IN THE SPOTLIGHT...
DETECTIVE RANDALL “RANDY” RAY
Randall “Randy” Ray
has always wanted to be in
law enforcement. He
entered the Northeast
Alabama Law
Enforcement Academy
after graduating from
Hewitt-Trussville and
from there began work
with the Bessemer Police
Department where he
worked on patrol, in vice
and narcotics, SWAT and
as a motorcycle policeman.
He continued his education
at Jefferson State
Community College,
Jacksonville State and ultimately
graduated from
Columbia Southern
University with a bachelor
of science in criminal justice.
Two and a half years
ago he joined the Alabaster
Police Department where

he works as a detective.
Detective Ray usually
works eight to five unless
he is working on something
he feels the need to finish
up, and is on call every fifth
week twenty-four hours a
day. Crimes in Alabaster
generally involve burglaries,
theft of property or identity
theft. Randy states that
2011 was very unusual as
the department dealt with
four murders.
Randy’s job satisfaction
comes from knowing he has
helped someone or that he
has assisted getting someone
back on the right track.
He had just notified an
eleven year old girl that her
purse had been recovered.
Randy emphasizes the
good leadership and the
team work that go on in the

department. He states that
the ten people in the
Criminal Investigations
Department work together
as family, all striving for the
same goal. Randy, who
does not hesitate to say he
is Christian and attends
Church of the Highlands,
says he believes that it was
God’s plan that he be in law
enforcement.
When asks how real-life
detective work compares
with what is seen on television,
Randy responds,
“Television has it 40 to 60
percent correct. You cannot
tell what a person is made
of by just riding around, listening
to the commentary.
The way to know a person
is to get in a tight spot with
that individual and see the
response to a crisis situation.”
Detective Randy Ray works for
the Alabaster Police Dept.
Katy, Randy’s wife, is
very supportive of his work
as she comes from a law
enforcement family. Her
grandfather is Jessie
Sprayberry, who retired from
the Birmingham Police
Department and then became
Police Chief of Tarrant.
When not tracking down
criminals or appearing in
court, Randy focuses on his
sons, Brandon, thirteen, and
Tyler, one. As time permits,
Randy will occasionally slip
off to Lay Lake to wet a line
and maybe catch a fish or
two.
