Whilst Grandpa was busy with Richmond Hill Auto Top, our Nanny stayed at home taking care of all the important things that a house required to be called a home. She was very supportive of her husband; our grandfather, and did a great job of raising their three children in a very loving environment. She was also an incredible baker. Nanny & Grandpa Grandpa inspecting the progress on an upholstery job (Below). Richmond Hill Auto Top, 135-11 Hillside Ave. c.1950. PAGE 4 Grandpa Yudt (L) & his brother Ferdinand (R) (WE called him Vati Onkel, meaning Daddy Uncle in English), custom trimming a new convertible top. They both had a great reputation for quality craftsmanship and a kind demeanor (Above). Our Mom recalls, when she was younger; about 10, she would ride her bicycle to Grandpa's shop to bring him Nanny's homemade lunch. It was a 4 mile ride and she rode it quite often... ok, so this isn't Mom at age 10; nor is it the bike she was riding, but it's the only picture we had of Mom on a bike (Below). Grandpa had a new building erected in 1948 capable of handling the expansion of Richmond Hill Auto Top. He had 12 trimmers working for him, two of which were his brother Ferdinand and son-in-law, our Dad, Fred. Later Moms brother Henry went to work for Grandpa and ran Richmond Hill Auto Top up until his retirement in 2001. Our Dad, Fred (L), Grandpa Yudt (2nd from left), and Grandpa’s Brother Ferdinand Yudt (9th from Left).

Like most family run business’, the past generation continued to lend moral support and share their knowledge even after retirement. Grandpa would occasionally stop in and see how things were going (Below). Our Dad was the fi rst president of the Automotive Trimmers Association of New York. Back in the 50’s there were “Trimorama” competitions and our Dad won 2nd place with the seats pictured to the right. PAGE 5 Grandpa Yudt was a wonderful man whose kind heart was exposed on a regular basis. He was a true gentleman and a person who loved to laugh, tease and sing. He kept a little black book in his drawer that he would write jokes in and keep the grandchildren entertained with the many puns held in its interior. His days as an apprentice in Yugoslavia were long gone, but the conviction he gained for honesty and integrity stayed with him till his passing in 1986. “Second Generation; Our Dad, Fred“ Grandpa & Dad c.1951 Dads real father died when our eldest sister Linda was very young. Grandpa Yudt treated our Dad like his own son.
