For shoppers in
search of an eclectic
assortment of items,
at very affordable
prices, the Royal
Market in Alabaster
may be just the place.
Located conveniently
in Elliotsville Plaza
(beside Kumon Math
and Learning Center),
the Royal Market specializes
in unique
consignment items,
like home accessories,
clothing, and furniture.
“We carry one-ofa-kind
items, like homemade
soaps and candles,”
said Lacy Cost, who owns
the store with her husband
Al. “We carry all kinds of
stuff.”
Since the Royal Market
first opened in March of
2011, it’s already grown
enough to expand twice.
In fact, it just recently
expanded into a second
part of the retail center.
“We started with 1,400
square feet,” said Lacy
Cost. “We went to 5,000
and then to 7,000. We were
two doors down when we
started.”
In addition to selling
items on consignment, the
store also rents out booths
to vendors who set up
their own merchandise
inside the store.

“A booth is like a small
store of an individual. They
rent the space, and they
bring in their own inventory,”
said Lacy. “It’s like
having your own little
small store, inside of another
store.”
Each booth renter is able
to set up their own space
within the store in their
own unique style, which
means one section might
carry antique bottles while
another might specialize in
woodwork. Some renters
will even track what’s selling
to help them figure out
what inventory to stock.
“One guy will come in
and say, what’s selling?
Ashtrays? Lighters?” said
Al Cost. “So when they go
to auctions and stuff, they’ll
go out and buy those items
and bring them in.”

The couple also
sells some of their
own unique inventory,
which they
find in various
places around the
South.
“We’re pickers,”
said Al. “We’re usually
picking on the
weekend.”
With the nation’s
economy still sluggish,
customers are
always eager to
save, and the Royal
Market certainly
helps with that
effort.
“She keeps the prices
affordable for the customers,”
said Al. “There
are antiques in here, but
you’re not paying antique
prices for them.”
For residents who might
be interested in renting a
booth at the Royal Market,
Al said they currently have
limited booth space available.
“We’re limited in what
we’re going to rent out as
booth space, but we’re taking
consigners in all the
time,” said Al.
The Royal Market is
open five days a week,
Tuesday through Saturday.
