitive tool in the fight against this disease.
First Flowers of Spring
continued from page 1
Hundreds of pieces of Memories art are submitted annually. A
jury has the unenviable task of selecting relatively few for our
calendar and note cards, which are then sold to benefit our programs.
Area professionals then donate the framing of the art before it is
auctioned at our “Affair to Remember” gala (see page 3).
Art Expresses Emotions and Memories
Alzheimer’s and other memory loss disorders rob people
of their most precious possession - their memories. The
struggle to make sense of a once-familiar world is a constant
source of confusion and loss. Memories in the Making ®
allows those with Alzheimer’s to explore their memories and
emotions through art.The art they produce is a tangible,
often stirring, means of expression, one that speaks volumes
to families…to caregivers…to us all.
Established in 1986, the Memories in the Making
program was the inspiration of art enthusiast, Selly Jenny.
Selly, caregiver for her mother who suffered from
Alzheimer’s, identified art as a medium to help those with
dementia and limited verbal skills express their thoughts and
feelings.“Dementia patients need to be able to express their
feelings and when they no longer have words because of the
disease – art bridges the gap,” said La Doris “Sam” Heinly,
MSW, National Memories in the Making Consultant.
Memories in the Making Coordinator, Marilyn Lorey
hopes the art encourages empathy and understanding.“We
must acknowledge the person behind the disease,” Lorey
says,“It is important that we recognize their worth…their
value as individuals who have made significant contributions
throughout their lives.” Age and illness create a deceptive
veil, suggests Lorey, through their art, we can appreciate and
honor the essence of each individual.
program, call Marilyn at 949.757.3719 or visit our website at
Get Involved
Join Us in Giving Help & Hope
“I was sure no one understood what was happening to my family.
I was afraid that I just had to deal with this alone and I just didn’t
think I could. I was losing hope, until I found you…” caregiver
Whether volunteering your time, lending your talents or sharing your
treasures, you make it possible for us to give help and hope to
individuals who now may know only despair. Here are just a few ways
you can get involved.
Organize a Workplace Fundraiser
Follow the lead of the Pacific Life Good Guys, with creativity and
caring, they organized yearlong events internally to raise over $10,000
for our programs - a record amount! The Pacific Life Good Guys also
help by giving hundreds of volunteer hours each year. For more
information about workplace giving, call Shelli at 949.757.3706.
Turning Empty Ink Cartridges into Cash
It’s as easy as 1-2-3.
1. Just place your used cartridges (laser or ink jet) in baggies we
provide.
2. Put the baggie in the mail – postage is pre-paid.
3. Empties4Cash pays AAOC for each cartridge you send.
A perfect solution for empties – at home and at work. Have
questions? Need baggies? Call Shelli at 949.757.3706.
Make your Occasion Truly Special
Join the growing number of caring adults and children who are
incorporating philanthropy into their weddings, birthdays, and other
special occasions, asking friends to, in lieu of gifts, donate to the
Alzheimer’s Association. Gifts can be given on-line at www.alzoc.org
or by phone. Call Shelli at 949.757.3706.
Increase Your Income and Save on Taxes
Make a donation through a planned gift and create a lasting legacy in
the fight against Alzheimer’s while providing for your own future. To
learn more about enhancing your income and realizing generous tax
savings, call Michael Haggin, Director of Development at 949.757.3707
or by e-mail michael.haggin@alz.org.
Double the Value of your Gift
Ask your HR department about “matching gifts.” Many companies
will match their employee’s gifts to charitable organizations. Some
will even make a donation to organizations where employees
volunteer.
All donations are fully tax deductible, as allowed by law.
Donate your vehicle
Free pickup and towing of your unwanted car,
truck, boat or RV. Receive an IRS tax
deduction while helping to support the
Alzheimer's Association Orange County
Chapter. For details call Shelli at 949.757.3706
or visit our website at www.alzoc.org.
Easing the Journey of Others
Many of our nearly three hundred volunteers are all too
well acquainted with Alzheimer's; the disease has robbed
them of a loved one or friend. They dedicate their time
and talents in a determined effort to ease the journey for
others. Others simply see the growing incidence of the
disease and step in to do what they can to help.
Last month, we celebrated this compassionate contingent
at our annual Volunteer Recognition Breakfast at The
Daily Grill and acknowledged these volunteers for their
special efforts:
Patricia Paez of Latino Health Access received The Community
Awareness Award for her outstanding contributions to
increasing awareness of the Association and of Alzheimer's
disease. Patricia has been instrumental in our collaboration
with LHA, enhancing our ability to serve more Latino families.
Yen Tran and Linda Kaplan were each given The Helping Hand
Service Award in recognition of their outstanding commitment
and leadership. Yen coordinates and facilitates our Saturday
Vietnamese Support Group, generously donating refreshments
and creating special holiday celebrations. Linda is a longstanding
and tireless member of the Memories in the Making ®
program committee. A gifted framer, Linda also has donated
framing for our Memories collection since 1998.
Fred Ferketic and Janet Herman were each awarded the
Improving Lives of Others Award in recognition of outstanding
dedication to educating the public and increasing awareness
about Alzheimer's disease in the community. In addition to
assisting with health fairs and support groups, Fred provides
innumerous community trainings all throughout Orange County.
Janet has devoted seven years of service to developing our
Interfaith Program, providing a spiritual connection at various
houses of worship for more than 2,000 individuals with
dementia and their caregivers.
If you have a couple hours to give once a week or just
once in a while, call Gina Henexson, Volunteer
Coordinator, at 949.757.3710. Or visit our website at
www.alzoc.org to view current opportunities.
