CPHS COACHING STAFF
Phil Burnett,
Defensive Line
Phil Burnett is entering his 1 st season on
the Bulldog staff. Coach Burnett is a graduate
of Hobart High School (1983), Northern
Illinois University (B.S. 1988), and Oregon
State University (M.S. 1992). He played collegiately
at Northern Illinois University and
has since spent time coaching defensive
football in the college ranks at Northern
Illinois University, Oregon State University,
Defiance College, Califormia University of
Pennsylvania, Ball State University, and
University of North Carolina – Pembroke.
Coach Burnett resides in Hobart.
Nick Jones,
Offensive Line
Nick Jones is entering his 1 st season
as a member of the Crown
Point football staff. Coach Jones
is a graduate of Crown Point High
School (2009) where he was an
offensive and defensive lineman. He
is continuing his formal education in
the School of Education at Indiana
University Northwest. Coach Jones
resides in Crown Point.
Mike Depta,
Freshman Assistant Coach
Mike Depta is entering 5 th season with the
Crown Point football staff. Coach Depta
is a graduate of Merrillville High School
(1988), St. Joseph College (B.S. 1992),
and Indiana University M.S. (1996). Coach
Depta has over 18 years teaching and
coaching experience with stops at Edison
High School, Highland Middle and High
Schools, Taft and Wheeler Middle Schools,
and Crown Point High School. He has
coached both offensive and defensive football.
Coach Depta and his wife Maggie
reside in Crown Point with their children
Ben (13), Mia (9), and Ellie (6).
Mark Garrett,
Strength & Conditioning
Mark Garrett is beginning his 4 th season
as Crown Point High School’s strength and
conditioning coordinator. Prior to Crown
Point High School, Mark was strength coach
at Milan High School in southern Indiana
near Cincinnati. While at Milan, Coach
Garrett oversaw the development of athletes
that won over 40 team championships in
ten different sports. Coach Garrett also
started the Hoosier Barbell Club, an Olympic
weightlifting team at CPHS. Coach Garrett is
a graduate of Cloverdale High School (1988),
and the University of Maine – Presque Isle
(1992). Coach Garrett and his wife Wendi
live in Crown Point with their three children,
A.J. (10), Kerry (8), and Michael (5).
Matt McCaleb,
Freshman Assistant Coach
Matt McCaleb is beginning his 9 th season
with the Crown Point staff. This is Matt’s
6th season with the freshman team. Prior
to working with the 9th grade squad,
Coach McCaleb was the head coach at
Taft Middle School in Crown Point. Matt
is a graduate of Chesterton High School
(1997) and Valparaiso University (B.S.
2001). Coach McCaleb teaches United
States Government at CPHS. He is also a
varsity assistant coach for the Crown Point
baseball team. Coach McCaleb resides in
Crown Point.
Tom Gulbrandsen,
Asst. Defensive Backs
Tom Gulbrandsen is entering his 5 th season
as an assistant coach working with
the defensive backs. Coach Gulbrandsen
is a graduate of Addison Trail High School
(1975) in Addison, Illinois. He earned
his bachelor’s degree from Illinois State
University in Normal, Illinois. Tom has
been a 15-year volunteer for the Bulldog
football program. Coach Gulbrandsen
resides in Crown Point and is proud to
have raised two CPHS graduates: Sara
(1999) and Eric (2003).
Trent Trump,
Head Trainer
Trent Trump is beginning his 17 th
season as the athletic trainer for
the Bulldogs. Trent is a graduate
of Crown Point High School
(1991) and Ball State University
(B.S. 1995), where he earned his
degree in Athletic Training. Trent
and his wife Mary Ellen reside
in Crown Point with their son
Ethan (9).
Jake Rodriguez,
Freshman Head Coach
Jake Rodriguez is beginning his 8th
season with the Crown Point football
staff. This is Coach Rodriguez’s 6th
season as the freshman head coach.
Prior to his stint as head coach, Coach
Rodriguez was the freshman defensive
coordinator. Coach Rodriguez
teaches physical education at Crown
Point High School and is a varsity
wrestling coach. Coach Rodriguez
and his wife Jen reside in Crown Point
and have a daughter Ava (1).
Branden Lorek,
Freshman Assistant Coach
Branden Lorek begins his 4th year with
the Bulldog Football program serving as a
Freshman Assistant Coach. Branden graduated
from Fenton High School, in Bensenville,
Illinois (2000). Coach Lorek received a bachelor’s
degree from Southern Illinois University-
Edwardsville. He was also a four-year member
of the wresting team. Branden is currently
teaching special education at Crown Point
High School. He is also the head J.V. Wrestling
Coach. Branden and his wife, Anne, live in
Crown Point.
