retires after 31 years 

It was the fall of 1973 when 

Duwane Miller arrived at KMC to 

teach drafting. The welcome 

letter that he received from 

Charles Wyss provided a list of his 

colleagues from other 

departments, people like Sr. 

Renee (English), Sister Constance 

(Music), Mr. Koftan (Math), Mrs. 

Cress (Business) and Sister James 

Paul in the Library. Long after 

each of these fine people have left 

the halls of KMC, Mr. Miller 

continued teaching until his final 

regular class period on Monday, 

May 24, 2004. 

A celebration of his contributions 

to KMC was held on May 24, 2004 

in the KMC Media Center. Many 

of his former students and 

athletes came to wish him the 

best as he left KMC. 

Coach Miller, thank you for all the 

time that you spent mentoring, 

coaching, teaching and instilling 

values in the students at KMC. 

You will be missed.

As most of you know by now, or at least would recognize, 

our mission statement at Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High 

School is "to educate and form the total person in the image 

of Jesus Christ." In order to achieve our mission, we need 

to have adequate resources available, and we must 

effectively utilize those resources. 

Our most valuable resource is the dedicated staff of people 

who have internalized our mission - our faculty, 

administration and support staff. It is our faculty members 

who have the most direct impact on the students whom 

we are dedicated to serve, and I would like to focus on our 

faculty in this article. 

Our faculty is composed of 52 full-time and 6 part-time 

teachers, including two diocesan priests. 45% of our 

classroom teachers have Masters or Specialist degrees, 

and more than 70% of them are Catholic. They have been 

teaching at KMC for an average of 7 years, and 11years in 

total. 

A number of our current faculty members are probably 

remembered by many of our alumni. Those teachers who 

have dedicated at least ten years to teaching in the Catholic 

Diocese of Wichita are:

Duwane Miller just retired this spring after teaching and/or 

coaching at KMC for 31 years. And, Rod Browning – Activities 

Director and Head Girls Basketball coach, Liana Torkelson – 

Guidance Counselor, and Shirley Sharma – Media Specialist have 

all invested more than 15 years each in Diocesan educational 

positions.

Dear Parents and Other Friends of 

Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School, 

I am proud to inform you that our Director of Development, 

Mike Wescott, has been named Diocesan Director of Development 

and Planned Giving. He will begin his new responsibilities 

at the Chancery Office on August 1. In the 

meantime, he will be working with me to find his replacement 

at KMC, and to help ensure a smooth transition for 

our new Director of Development, while continuing to oversee 

day-to-day operations of the Development Office downtown. 

He has also committed to spend significant time at 

the school during the first few weeks that his replacement 

is on the job. 

Mike’s many contributions to the recent resurgence in the 

stature and success of Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High 

School are too numerous to list. Though he did not graduate 

from KMC, he truly has the heart of a Crusader. He has 

been a wonderful ambassador in working with our students, 

faculty, parents, alumni and other friends of the 

school. There is no one who has internalized more deeply 

our mission “to educate and form the total person in the 

image of Jesus Christ” than Mike has, and his dedication 

has been contagious. 

We will miss Mike – his smile, laughter, dedication, leadership, 

effectiveness, friendship and his Catholicity. 

Please join me in congratulating Mike, in wishing him well, 

and in discouraging him from becoming a stranger at KMC.

2003-04 Highlights of 

Accomplishments 

• Two KMC alums, Ben Shockey '88 and David Marstall '96 

were ordained to the priesthood on May 29. 

• Our Science Olympiad team won the state championship 

for the 2nd consecutive year and for the 3rd time in the past 

four years, and placed 17th in the nation. 

• Several of our students received high recognition at state 

music competition, and our drama and music departments 

performed numerous, outstanding plays and concerts. 

• Our Journalism program won its ninth state championship 

in the past ten years, and numerous prestigious national 

and state awards, as well. 

• There were numerous successes on the athletic fields, 

highlighted by: 

• City League championships in girls golf, cross country, 

track and soccer; 

• State championships in girls cross country and boys golf, 

along with various other teams advancing to state 

competition; 

• Numerous students winning recognition on All City and 

All State teams, or placing in individual events at state 

competitions. 

• Our senior class had four National Merit Finalists and two 

National Merit Commended Scholars. Seven of our seniors 

applied to and were accepted by the University of Notre 

Dame, and six of them will be attending there this fall. 

• 94% of this year's graduates plan to attend college this fall, 

with another 4% entering military service. 

• Thirteen of our seniors received Cum Laude diplomas as 

members of the second class for whom the Cum Laude 

program was available. 

• The school was awarded Standards of Excellence in reading, 

science and social studies by virtue of our students' success 

on state assessments. Our performances rank in the top 

14% for reading, the top 12% in science and the top 11% in 

social studies among all high schools in Kansas. Fewer than 

6% of the high schools in the State of Kansas received three 

or more Standards of Excellence. 

• We were recently notified that our scores for the state 

assessments that were taken last spring will result in the 

school also being awarded a Standard of Excellence in Math. 

• Duwane Miller retired from Kapaun Mt. Carmel after 31 years 

of wonderful service as a teacher and coach. He was 

honored by the KMC Parents Club as Veteran Teacher of the 

Year, while Ben Sperry received recognition as New Teacher 

of the Year and Gary Heath, our Facilities Manager, was 

named Support Staff Member of the Year.

Sister John Ellen Garrity, BVM 

I recently spoke with Sister John Ellen from her home at 

Wright Hall, across the street from Loyola University in 

Chicago, IL. After leaving KMC at the conclusion of the 

1994 school year, Sister went to care for her blood sister 

who has Alzheimer's. Occasionally, she does some 

substitute teaching, but primarily does volunteer work 

with Alzheimer's patients or babysitting children whose 

parents are attending Al-Anon classes. She has very fond 

memories of her 14 years at KMC and vividly recalls 

teaching her World History class songs from WWII. Those

Fr. James Reinert, SJ 

For those men who graduated from Chaplain Kapaun 

Memorial High School between 1959 and 1966, Fr. James 

Reinert was a familiar face in the Principal's office, where 

he served. For the next 7 years, he served in various 

capacities in the Provincial Office for the Jesuits until he 

was moved to a position where he found deep personal 

satisfaction. He was the hospital Chaplain at Harry S. 

Truman Hospital, Cardinal Glennon Childrens' Hospital 

and Bethesda Hospital. "He had a gift of compassion 

with parents suffering in and through their children that 

will be gratefully recounted by those parents for years to 

come", writes Gerald Sheahan, S.J., a fellow Jesuit. Father 

Reinert died from massive heart failure while driving 

home from a Cardinals' baseball game on July 6, 1987.

Ordination of Marstall and Shockey 

Two KMC alumni were ordained to the Priesthood over 

Memorial Day weekend, 2004 by Bishop Emeritus Eugene 

J. Gerber. Pictured are Father Ben Shocky '88 and Father 

David Marstall '96. Both men will serve in the Diocese of 

Wichita, KS. Father Ben's first assignment will be as the 

Assistant Pastor at Holy Cross in Hutchinson, KS. Father 

David will be in residence at All Saints Catholic Church, 

serving as Assistant Pastor and will also teach 4 blocks of 

Religion at KMC.

Featured speaker: Tommy Lasorda 

After a brief big league career as a left-handed pitcher, 

Tommy Lasorda became one of the most enthusiastic and 

successful managers in baseball history. Known for his 

fondness of pasta and pitching, the jovial Lasorda led the 

Dodgers to eight division titles and two World 

Championships in 20 seasons as manager. After his 

retirement, he became a Dodgers executive, and in 1999 

completed his 50th year in the organization. He also 

managed the United States to its first-ever gold medal in 

baseball at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

MEMORIALS 

Establishing a Memorial Fund for the benefit of Kapaun 

Mount Carmel in memory of a family member or close 

friend is just one way to recognize the support that the 

deceased person felt for the mission and purpose of KMC. 

Each fund is initially established for the specific purpose 

intended by the originating donor, but can accept 

charitable contributions from anyone interested in 

furthering the support of KMC. Thanks to the originating 

donors for establishing the following funds in this past 

fiscal year. 

Emelia C. Manning Memorial Fund 

Purpose – at the discretion of the schools administration 

Mark S. Baker '65 Memorial Fund 

Purpose – support of families who attend KMC 

Kevin Deaver '73 Memorial Fund 

Purpose – support of KMC building projects 

HONORARIUMS 

Functioning in the same basic way that a Memorial Fund 

does, donors can elect to establish a fund to honor a living 

person, perhaps to recognize them on a special day. Some 

will consider doing this to remember an anniversary, a 

birthday, or the anniversary of an ordination.
