The Mission of Washington County Health System is to be the most 

effective provider of health services in our service area through 

• Leadership and responsiveness to our community's healthcare needs, 

• Accessibility of those services in partnership with our extended 

community, 

• The high level of respect we afford our patients, physicians, 

customers, and employees 

Our Vision 

The Washington County Health System will succeed in accomplishing its 

mission of ensuring it is the community's preeminent quality healthcare 

provider via a five-part strategy This strategy includes 

• Creating and enhancing regional healthcare through an integrated 

delivery system, 

• Forming a framework of partnerships and affiliations, 

• Establishing centers of excellence in partnership with the medical 

community, 

• Providing excellent health education in cooperation with appropriate 

institutions, and, 

• Developing a health plan that assures a holistic approach to medical 

issues and coverage.

“Through our personal experiences with families, friends, and 

colleagues, the members of the Washington County Health System 

Board of Directors have a deep understanding of our community’s 

healthcare needs. That understanding helps us in developing 

collaborative efforts that meet medical care needs efficiently and 

effectively. This past year, we dedicated the H. W. Murphy 

Community Health Center at Walnut Street which houses the 

Western Maryland Medbank and Healthy Families of Washington 

County. These are two outstanding examples of partnerships that 

have expanded healthcare services in our community. In the years 

ahead, we will continue in our commitment to offering medical care 

programs that are tailored to those who call this region home.”

A message from the president and CEO 

Dear Neighbor, 

As you review the past year, I think that you will be impressed with 

Washington County Health System's service to our community. At Washington 

County Hospital, we have cared for 17,608 inpatients and more than 53,000 

patients in our emergency department. At Robinwood Medical Center, the John 

R. Marsh Cancer Center had more than 17,000 patient visits while Diagnostic 

Imaging Services had 70,000 visits. We have established new healthcare services 

in our community such as the Maryland NeuroRehab Foundation and a new 

corporate wellness program. We received full accreditation by the Joint 

Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. In addition, we 

were named as a 100 Top Community Hospital: Benchmarks For Success by 

Solucient-Washington County Hospital was the only hospital in the State of Maryland to receive this recognition. 

While we take pride in our accomplishments, they are not the real story at Washington County Health 

System. The real story is in the care that our employees give to others because they want to lessen the struggle 

people face when they are sick. 

Our 2,800 employees make a difference in the lives of those who depend on us every day of the year. They 

make a difference not only in their professional capacities as nurses, physicians, technologists, volunteers, or 

other staff, but also as your family member or friend. They join you in your faith-based community, in your civic 

organization, in your child's school activities, and in your recreational pursuits. Together, we share a communal 

bond that helps us understand your needs. 

These compassionate people are devoted to excellence in medical care. Working one-to-one, they offer 

healing and hope to patients and their families. On the pages that follow, you will see their concern reflected in 

photos from around the health system and in quotes from patients who appreciated their care. 

We feel privileged to provide your healthcare. Your trust encourages us to push forward in our commitment 

to meeting the medical care needs of our community. During the summer of 2002, we will open the third 

section of Robinwood Medical Center. It will include an expanded women's health center and an new urgent 

care center among other services.
