After reviewing the comments made by television and radio stations, judges,<br />

attorneys, court administrators and the general public, the Court approved an<br />

order on Aug. 26, 1987, to permit cameras and recorders in courtrooms on a one-<br />

year trial basis.<br />

The guidelines approved today are similar to those in effect for the past<br />

year. They prohibit coverage <strong>of</strong> the jury selection process and leave to the<br />

discretion <strong>of</strong> the trial judge any decision to "terminate, suspend, limit or<br />

exclude" coverage <strong>of</strong> a court proceeding.<br />

Also contained in the guideline are rules with regard to media equipment,<br />

lights, number <strong>of</strong> media personnel, types <strong>of</strong> cameras, position <strong>of</strong> equipment<br />

operators and movement within the courtroom.<br />

A request to use 'electronic equipment to cover a trial must be made in<br />

writing by the news media at least three days before the trial starts.<br />
