Ways to give<br />
annual giving An annual gift is an expendable contribution to <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>State</strong> Athletics. Annual gifts truly make<br />
a difference in the lives <strong>of</strong> our fine young men and women. Gifts by currency or personal check immediately benefit<br />
the Department <strong>of</strong> Intercollegiate Athletics and are easiest and most direct way to give, however pledges can also<br />
be made in support if any <strong>of</strong> the athletic programs.<br />
Corporate Matching gifts Matching gifts are an easy way for <strong>donors</strong> to double and even triple the impact <strong>of</strong><br />
their annual gifts. If you or a spouse’s employer is a matching gift company, just ask your human resources <strong>of</strong>fice for<br />
a matching gift form.<br />
endowments An endowment is the time-<strong>honor</strong>ed method <strong>of</strong> allocating certain gifts to an investment fund. This<br />
fund is invested to earn income each year. As the principal grows, so does the income. The fund is used to support<br />
student-athlete scholarships, however the principal always remains invested in order to grow the fund.<br />
When you make a gift to our endowment fund, it can be an outright gift or deferred. Your gift can turn into a legacy<br />
<strong>of</strong> annual gifts for <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Mankato</strong> Athletics in your name, or in the name <strong>of</strong> a loved one, while also gaining<br />
tax benefits for your generosity.<br />
Planned giving Planned gifts provide for tomorrow’s <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Mankato</strong> and sometimes benefit the donor<br />
during their lifetime. Types <strong>of</strong> planned gifts include bequests, life income arrangements, charitable gift annuities, deferred<br />
gift annuities, charitable reminder trusts, real estate with retained life use, and charitable life trusts. Members <strong>of</strong><br />
the <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Mankato</strong>’s development staff work with <strong>donors</strong>’ legal and financial pr<strong>of</strong>essionals to create estate<br />
plans that provide maximum benefit to the donor and the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
Donors who have included <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Mankato</strong> in their wills and estate are invited to join the MSU Heritage, an<br />
<strong>honor</strong>ary giving society.<br />
securities Gifts <strong>of</strong> appreciated securities to <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Mankato</strong> provide the donor with income tax deductions<br />
based on the appreciated value <strong>of</strong> the stock as long as the donor has held the stock for at least 12 months and<br />
1 day. The owner pays not capital gains tax on gifts <strong>of</strong> stock to <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Mankato</strong>.<br />
