sound work in production and services – and, most important,
on the truth. This statement by a university teacher
at the University of Memphis clearly shows what really
counts in successful brand management: keeping a
clear focus on quality and calculability.
In this context, the results of the poll for the Best Brand
2008 are no real surprise: in the trailer category, Krone
clearly came out on top. The ETM Verlag had invited
readers of its publications lastauto omnibus, Fernfahrer
and trans aktuell to cast their vote. The answer of
the nearly 8,500 participants was quite clear. Most answers
to the question „Which company convinces you
most with its products?“ opted for the company from
the Emsland.
„We are very lucky with this award“, said Dr. Albers, Krone‘s
combining a low cost level, top
performance quality and a high
level of environment and social
The winners convinced
Limits
The general conditions under which companies in the transport and logistics branch
are currently operating are not easy. Rising fuel prices and the planned increase in
toll charges are companied with the image of being an eco killer and the problem of
finding suitably qualified drivers. Ever tougher competition demands cost cut-backs.
But there are different ways of reacting to this situation.
6 trailerforum
for a long time, German business hoped
it would be able to sit out current
energy price developments without
having to forward price increases
to its customers. A current survey by the
German Chambers of Commerce and Industry
(DIHK) among 120 logistics and
transport companies indicates that the
dramatic rise in fuel prices has made
costs increase by up to 10%. The absolute
limit seems to have been reached.
But long-term contract terms make it
difficult to adapt conditions quickly. Although
the contracts contain price escalation
clauses, these only apply when the
price increases permanently. So all most
hauliers can do is hope for the goodwill
of their contract partners.
The increase in toll charges planned
for 1 January 2009 doesn‘t
help either. This is a „business destruction
programme that hits
SME companies on a previously
unknown scale“, according to a
letter from the Bundesverbands
Güterkraftverkehr Logistik und
Entsorgung (BGL Federation of
Haulage, Logistics and Disposal)
to the powers that be. Even
low-emission vehicles are facing
toll increases of 40% over
the previous level, with increases
of up to 88% for older vehicles.
The states of Bavaria, Lower Saxony,
North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony, Saar-
land, Hesse and Thuringia have decided
not to implement the increases as
of 1 January 2009. Emilia Müller, Minister
for Transport in Bavaria, wants to
postpone the increase to
2010 to give companies
time to adapt their terms
and conditions in dialogue
with their customers.
Hesse even completely
rules out the amendments
to the motorway
toll law and the toll increase
regulations.
Another problem facing
German hauliers is the acute lack of drivers.
Many companies are searching desperately
for qualified staff. Employees
have to meet increased requirements:
perfect command of the German language
as far as possible, together with a
groomed appearance and correspondingly
courteous conduct in dealing with
customers are basic prerequisites today.
After all, the drivers are the company‘s
visiting card. In addition, drivers have
to be familiar with the maintenance and
technical aspects of their trucks. On 7
July 2006, the Federal Council adopted
the professional drivers qualifications
law (BKrFQG). This stipulates that in future,
truck drivers will have to provide
verification of special job-related skills
and know-how. Such verification has
to consist in a basic qualification – for
beginners – and regular on-going training
courses in eco-training, (social)
regulations for freight transport, safety
features and equipment, driving safety
and load securing. The aims are to improve
road traffic safety, make driving
more economical and reach a standard
level of qualification throughout the EU.
One problem that the whole road freight
transport sector is struggling with is its
image. The branch is severely criticized
with regard to environment compatibility.
After all, the rate of freight transport
on German roads has quintupled
since 1970.
maKIng full use of potentIal
And so working
conditions really have not
got any easier; hauliers
face ever more complex
issues, while the significance
of the branch is
increasing all the time.
Rapid growth in the flow
of goods and new technologies
are only two of the
positive factors impacting the transport
and logistics branch. Many still tend to
see themselves as a boom branch. Chancellor
Angela Merkel spoke to last year‘s
Logistics Congress, Federal Minister of
Transport Wolfgang Tiefensee has asserted
master plan. In other words, funds have
once again been made available for the
transport industry and for the infrastructure.
„Germany plays a very important
role as Europe‘s transport hub
so that German logistics service providers
profit particularly from the benefits
of globalization“, summarizes Björn
Helmke, senior editor at DVZ.
There is no standstill in the transport
and logistics branch: it is constantly in
motion and undergoing further deve-
lopment. And it shows many positive approaches
to how fuel can be saved, the
environment protected and costs reduced
overall: with new vehicle concepts,
training courses and competitions.
new vehIcle concepts A vehicle fleet
should always be kept technically up to
date, and its trucks should certainly fulfil
the „Euro Five“ standard. This helps to
save fuel and reduce toll charges. As in
the car sector, truck manufacturers are
also expected to produce more efficient
technical solutions. The new Profi Liner
Eco by Krone for example is a truly
streamlined semi-trailer that combines
economical and ecological aspects. Aerodynamic
components bring immediate
savings in fuel costs. „As responsible
trailer manufacturers, we want to
the transport branch has become the driving force
behind innovation in the environment discussion.
offer our customers solutions that help
them cut back their fuel costs“, explains
Dr. Frank Albers, Marketing Director at
Krone. Aerodynamic design for saving
general and also fuel costs applies to the
tarpaulins as well; here Krone uses a new
kind of side tarpaulin with pneumatic
central locking. It has only four locking
points instead of the usual 25. This innovative
tarpaulin design offers additional
benefits for the driver and transport
company: it not only reduces transhipment
times but also clearly diminishes
the risk of injuries, as the driver works
the pneumatic central locking system
from the front of the vehicle so that he
can no longer be injured if the load slips,
for example.
traInIng for drIvers If a company is
equipped with state-of-the-art vehicles,
the drivers have to be kept up to date so
that they can use the new „hardware“
correctly. Special courses for drivers, socalled
„Eco Training“ help them to drive
economically. Course participants are
taught how to make correct use of all
the technical features of their trucks, to
drive with foresight and effectively. For
example, cruising at a lower, constant
speed will usually bring them to their
destination faster than if they are constantly
braking and accelerating, and
helps to save fuel as well. Perhaps they
do not know that the engine of a 40 ton
truck guzzles between three and six litres
of fuel an hour when left running in
neutral. Economical driving is also kind
to the environment, cutting fuel consumption
by at least 5% and reducing
CO2 emissions by several hundred tons
each year. And this all helps to improve
the „green“ image of the road freight
BacKground
The Profi Liner Eco demonstrates
Krone‘s environmental responsibility
while focusing clearly on customer
benefits. Use of the innovative vehicle
can make a sustainable contribution
to protecting the environment
and cutting costs. Fuel consumption
can be reduced by 5% with a clear decrease
in CO2 emissions. What‘s more,
the Profi Liner Eco also offers important
safety aspects (see detailed vehicle
description on page 12).
transport sector.
Last year, for the first time 25 drivers
from various hauliers throughout Germany
entered a competition for the
most economical driver, or „Eco Profi“
for short. Thanks to the huge echo, the
competition is being repeated this autumn.
Following an observation run, all
participants are given theoretical ecotraining
and practical course materials.
After a week in which the drivers put
their acquired know-how into practice,
they are put to the test. They have to
drive loaded trucks with identical performance
and equipment. The vehicles
are provided with a measuring system
to document the relevant data about the
driver‘s performance. A neutral passenger
accompanies every vehicle to monitor
the route, safe driving and normal
speed. DKV Euro Service brought the
„Eco Profi“ into being, using a measuring
concept developed by the University
of St. Gallen.
eco performance award To survive
in today‘s competitive environment, it
is of course not enough just to have an
Eco Profi in the fleet. On the contrary,
companies have to provide top quality,
sustainable logistics and transport services
while reducing costs at the same
time. These requirements are summarized
by the phrase „Eco Performance“ as
a holistic approach to evaluating entrepreneurial
performance. Together with
financial motifs and environmental
goals, social aspects are also taken into
account. „Constant further development
on all three levels, i.e. technical, human
and management level, sustainably enhances
immunity to crisis situations
and the prospects of the branch in general,“
says Michael Kubenz, Chairman of
the Deutscher Speditions- und Logistikverbands
e.V. (DSLV – German Haulage
and Logistics Association).
The Eco Performance Award was presented
for the first time again in 2007 by
Metro Group Logistics for achieving
clear reductions in its emission levels.
This resulted from a whole package of
logistics improvements, using telematic
systems and a clear strategy in vehicle
procurement for the fleet. „Winning the
Eco Performance Award has once again
confirmed for us that we have found
a good balance in our daily work between
an economical and ecological approach“,
says Markus Wagener, responsible
for corporate development of the
Metro subsidiaries. Environment protection
will continue to play an increasingly
major role in trade and logistics,
also because this helps to cut back costs
significantly. Efficient use of transport
resources is a crucial factor: pooling volumes
and operating at high capacity
levels with a dense transport network
all helps not only to reduce necessary
tours, empty runs and pollution but also
to cut back on costs.
Another example is the Hanse Globe
which was awarded for the first time
in 2007. The Logistics Initiative Hamburg
awards the Hanse Globe to environment-friendly
logistics projects. The
prize can go to a logistics company, an
institution or public utility. One interesting
aspect is that participation is not
restricted in geographical terms. „We are
looking for the best environment projects
in the logistics sector. In future, the
top performers will have to take account
of both cost effectiveness and environment
compatibility“, explains Professor
Dr. Peer Witten, spokesman for the initiative.
Such activities have an extremely
positive impact on the image of the
whole logistics and transport branch, as
revealed by the response from political
quarters, among others. Patron of the
environment prize in Hamburg is Ole
von Beust, the city‘s Lord Mayor.
Last year, the prize went to the express
service provider TNT with its internal
project „Planet Me“. Professor Mojib Latif,
chairman of the jury and well-known
climate researcher, explained the jury‘s
decision as follows: „The sustainability
project „Planet Me“ by TNT Express
for reducing CO2 emissions has convinced
the jury because it includes all
divisions of the company right throughout
the country at TNT‘s 31 sites.“ In
urban areas, TNT uses natural gas vehicles
for parcel deliveries. The extensive
programme also covers water and power
consumption as well as energy consumption
of central heating systems. It
goes without saying that such activities
are not an end in themselves. They help
the companies to reduce costs on a high
level while giving them a clear position
vis-à-vis their competitors. Customers
can be addressed and mobilized with
completely new messages. This activation
potential also applies to future
employees. Today already, trend studies
show that senior executives take a critical
look at potential employers also in
terms of a company‘s ecological strategy.
But driver training courses, efficient
are all in vain without the right
facing land transport – toll charge increases,
fuel price increases – there are
still further signs of clear growth. While
rone‘s ground-breaking ceremony
for its first factory in Turkey
brings the company closer to the
growth markets of tomorrow. The first
curtain semi-trailers are expected to
leave the new production line in Tire
near Izmir already in September 2009.
The company is focussing on the region
around the Black Sea, the Middle East
and North Africa as future sales markets
for up to 10,000 units. Which goals
are being targeted with Krone‘s expan-
sion in Turkey? And how are the new
markets to be developed? Trailer Forum
spoke with Bernard Krone and Dr. Jürgen
Föhrenbach.
Mr. Krone, Dr. Föhrenbach, the growth chances
for transport and logistics companies today
are to be found above all in European
countries. What is the significance of the
steps you are currently taking in Turkey?
Bernard Krone: The investment volume of
around €35 million is a clear indication
of our intention to take up a sustainable
position in the Black Sea region, where
we see great potential for growth in future
decades.
How familiar are you with the market?
Bernard Krone: Four years ago we started
to serve the market with our Turkish sales
partner Doĝuş Otomotiv. The company
is well established in Turkey. We
entered into a Joint Venture with Doĝuş
as the ideal partner for us in this region.
A fundamental concept of partnership
has always been one of our corporate
principles.
dr. Jürgen föhrenbach: Krone‘s strategy
is to enter into long-term sales
» we will be present in all attractive
regions of europe «
partnerships abroad. With clear advantages:
no-one knows a country, its
people and its unwritten laws better
than the corresponding national partner
on site. While Doĝuş deals with the
market, we concentrate on our core
competence: making premium quality
vehicles.
But modern logistics would also let you
serve the Turkish market from your
headquarters in Werlte...?
Bernard Krone: We attach great importance
to market proximity and being
close to our cusotmers. We can only react
flexibly to market demands by being
present on site. In addition, Krone‘s dynamic
growth also means that we need
additional production capacities.
So you are relocating parts of your production
process abroad?
Bernard Krone: No, not at all. At the moment
we make specific deliveries of socalled
semi knock-down packages to
some European countries. These consist
in pre-assembled vehicles without
superstructure. Final assembly is then
completed in our own facilities and in
our partner companies in France, Spain,
Hungary and Turkey. In view of the market
conditions in Turkey, we took the decision
last year to intensify our involvement
here.
What are your goals on this market?
dr. Jürgen föhrenbach: Given the strong
growth in freight transport in Europe,
we see the Turkish Republic as a financially
interesting future market. We
also want to cultivate the neighbouring
countries from this basis. Turkey will be
our beachhead to the Turkic states and
the Near East.
Bernard Krone: Our aim is to become
Number One in Turkey. By the end of
2009 we should have an output of three
to four thousand units p.a. In the medium
term we will be aiming for 10,000
units p.a.
»We count on stable
partnerships.«
What role does Doĝuş Otomotiv‘s play in
your activities on the Bosporus?
dr. Jürgen föhrenbach: The outstanding
activities of our partner have made
us the Number One import brand in
our segment in Turkey in just eighteen
months. Today already we are selling
more than 1,000 units p.a.
Which vehicles will you be producing in
Turkey?
Bernard Krone: Profi Liners with steel
walls, Mega Liners, Paper Liners and
container chassis.
What differences will there be to Krone
products „made in Germany“?
Bernard Krone: None. Our products have
the same technical standards all over
the world, without any low tech. Our
creed is one brand, one quality!
How will you be assuring consistent Krone
quality standards in Turkey?
Bernard Krone: We will be starting with
16 trailerforum
a training and qualification programme
in the autumn, including a possibility
for sharing experiences. Our Turkish
employees will be coming to Werlte to
meet their production colleagues. We
In BrIef
will also be offering our Turkish employees
who work in our German factories
an opportunity to return home to Turkey.
But this will not involve any relocation
of jobs.
dr. Jürgen föhrenbach: And we are investing
in state-of-the-art technology.
As far as paintwork quality, pre-treatment
and powder coating is concerned,
the production level will be on the very
highest quality standard.
Has your investment decision been influenced
by general political conditions
in Turkey?
Bernard Krone: No, It is normal procedure
to review the political circumstances and
general conditions in a country when making
such investment. We are really quite
spoilt here in Germany when it comes to
k Bernard Krone, born 1977, has a classic double qualification. Following
a technical apprenticeship and degree course, he worked for a
few years as consultant for the Technology Management Group (TMG)
in Karlsruhe, before becoming the fourth generation to join the family
company and working as a Managing Director for the Krone Holding.
Since 1 August 2008, he is also Chairman of the Management Board at Maschinenfabrik
Bernard Krone.
k Dr. Jürgen Föhrenbach, born 1941, took a degree and doctorate in
economics at the University of Freiburg. Since 2000 he has held a leading
position as CEO and Executive Chairman in the Bernard Krone Holding. In
2006, he became Managing Chairman of the Advisory Board of Bernard
As an entrepreneur, I say there‘s an entrepreneurial
risk to every investment. The
Turkey together with our partner Doĝuş
» our creed is:
one brand, one
quality! «
Otomotiv is the right decision.
What do you see as being the greatest
challenge?
Bernard Krone: The challenge will be in
coming to terms with the culture of a
country which is European to a very
small extent, but which for the most
part belongs to Asia.
dr. Jürgen föhrenbach: Our philosophy
of always working together with strong
partners abroad therefore makes sense
The starting signal
for a joint trailer
factory in Tire.
in many respects. Also when it comes to
security and safety. We feel at home in
Turkey with Doĝuş at our side.
Which other countries are on your agenda?
What is your expansion strategy?
dr. Jürgen föhrenbach: Today Krone
has sales partners in 35 countries. In
our search for suitable production sites,
we will be concentrating on less
central regions in Europe where there
is movement on the market. Russia
is one option, where we are reviewing
the possibilities of developing various
foreign sites, without being under any
pressure.
The German economy is facing a downturn.
Transport companies are struggling
with increasing pressure on costs.
How do you see the further development
of your domestic market?
Bernard Krone: Compared to the last two
years, at the moment the German mar-
ket is going through a certain saturation
phase in the economic cycle. The financial
crisis, fuel prices, developments
on the steel market and also issues such
as a lack of drivers are making themselves
felt in the business. We are trying to
keep a hold on the resulting price increases.
I am very confident in the long
term, because there will always be a
need to transport goods on the road in
our increasingly networked world.
If the general weather situation in Germany
cools down, you could always go
to Turkey on holiday…?
Bernard Krone: Turkey is a beautiful
country! Just recently my wife and I went
on a golfing holiday in Belce to improve
my handicap.
And what is your handicap, if I may
ask?
Bernard Krone: You‘d probably better not
write that down .....!
A new study by the EU puts new life into the discussion
about introducing the EuroCombi, with factual arguments
clearly in favour of the 25 m truck-trailer combination. The
trade and associations are hoping it will be introduced.
h
opes would appear to be restored
in the 25 m truck-trailer combination
on Europe‘s long-distance
roads. Among others, the CO2 discussion
and the ongoing commitment from
the haulage branch can give new impetus
to the pioneering project.
four alternatIves for the road. A corresponding
study by the European Union
has revealed highly interesting results.
The Belgian University of Leuven confirms
that the vehicle concept would
fundamentally have a positive impact
on Europe‘s economy which is highly
dependent on transport. On the other
hand, this would slow down the process
of transferring transport from the road to
other means of conveyance
The Bundesverband Güterkraftverkehr,
Logistik und Entsorgung (BGL – Federation
of Haulage, Logistics and Disposal)
together with the Bundesverband des
Groß- und Außenhandels (BGA – Federation
of German Wholesale and Foreign
Trade) welcomes the renewed discussion
about uniform introduction of these vehicle
combinations throughout Europe.
The EU study features four scenarios. The
first version keeps the current limits of
18.75 m in length and 40 tons, the second
includes a maximum solution with 25.25
m in length and 60 tons gross weight.
The third alternative proposes introducing
stipulated road corridors for the EuroCombi,
while the fourth version looks
at introducing a gross weight of 44 tons
for an overall length of 20.75 m.
This fourth configuration would be interesting
particularly for transporting 45‘
containers.
the eurocombi
provides effective
relief for roads and
the environment
The truck-trailer combinations used
for decades in Scandinavia would appear
to be the most practical solution.
Central European freight transport often
does not make full use of the projected
gross weight of 60 tons. A maximum
overall length of 25 m is suitable
for economical and ecological conveyance
of the transport volumes that
need to be transported by business and
industry today. Using innovative vehicle
concepts such as the EuroCombi, it
should be possible to reduce the CO2
emissions per transported ton of load
by up to 50% compared to conventional
semi-trailers. The long truck-trailer
combination would increase transport
capacities without using additional vehicles
and without any great impact on
traffic density.
maKIng use of proven technology Moreover,
the big solution uses existing,
proven vehicle concepts. Depending on
the purpose and route, the EuroCombi
can be downgraded to a conventional
semi-trailer. Thanks to the steered trailer
axles, the vehicles are capable of navigating
all prevalent road curve radii without
any problems. And the reduced axle
pressure of the seven-axle combination
even diminishes the load on Europe‘s
roads.
The EuroCombi thus brings measurable
advantages in financial terms for hauliers
and their customers and for the economy
as a whole by cutting back on fuel emissions
and reducing the wear and tear on
the roads while retaining the same traffic
infrastructure. The EU is expected to take
a decision on introducing the 25 m trucktrailer
combination throughout Europe
before the end of the year.
»The EuroCombi
concept is politically
unstoppable.«
