Letter From the Executive Director
This issue of “Pet Prints” is being used to provide you, our patrons and
supporters, with the Cheyenne Animal Shelter’s latest Annual Report.
This Annual Report is a summary of shelter
activities throughout fiscal year 2010-2011,
including financial information and the numbers of
orphaned animals sheltered and cared for during the
year. A special thank you to Lindsey Taylor, our
Community Relations and Marketing Coordinator;
Brock C. Ostrander, our Volunteer Coordinator;
Tori Menard, our Bookkeeper and Donations
Coordinator; Rob Shank, our Shelter Manager;
McGee, Hearne and Paiz, our bookkeeping firm;
and Rickards, Long and Rulon, LLP, our auditors
for all the many hours spent to provide you with the
information herein.
In this newsletter, you will also read about “Baby Doe” - a Boxer that wandered
inside a home starved and neglected. The homeowners found the dog upon their
return and brought Baby Doe to our shelter. With round-the-clock care, the shelter
staff were able to save this innocent, sweet-natured girl who wanted nothing more
than love and a little food. She definitely stole my heart and taught all of us at the
shelter important lessons about loyalty and love. A local family came forward to
adopt Baby Doe and they have given her everything she needs.
The Campbell Family was chosen to adopt Baby Doe while they were stationed
at F.E. Warren AFB. The family had lost their own Boxer just months prior.
Shortly after the adoption, the family moved to Little Rock, Arkansas and lived
there for just under 3 years. The family recently relocated to England! A special
thanks to the Campbell Family for giving Baby Doe - now named Goldie - a second
chance at life!
Prior to their international move, Regina Campbell and her son, Jakob, drove
to our shelter to say hello and gave us the chance to visit with Goldie. They have
always gone out of their way to stay in touch. We look forward to hearing from all
of our shelter alumni! We could not possibly do such life-saving work without your
continued help.
From everyone at CAS, thank you!
Shelter Adoption
Philosophy
Our open adoption
• policy means we never
turn down an interested
adopter, except in
extreme cases like
someone with a history
of animal abuse.
• We will maintain a
supportive relationship
with adopters and their
new pets to help nurture
and cement their bond.
• We accept that not
all adoptions are
perfect, and we
welcome the return of
adopted animals as an
opportunity to learn
more about them to
ensure future successful
placements.
• In the event of a
returned pet, we will
continue to work with
the adopter to find
a more compatible
companion.
How “Baby Doe” became “Goldie”
“Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of
compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature
and its beauty.”
- Albert Einstein
She wandered inside a home already starved and neglected;
weighing roughly 30 pounds. The young Boxer – once named
“Baby Doe” – should have weighed at least 60 pounds. Every rib
on her body protruded and she had an infected leg as well. The
dog just came in through an open door of a random house and was
later found by the homeowners sleeping in a bed. Baby Doe was
quickly rushed to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter.
Though a victim of neglect, Baby Doe showed forgiveness as she
still had affection for others; often wagging her tail as kind visitors
approached her kennel. With the help of a veterinarian, shelter
staff vowed to nurse Baby Doe back to health. Their efforts soon
proved successful. Nearly a month after arriving at the shelter, she
gained weight and her infections healed. The shelter narrowed the
list of potential adopters and eventually drew the name of a concerned
family who had come by several times to inquire about Baby
Doe. This same family offered to help pay all veterinary bills fully
knowing they may not be selected to adopt the Boxer. The family
had already written a get-well card and dropped off various dog
toys after reading about Baby Doe’s plight in the newspaper.
The Campbell Family was selected for the honor of adopting Baby
Doe. At the time, the family was stationed at F.E. Warren AFB and
had lost their own Boxer just months prior. Shortly after the adoption,
the family moved to Little Rock, Arkansas and lived there for
just under 3 years. The Campbell’s renamed Baby Doe – she is
now Goldie.
The family recently visited Cheyenne and came by the shelter to
show everyone the wonderful success story that is “Goldie.”
The family’s son, Jakob, absolutely loves Goldie and is excited she
is part of their daily lives.
“Goldie is now a happy, healthy dog who is definitely part of the
family,” said Regina Campbell. “She is also an excellent traveler.”
We’re happy to hear that Goldie travels well because she just
became an international Boxer. The Campbell’s recently relocated
to Royal Air Force Base Lakenheath – located in Suffolk, England!
From all of us at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter, we salute all who
give animals a second chance at life!

The Feral Cat
Program
The Cheyenne area is a community
with many feral cats. These animals
are not accustomed to contact with
people and are too wild to be handled.
These felines are often cared for by
concerned citizens who have taken it
upon themselves to feed these animals.
Often, these caregivers do not have the
financial resources to provide veterinary
care for their feral community.
In an effort to reduce the overpopulation
of cats in our community, and to
help the caregivers of feral cat colonies,
the Cheyenne Animal Shelter offers an
affordable program to help neuter and
vaccinate feral cats. Through the Feral
Cat Program, feral cats are neutered,
vaccinated, tested for disease and then
are released back into the wild by their
caregivers. These cats are free of deadly
diseases, can no longer reproduce and
are vaccinated against rabies.
The cost per animal to participate in
our Feral Cat Program is $30. This
fee includes neutering, testing for FIV
and FeLuk, and administering vaccinations,
including rabies.
To make an appointment to have a
feral cat neutered, call 307-632-6655
ext. 24. Appointments fill quickly, so
make sure to call at least one day ahead
of time. A limited number of humane
traps are available at the Cheyenne
Animal Shelter, call first to ensure availability.
Pet Loss Support
story by Shirley McCown, Leader
Cheyenne Animal Shelter’s
Pet Loss Support Group
For many of us, our pets are an important part of our lives. They sleep with
us, they eat with us, some go to work with us and some are our constant
companions.
Our pets love us with an unconditional love. They are the ones who have
loved us the most in our lives, sometimes even more than our family and
friends. They are a source of joy and fun. They don’t judge us, question us
or argue with us. They are devoted to us. No matter what our mood is they
are there beside us, they are always forgiving and always believe in us even
when we don’t believe in ourselves. We are their world!
When the time comes that we are faced with our pet becoming terminally
ill or becoming elderly, or our pet suddenly dies, it can be one of the most
devastating and painful experiences we must go through. For many, this loss
is as traumatic as losing a family member or a dear friend, and can trigger an
intense grieving process. Along with the pain, we have the loss of companionship,
the loss of routine in our life and the loss of a reason to get out
of bed in the morning. We have a hole in our heart that we fear will never
mend.
We also experience the stages of the grieving process following the death
of our pet. They are: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, guilt and acceptance.
We can go through these stages in this order, or go through them
in random order, and then back and forth with each one. This is normal, and
there is nothing wrong with us. There is no set time limit to go through the
grieving process and it can differ from one person to another.
It helps to have others to talk with who are experiencing the loss of their pet
companion. Someone who will listen and not be made uncomfortable by our
sorrow and tears. Someone who knows this is normal and there is nothing
wrong with us. Often times our friends and family try to understand, but
hearing “I know just how you feel, I once had to put my pet to sleep when
I was growing up” or “It was just an animal, you’ll get over it” is just not
helpful.
The Cheyenne Animal Shelter offers a Pet Loss Support Group to provide
a gathering for individuals grieving the loss of their pet companion. The
Group meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Laramie County Library
at 7:00pm. There is no cost to attend; all that is asked is that you bring a
picture of your beloved pet. For more information, or to confirm a meeting
date, you may call Brock Ostrander at the Shelter at 307-632-6655 ext. 27 or
Shirley at 307-635-4200.
