ALAGASCO SEMINAR JUNE 18<br />
Alagasco is <strong>of</strong>fering a<br />
free seminar covering<br />
changes to the new fuel gas<br />
code requirements and<br />
other related issues. The<br />
class will take place<br />
Monday, <strong>June</strong> 18, from 1<br />
p.m. to 4 p.m., at the<br />
<strong>Alabaster</strong> Senior Center.<br />
“They approached me<br />
about a year ago about<br />
doing some code changes<br />
classes,” said <strong>Alabaster</strong><br />
Building Inspector Glen<br />
Merchant. “Mr. Reggie<br />
Johnson, with Alagasco,<br />
has <strong>of</strong>fered to teach this<br />
class for free.”<br />
According to Merchant,<br />
the class will benefit those<br />
within the <strong>City</strong>’s Planning<br />
and Zoning Department.<br />
The seminar will allow<br />
them to earn CEU credits,<br />
which are required to<br />
maintain proper certification.<br />
“Most <strong>of</strong> our guys and<br />
the city engineer can benefit<br />
from the class,” said<br />
Merchant. “You have to<br />
have so much training to say<br />
that you’re up to date. You<br />
have to keep learning stuff<br />
all the time.”<br />
Merchant said he expects<br />
inspectors from neighboring<br />
communities to attend the<br />
seminar as well.<br />
“We hope to have<br />
between 30 and 50 participants,”<br />
said Merchant. “I<br />
have inspectors from all over<br />
the Birmingham area that are<br />
interested.”<br />
Others interested in the<br />
class may include vendors<br />
and contractors.<br />
“Vendors that sell gas<br />
appliances, gas fittings,<br />
they’re going to come<br />
because they need to know<br />
the current changes in standards,”<br />
said Merchant.<br />
“HVAC contractors in the<br />
State <strong>of</strong> Alabama, they have<br />
to get so many CEUs per<br />
year to keep their heating<br />
and air license. So a lot <strong>of</strong><br />
those guys want to come and<br />
get CEU credit hours.”<br />
