<strong>Experiences</strong> <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Detensor</strong>-<strong>Method</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>long</strong> <strong>term</strong> <strong>traction</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>rapy for <strong>the</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>e<br />
Ailments <strong>in</strong> connection <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>e that are not only wide spread <strong>in</strong> sports. Nearly<br />
every second person <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world suffers from back pa<strong>in</strong> and <strong>the</strong>se people know low<br />
<strong>long</strong> and difficult <strong>the</strong> path to heal<strong>in</strong>g is. It is <strong>the</strong> task of all of us to reduce and ease this<br />
path.<br />
It is generally known that <strong>the</strong> effect of heal<strong>in</strong>g depends upon what was prescribed, but<br />
also by whom and how. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to our op<strong>in</strong>ion, director Kurt Kienle<strong>in</strong> solved this<br />
ideally <strong>with</strong> his <strong>Detensor</strong>-<strong>Method</strong>. Traction <strong>the</strong>rapy of <strong>the</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>e has been a well known<br />
method for a <strong>long</strong> time and has assumed a secure place <strong>in</strong> conservative <strong>the</strong>rapy. There<br />
are a number of different variations which, however, require considerable technical<br />
competence, comb<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>with</strong> great psychological stress, especially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> acute phase of<br />
<strong>the</strong> disease.<br />
We have analyzed different concepts for this problem at our <strong>in</strong>stitute and have come to<br />
<strong>the</strong> conclusion that <strong>the</strong> method developed by Dr. Kurt Kienle<strong>in</strong>, BDR, <strong>in</strong> spite and<br />
especially because of it’s simplicity conta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> greatest potential for success. The<br />
<strong>Detensor</strong>-<strong>Method</strong> makes it possible to apply optimally dosaged <strong>traction</strong> to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />
sp<strong>in</strong>al sections, exclud<strong>in</strong>g any over extension and <strong>the</strong> associated additional mechanical<br />
stress.<br />
We use <strong>the</strong> system s<strong>in</strong>ce 1987 for <strong>the</strong>rapy and prophylaxis. Over 100 athletes <strong>with</strong><br />
diseases of <strong>the</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>e were treated detensorologically on <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rapy mat and <strong>the</strong><br />
system dur<strong>in</strong>g that time.<br />
The patients had participated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g sport<strong>in</strong>g events:<br />
- Light athletics: High jump and pole vault<strong>in</strong>g, Marathon,<br />
Hammer throw, Shot-putt<strong>in</strong>g, Hurdle race<br />
- Individual events: Wrest<strong>in</strong>g, Box<strong>in</strong>g, Judo<br />
- Ice skat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
- Basketball<br />
- Volleyball<br />
- Swimm<strong>in</strong>g<br />
- Archery<br />
The <strong>in</strong>juries were divided <strong>in</strong>to 4 groups:<br />
- Radicular orig<strong>in</strong><br />
- Pseudoradicular orig<strong>in</strong><br />
- Sp<strong>in</strong>al contusions<br />
- Osteochondroses<br />
Basic <strong>the</strong>rapy was <strong>traction</strong> by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Detensor</strong>-<strong>Method</strong>. Medication (analgesics,<br />
spasmolytics, etc.) and <strong>in</strong> a few cases also psycho<strong>the</strong>rapy. The treatment was highly<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividualized depend<strong>in</strong>g upon severity and type of <strong>in</strong>jury.<br />
Because of objective reasons, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Detensor</strong>-<strong>Method</strong> could not always be applied on <strong>the</strong><br />
first day. Our experiences, never<strong>the</strong>less, have shown that <strong>the</strong> immediate application can<br />
accelerate <strong>the</strong> heal<strong>in</strong>g process, especially <strong>with</strong> <strong>in</strong>juries. 1-4 treatments were applied<br />

daily, <strong>with</strong> a duration from 40-70 m<strong>in</strong>utes. S<strong>in</strong>ce psychological factors play an important<br />
role <strong>in</strong> every form of <strong>the</strong>rapy, we attempted to achieve <strong>the</strong> best possible relaxation by<br />
elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g optical and mechanical stimuli. The technique of recl<strong>in</strong>ation is most<br />
important for optimal <strong>traction</strong>.<br />
The majority of <strong>the</strong> patients treated already registered reduction of pa<strong>in</strong> and<br />
improvement <strong>in</strong> well be<strong>in</strong>g after <strong>the</strong> first detenserologic treatment. Generally <strong>the</strong> patient<br />
rose <strong>with</strong> a typical movement which we call „syndrome of <strong>the</strong> vanished pa<strong>in</strong>“<br />
respectively „<strong>Detensor</strong>-Syndrome“. The back is be<strong>in</strong>g felt search<strong>in</strong>g for pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>with</strong>out<br />
f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g it.<br />
It occurred that athletes due to <strong>the</strong> absence of pa<strong>in</strong>, considered fur<strong>the</strong>r treatment<br />
unnecessary <strong>with</strong> <strong>in</strong>evitable recurrence.<br />
For this reason, we recommend m<strong>in</strong>imal <strong>the</strong>rapy periods from 7-10 days <strong>with</strong> 3-4<br />
sessions per day. Cont<strong>in</strong>uation of <strong>the</strong>rapy is especially important follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> acute<br />
phase. We advise our athletes, even after discharge from <strong>the</strong> hospital, to use <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>rapy mat several times daily, especially after physical performances to reta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
already achieved effect. <strong>Experiences</strong> <strong>with</strong> athletes us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Detensor</strong>-<strong>Method</strong><br />
accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> described application, re<strong>in</strong>force <strong>the</strong> choice of method and it’s reliability.<br />
The advantage of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Detensor</strong>-<strong>Method</strong> compared to o<strong>the</strong>rs does not only lie <strong>in</strong> it’s<br />
success but also <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> simplicity of handl<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> anatomically and physiologically<br />
correct position<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>e, as well as <strong>the</strong> psychological components, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong><br />
system is but a simple mat, respectively bed for <strong>the</strong> patient. The overall shape is<br />
es<strong>the</strong>tic, appeal<strong>in</strong>g and elegant, which is <strong>the</strong> reason for <strong>the</strong> past and current acceptance<br />
and tolerance of <strong>the</strong> method by our patients. A considerable disadvantage is <strong>the</strong> fact,<br />
that it is not yet possible to purchase <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rapy system <strong>with</strong> Soviet Rubels<br />
everywhere, limit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> number of patients that could o<strong>the</strong>rwise have been helped. I<br />
wish - that <strong>in</strong>ternational colleagues will soon f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> opportunity to seriously consider<br />
<strong>Detensor</strong>ology <strong>in</strong> order to help <strong>the</strong>ir patients as effectively as have <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past years.<br />
In conclusion and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> name of my St. Petersburg colleagues and especially <strong>the</strong><br />
patients, I would like to extend our gratitude to <strong>the</strong> author of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Detensor</strong>-<strong>Method</strong>, Dr.<br />
Kurt Kienle<strong>in</strong>. With his method, he made it possible for <strong>the</strong>m to cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>the</strong>ir world<br />
championship sport<strong>in</strong>g activities, i.e. world and European champion Gataul<strong>in</strong>,<br />
Ratuschkow and Topsch<strong>in</strong>a.<br />
