TMS PHOTO CONTEST RAISES FUNDS
The Thompson
Middle School PTO recently
sponsored a photography
contest to help raise
funds for additional classroom
supplies for the
school. According to Sybil
Owens, vice president of
the PTO, the contest was
open to all Thompson
Middle School students.
The money raised from
the contest was applied
toward five different
teacher grants that the
PTO awarded to TMS
teachers in April. The
theme for the photography
contest was animals.
“The kids could enter a
picture of an animal, be it
a pet or something they
saw out in the wild or
wherever,” said Owens.
Contestants had to pay
a $5 entry fee, and then
once the pictures were
submitted and accepted,
students at the school were
able to “vote” on their

with each photo.
“We had the kids do a
penny vote,” said Owens.
“We had a penny jar, and
the picture that had the
most money won.”
Owens said this was the
first time they’d held the
contest. The idea for the
fundraiser arose during
one of their brainstorming
sessions.
“We were just in a PTO
meeting, kind of brainstorming,
and one of the
assistant principals said it
was something they did at
one of his kids’ schools, so
we decided to transfer it to
ours,” said Owens.
Owens said she expects
participation to grow in the
future as the students better
understand the process
for the contest.
“We feel that next year
we can do a couple of
things different to create a

bigger event. We also feel
like the kids have a better
understanding of the
event, and we will have a
higher participation level
next year,” said Owens.
According to Owens,
the money raised from the
contest was used to help
fund grants for TMS teachers.
The grants were used
to purchase a variety of
classroom supplies,
including an updated
Atlas, new woodshop
materials, and audio
books. The PTO was also
able to donate $200 toward
the purchase of a new
ELMO system, which is a
state-of-the-art projection
system that’s very beneficial
in the classroom.
Throughout the school
year, the PTO conducted a
number of different
fundraisers, like a back-toschool
dance and T-shirt
sales.

The winners of this
year’s photography contest
were Shai Hunter (first
place), Jennifer Tancredi
(second place), and Austin
Owens (third place). The
three winners received
Wal-Mart gift cards donated
by Kena Perkins of
Keller Williams Realty.
