Comes to 

Brooklyn

The Royal Australian Navy Band 

Sydney Detachment will perform 

at Brooklyn Oval Park from 11am on 

Sunday 15 April 2012. 

The band will then join in with 

RSL members at 11:30am for the 

unveiling and dedication to all wars 

of the newly restored War Memorial. 

“We invite the public to join us in this 

community event and we welcome

NEW RECRUITS for Kuring Gai Local Area 

Command 

Two new police officers are expected to be allocated to Kuring gai Local 

Area Command at the Goulburn NSW Police Academy in May. 

After graduation the probationary constables will complete 12 months 

on-the-job training and also study by distance education with Charles 

Sturt University before they officially graduate with a Diploma in Policing 

Practice. Once they graduate, the officers will then be confirmed in the 

rank of Constable. 

“I am proud and pleased to be welcoming these new police officers to our 

ranks,” said Kuring Gai Local Area Commander, Superintendent Philippi. 

“From day one, they will assist their fellow officers in reducing criminal 

activity and providing grass-roots solutions to local issues.” 

A total of seventy-five new officers have been assigned to the Region to 

assist in driving down crime and helping to provide local solutions to local 

problems.

The Heritage Museum Areas will 

be open including the historic 1901 

Netherby Cottage. There will be a 

display of Trucks, Tractors, Stationery 

Engines including a Steam Engine, a 

Road Roller, Horse-drawn Sulkies, a 

display of Hand Tools, and restored 

Farm Machinery to see. 

A Blacksmith will also be working 

throughout the day! 

At noon there will be a parade around 

the Park of restored Trucks and 

Tractors. 

There will be lots to see and do for all 

the family. Particularly popular with the 

children is the old gramophone and 

‘working’ ice chest in the Homestead, 

the ‘hands on’ clothes wringer in the 

laundry and the monkey tail water 

pump. Don’t miss it! 

Tea, coffee and soft drinks will be 

available provided by the Friends of 

Fagan Park at a modest charge. 

All the park facilities such as Picnic 

Areas, Barbecues, Gardens, 

Children’s Playground and Walking Trails will be available.

Cultural Festival 

I am, You are, We are Australian.

Well … I survived St Patrick’s Day 

on Saturday17 March 2012 and 

was contemplating going to the St 

Patrick’s Parade the following day, 

Sunday. A quick check of my diary 

however revealed that Sunday 

18 th was also our local ‘One World 

Multicultural Festival’ in the Hornsby 

Florence Street Mall. 

I decided to support the local 

festival before I traveled to 

Wentworthville for a late arvo 

‘Sunday Folk’ BBQ with some 

musicians, entertainers and friends. 

I decided to wear my Ned Kelly gear 

complete with a black plastic bucket 

helmet and a humorous quirky 

placard showing ‘Ned Kelly for PM’ 

(Prime Minister). 

On arrival at the festival in the Mall 

was a buzzin’ as families engaged 

in the various activities among 

the stalls and enjoyed the many 

acts on centre stage including 

displays of song, music and dance, 

from various ethnic / cultural 

backgrounds. 

I looked out for my fellow musician 

friends Nina Kharakoz (accordion) 

and ‘Yuri Gagarin’ (guitar) both 

from Mt Colah who would be there, 

along with others, to entertain the 

crowd with some Russian folk 

music. 

When I went backstage to enquire 

if ‘the Russians’ had performed as 

yet, I was told by two ‘officials’ that 

they didn’t have time to answer my 

question and to go away! This was 

my first unfriendly upset of the day. 

Unfortunately more was to come. 

I then visited the NSW Police stand 

with Sgt Debbie Birmingham, 

assisted by volunteer Elain Rao 

(Hornsby) and Fiona Zhou. Fiona is 

the Multicultural Community Liaison 

Officer at Hornsby Police Station 

and was a finalist in the NSW 

‘Woman of the Year Award’ in 2011. 

I also met up with Corporal Ian 

Marshall (from Hornsby) who 

was there with Deb Moorhouse 

(Hornsby) and Tammy Seow 

(Cherrybrook), all volunteers with

the St John Ambulance. 

Mayor Nick Berman was at the 

festival, and also Hornsby Shire 

Councillor Dilip Chopra (Pennant 

Hills) who was escorting the 

‘Festival Ambassador for the Day’, 

Jenny Tew of Cabramatta. Jenny 

was appointed by the Federal 

Government in Feb this year as a 

‘People of Australia Ambassador’. 

“There are 246 different 

nationalities living in 

Australia and with 206 

languages,” said the 

Ambassador. 

I found this statement a little odd 

as I thought we were all ‘One 

Australian Nationality’ with family 

roots going back to many parts 

of the world. Maybe it was just a 

language/culture misunderstanding 

or are we both really of a different 

mind-set? 

When I talked with her about some 

of the problems and issues in 

Australia, the Ambassador’s reply 

was that Australia was not corrupt 

like some Asian countries and that 

I can always go there or to another 

country. 

Well that was my second unfriendly 

upset of the day, and what a beauty 

eh! 

Maybe ‘Ned Kelly’ should have 

stayed at home that day. 

The day however was a great 

success and congratulations must 

go to Hornsby Shire Council for 

organizing the event, and also to 

the many volunteers. 

It’s a pity though that at this One

there was no entertainment 

depicting the traditional folk heritage 

culture of Australia! 

It is important that we do not 

exclude our Aussie culture and 

that it becomes inclusive in these 

events. 

I at least had some relief in the fact 

that I had arrived at the Hornsby 

Mall in my Ned Kelly outfit to 

connect our past Aussie Irish folk 

history with the present growing 

multi-cultures. 

Let it be known to all that if 

there are any more such cultural 

events in the future by Hornsby 

Shire Council or others then I 

hereby offer my services as an 

‘Aussie Ambassador’! This also 

includes Australia Day, citizenship 

ceremonies, and any special 

occasion requiring a touch of 

traditional OZ culture. 

I reflect on the words of the song 

‘We are Australian’ written in 

1987 by Bruce Woodley of ‘The 

Seekers’ and Dobe Newton of ‘The 

Bushwackers’. 

We are one, but we are many, and 

from all the lands on earth we 

come. 

We share a dream, and sing with 

one voice. I am, you are, we are 

Australian.

FUNDRAISER ... WITH A TWIST 

Local Lads Challenge Each Other to help Orphaned Kids 

For the last year, Berowra lads Isaac Owen and Nathan Claypole have 

been double-daring each other to do a variety of interesting tasks. 

They’ve shaved their heads, drunk blended Happy Meals and 

gone skydiving … to name a few! 

All these challenges have gone 

onto their youtube channel, 

“Match me if you can”. 

Bush Tele Readers may have 

even noticed them once when 

the lads were shopping as 

‘cross-dressers’ at a local Coles 

supermarket! 

Recently, the best mates 

travelled together to visit an 

orphanage in India, in the town 

of Devanahalli. Inspired by the 

work done in such poor areas, 

Isaac decided he wanted to 

contribute. 

Isacc’s next dare is somewhat 

different to what’s been happening 

thus far: 

Isaac has decided to run a fundraiser for the Indian Orphanage. 

Whatever amount of money Isaac is able to raise for the Orphanage, 

Nathan has been challenged to raise also! 

Isaac’s fundraiser is entitled “Trivia, with a Twist”, and is being hosted at 

Thornleigh Community Baptist Church on the 28th of April. 

To support his cause, Isaac has gathered notable community celebrities to 

help with the function. Some of them include: World champion windsurfer 

and record holder Allison Shreeve, MP for Hornsby Matt Kean, Sparkles 

the Fairy Laura Murphy and many more! 

Isaac hopes to raise around $10,000 for education for the children, 

and welcomes Bush Tele Readers to come to TRIVIA WITH A TWIST

Many investors embarking on 

leasing out their first rental 

property hold out for the higher 

rent possibly before letting the 

property, thinking the sky is 

the limit in a competitive rental 

market. Many do this even if this 

means losing several weeks rent. 

What does this mean for their 

overall return on the property? 

The best way to maximise the 

return on investment properties is 

to keep the property let – in other 

words to minimise vacancy. But 

it is not always easy to decide to 

lower the rent. It is tempting to 

hold out for “just another week”

shows that holding out for a high 

rent is counter-productive; if the 

property is never going to let for 

$400 a week anyway, losing $350 

for even two weeks is $700 that, 

spread over one year, will lessen 

the overall weekly return to less 

than the $350 the property will 

actually eventually be leased for. 

Furthermore, tenants talk to other 

people in the rental market and 

those paying top dollar are the 

first to notice a downturn in the 

rental markets, often reacting by 

moving out to a cheaper property 

when their lease expires – further 

opportunity for vacancy while the 

landlord chooses again to go for top 

rent before accepting the changed 

circumstances. Higher turnover 

of dissatisfied tenants is a further 

opportunity for lost income. 

Experienced property investors

asking for 95% of market value, 

thus avoiding tenants moving to 

greener pastures when the rental 

market slows down. And when 

they do have a vacancy, they work 

by the rules that (provided the 

property is clean and presents well 

and is well-maintained) if a tenant

campaign days, the asking rent 

should be reduced by ten percent. 

This takes the agony out of the 

decision, enabling the property 

owner to distance themselves from 

the process by working to a tried 

and tested system.

Dear BT, 

I fully support those seeking to minimise the 

offence caused to non-Christians by using 

generic terms like “happy holidays” on public 

school sign boards (TBTW 15/3). 

However there are other minority groups in our 

community whose views have been overlooked 

and a few minor alterations would make this a 

better more caring world. 

Currently shops selling meat and its products 

display the heart-stoppingly brutal term “Butcher”. 

This phrase surely does not sit well with 

vegetarians. 

Likewise who doesn’t feel a dose of sorrow 

for those who are bald-headed having to see 

the term “Hairdresser” boldly displayed on 

shopfronts? 

On a personal level, I reach for the tissues 

whenever I see the term “Bottleshop” displayed 

with nary a care for my sensibilities. Don’t they 

realise the misery this causes to people like me 

who prefer their beer from cans?

Dear BT, 

It was a pleasure (and relief) to witness Hornsby 

Police finally catch some of the hoons, which 

have been a significant disturbance to the 

residents of our community. 

For years, our neighbourhood has been impacted 

by these idiots & their reckless driving. Late on 

Thursday evening (Thursday 22nd March), my 

partner and I were lying in bed listening to the 

screeching & noise coming from the Salisbury 

Road precinct. A short time later, a police siren… 

Hooray! We can only hope these inconsiderate & 

dangerous drivers have the full weight of the law 

thrown their way! 

So, we’d like to convey our gratitude and 

congratulations to the members of Hornsby 

Police – hopefully you can get more of these 

fools off our roads!!

The meaning of the house named “WHARE 

PAKEHA”: During the 1940’s when staying 

at “Eureka” Alan Road, Berowra, I heard my 

grandparents talking about “Wally Parker” a guy who 

grew flowers commercially and lived just beyond 

“Wittianga” in Turner Road, Berowra. 

Years later I realised it was the house with similar 

pronunciation instead built by CJ Turner in 1908 and 

stood until demolished where the Medical Centre is 

in Turner Road.The only reason to date I can guess 

is that my grandmother, Violet, his daughter, had just 

returned from New Zealand and it is Maori for “White 

Man’s House”.

I am concerned about the positioning of 

the white planter box (see photo above) 

in the Mt Kuring-gai Shopping Centre 

which is accessible to small children 

who climb up onto the brickwork of the 

main red brick planter box which has a 

long drop onto concrete on the Pacific 

Highway side of the box. 

Can something be done urgently about 

this to avoid a tragedy?

Credit should be given to the NSW 

Government for reviewing the actions of 

the Valuer-General. 

Unfortunately the compulsory acquisition 

of the quarry, that was forced on 

Hornsby Council and its ratepayers, was 

not an isolated incident and affected 

many other Councils. 

Local residents had every reason for 

being disappointed in the lack of support 

given by State Members of Parliament in 

2006 to amendments to the compulsory 

acquisition legislation which has since 

prevented a repeat. 

The work now being done by the 

parliamentary committee overseeing the 

work of the office of the Valuer General 

may well go a long way to consolidating 

the improvements that have been made 

as well as addressing other concerns.

Dear BT, 

‘Anthony’s Mum’ TBTW 15/3 has a 

confused position on the NSW schools 

ethics program. 

The Ethics program has not replaced 

school Scripture classes. Scripture 

operates on a ‘opt out’ basis meaning 

everyone attends unless their parents 

have provided written confirmation that 

they do not wish their child to attend. 

The Ethics program does not replace 

scripture. Furthermore, scripture is not 

Christian. It can be any religion. 

Australia is not a Christian nation. It 

is a secular democracy that operates 

independently of religion. 

Perhaps if ‘Anthonys Mum’ wasn’t so 

far from being a ‘bible basher’ she 

would understand there is a lot more to 

‘christian values’ than eating Christmas 

ham and singing carols. 

Whilst not a parent myself, I am shocked 

that any parent expects the school or a 

religion to teach their child the basics of 

what is right and wrong. Surely that is the 

job of the parents themselves?

Berowra RSL Club STALWART 

awarded Life Membership 

After years of service to Berowra 

RSL Club, outgoing Club Vice 

President Ross Foster, was 

atypically speechless at the Annual 

General Meeting on Sunday March 

25th, when instead of the quiet 

retirement he had expected, he was 

awarded a Life Membership and a 

farewell lunch. 

Club regulars will attest to Ross’s 

persuasiveness, drive and cando 

attitude, which have all been 

evident since he joined the Club in 

1970. Some of the many services 

Ross has rendered include assisting 

the Club’s transition from being 

under administration in the early 

2000’s to being an ongoing concern 

and filling the position of Club Vice 

President since 2005. 

Ross has left a visual legacy in the 

form of two outdoor decks, including 

the recently completed (and now 

open) upstairs deck. Ross was 

Project Manager who spent a lot of 

time arranging the work, materials 

and labour, then supervising the 

construction. When needed, he 

stepped in and wielded a broom 

or paintbrush too! Despite many 

impediments, Ross pushed these 

projects through in a timely manner 

and with huge cost savings to the 

Club. 

He has spent a lot of time over 

the years sharing his business 

skills and ideas with the Club 

management and Board, consulting 

and assisting in reorganising and 

improving the Club’s layout and 

appearance. 

Life Membership can be awarded 

to a person who has rendered 

outstanding service. Ross has 

contributed outstanding service for 

over 40 years and his efforts have 

greatly assisted in making the Club 

what it is today.

Jam Night!!! 

Live community music—real music, not karaoke!—will be the focus of 

attention at Berowra RSL on the first and third Thursday of each month 

when highly respected musician and popular local resident Steve 

Passfield launches a new season of Jam Nights on Thursday, April 5. 

“It’s not just a new season but a new Jam Night venue, and everyone is 

welcome to join in, whether they’re seasoned musicians, aspiring amateurs, 

budding songwriters or just there to listen and have a great time,” said Steve, 

whose latest album, Soundtrack of My Life, was released this month. 

According to Steve, the Jam Night is one of the ways he likes to mix his love 

of music and performing live with his passion for being involved in the local 

community. Among the community projects and programmes he supports, for 

example, is Hornsby’s Studio Artes North Side (http://www.youtube.com/watch 

?v=k60LNQj5eII&feature=related). 

“The jam night is very much a community event,” said Steve. “It’s for people to 

share and enjoy music and perhaps discover or develop musical abilities they 

may not be fully aware they have.” 

It’s often also an opportunity for locals to enjoy performances by established 

artists when they’re available to join in the fun. 

“Some unknown bands that have joined us on a Jam Night have gone on to 

get more gigs as a result,” said Steve. “If you’re willing to have a go and join in 

the fun, you never know where it might lead!”

I have never seen one 

before and I was a bit surprised 

when I did. I was driving along 

the freeway when I happened to 

look up and there it was…just for 

a moment…a brilliant flash of 

trailing light which quickly faded 

as the small meteorite burnt out 

just before it reached the ground. 

It only lasted for a couple of seconds 

and it was quite spectacular but the 

problem was that it did not reach its 

destination: It had travelled for untold 

thousand kilometres and it burnt out 

within 100m of reaching the earth. 

I checked out a few facts about 

meteorites and I was surprised to 

find that approximately 84,000 

meteorites hit the earth every year. 

These meteorites are between 10g 

and 1kg. Doing a little mathematics 

showed me that approximately 230 of 

the flaming objects hit the earth every 

day and when I realised that, I was 

now surprised that I had ever seen 

one at all! 

There are many different ways of living 

your life: some people are quiet and 

careful, not tending to draw much 

attention to themselves; others live 

‘fast and furious’ almost explosive 

in their actions and decisions. But 

whether you are quiet or loud, 

whether you are careful or impetuous, 

we are all on a journey. 

How you travel on that journey is up 

to you. You can allow yourself to 

wander aimlessly and achieve little or 

insignificant ends or you can allow 

a force far greater than yourself to 

propel you to a valuable target and 

purpose – just like the gravitational 

field of the earth draws meteors to 

itself. 

Our journey is destined to take us 

a long way and we are meant to be 

alight with a spectacular radiance on 

display for others to see as we travel. 

The Lord “ makes His angels spirits, 

His ministers a flame of fire.”

It would be a great shame if we burnt 

out just shy of the target set for us or 

if we failed to reach our God-given 

potential.

World Down Syndrome Day 

At an afternoon tea organised by Clarke Road School Hornsby for 

World Down Syndrome Day, Matt Kean MP gained an understanding 

of the various issues that affect people with this disability. 

According to Down Syndrome NSW, a not-for-profit organisation, Down 

Syndrome is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21 inside each of 

the body’s cells and affects one in approximately 860 babies throughout 

the world. 

‘The Day is about raising awareness and recognising the opportunities 

available to people with Down Syndrome,’ Mr Kean said. ‘Despite having a 

disability, people with Down Syndrome contribute to our society meaningfully.’ 

Having Down Syndrome doesn’t affect your ability to live independently, gain 

employment or participate in recreational activities. 

Matt Kean said, ‘After speaking with some of the students and the dedicated 

staff at this school, I have a greater understanding of the challenges facing 

people with Down Syndrome and the work that must be done by both the 

community and government in order to address them.’

AS HORNSBY COUNCIL APPROVES RECREATION 

FACILITY AT OLD MANS VALLEY 

The president of the local mountain bike club, Sydney North Off Road 

Cyclists (SNORC), Campbell King, has welcomed Hornsby Council’s 

adoption of the Old Mans Valley Community Land Draft Plan of 

Management (PoM) in this week’s ordinary council meeting from 21 

March 2012. 

The PoM will recategorise the land in Old Mans Valley near Hornsby 

Quarry according to the legislation changes of the Local Government 

Act 1993. Key future uses of OMV include a mountain bike trail, 

retention of existing bushland and watercourses, recreation facilities 

with playground, entry building and café as well as a sportsground with 

amenities building. 

“We are excited that we will soon be able to ride our mountain bikes 

on sustainable trails so close to home”, Mr Campbell said. The local 

SNORC (Sydney North Off Road Cyclists) mountain bike club, which 

has more than 600 cyclists among their followers, had assisted groups 

of professional landscape architects and trail designers over 4 years 

to help Council create plans for recreational facilities, walking and 

mountain bike trails at Old Mans Valley. Also a clean-up initiative was 

held during which more than 20 cubic metres of rubbish were removed 

from Hornsby Park. 

Mr King, who attended the Council Meeting with representatives of his 

club, added that there had been some confusion during the discussions 

about the area on the south side of Quarry Rd when the evening really 

was supposed to be about the PoM of Old Mans Valley. 

Residents from Dural Street had brought up concerns about the vicinity of 

their properties to Old Mans Valley.

Berowra Tennis 

Courts...what the 

future holds... 

In late 2011 Hornsby Council called for tenders for the 

operation of several tennis centres in the Shire whose leases 

had expired. The tenders were evaluated and in the case of 

the Boundary Rd, Berowra tennis courts, Council resolved to 

accept the tender from the Hornsby Kuring-gai District Tennis 

Association. 

The Berowra Tennis Club will continue to operate the courts on 

a month by month basis until the new leases are prepared and 

signed. According to Council, this will take several months. 

As Hornsby Kuring-gai Tennis District Association is now managing 

the courts, they will decide on hire fees. 

“I am confident that the Hornsby Kuring-gai District Tennis 

Association will operate the tennis centre in a professional manner 

that will ensure the growth of tennis and meet the needs of tennis 

players of all ages in Berowra,” said Nick Berman, Mayor. 

The netball courts (former tennis courts) in Berowra Waters 

Road is scheduled to have its conversion work completed by 

29 March, subject to weather.

Hornsby Council Healthy Living Festival and Youth Week 

Pack your gardening gloves and a hat and come and join 

Easy Care Gardening for a hands-on experience, creating 

an easy-care garden. Learn how to create your own easycare 

garden, as you join our friendly volunteers and make a 

difference in the community. Enjoy morning or afternoon 

tea with us, while you chat to our volunteers and hear 

about their experiences. 

Easy Care Gardening is a charitable gardening service for 

the frail aged and people with a disability on a pension in 

the Ku-ring-gai, Hornsby, Ryde and Hunters Hill areas. 

Teams of volunteer gardeners weed, prune, mulch and 

make gardens safe and tidy and “easy care” so that frail aged 

and disabled clients are able to remain in their own homes. 

New volunteers are always sought to meet an increasing 

demand from an ageing population. Our volunteer teams 

go out six days a week, so if you are looking for a Saturday 

volunteering opportunity out in the fresh air, we’d love to 

hear from you. 

The Open Gardening Day will take place on 10 April, with 

a morning session running from 9am and an afternoon 

session running from 1pm. Each session will run for about 

2½ hours in Pennant Hills, within walking distance of the 

station.
