France urges ETS solution 

French prime minister François 

Fillon asked European Union 

president José Manuel Barroso to 

‘make all the necessary efforts’ to 

find a solution to the dispute over 

the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme 

that has angered China, India and 

the USA and prompted talk of a 

trade war between the two blocs. 

China has already cancelled $14bn 

in orders from Airbus, and Fillon revealed 

that Airbus, Air France and 

Safran have warned that 2,000 

jobs are at risk. 

US Airway in merger push 

US Airways, the fifth largest US 

carrier, told creditors of American 

Airlines that a merger between the 

two would produce close to $1bn 

in additional revenues and $500m 

in non-labour cost savings, according 

to a report in The Wall Street 

Journal. US Airways has been mulling 

a bid for American for some 

months and became more aggressive 

after American recently sought 

to reject labour contracts in a major 

cost-cutting move. American, 

which entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy 

protection last November, 

has so far rejected the notion of a 

merger with its smaller rival. 

Royal Jordanian ‘will merge’ 

Royal Jordanian Airlines sees a 

merger with another airline as ‘a 

must’, chief executive officer Hussein 

Dabbas told Bloomberg last 

week. High oil prices, competition 

from Middle Eastern rivals 

and a slow economy has made 

it increasingly difficult to ‘continue 

as we are’. Royal Jordanian 

reported losses of 57.9m dinars 

($81.7 m) in 2011, compared to 

a 9.6m dinar profit the prior year. 

‘It’s a very difficult business environment 

and if airlines can find 

the right synergies, they should 

look at merging their operations 

and consolidating,’ said Dabbas. 

Boeing makes up ground on Airbus as Q1 orders surge 

US airframer on course to reclaim lead for first time since 2002 

Boeing has taken a significant 

lead in the order race for 2012, 

posting 440 gross orders for new 

aircraft in the three months to 31 

March, well ahead of Airbus’ 100. 

After cancellations and deferrals, 

the US airframer took 412 net orders, 

a huge increase on the 106 

net orders recorded during the 

same period in 2011. 

Boeing also slightly edged Airbus 

in the deliveries stakes, with 137 

aircraft delivered to its rival’s 131. 

Its deliveries for the quarter were 

32% up on the same period in 

2011, and 7.9% higher than in 

the fourth quarter of last year. 

At this rate, analysts expect Boeing 

to overtake Airbus as the top 

aircraft supplier in 2012, regaining 

the lead for the first time since 

2002. Airbus’ deliveries were up 

10% on the first quarter of 2011, 

as both airframers boosted production 

rates to keep up with rising 

demand in Asia. 

Boeing’s books were strengthened 

by 99 deliveries of its best-selling 

737 narrowbody, up from 87 delivered 

in the first quarter of 2011. 

The company also delivered five 

787 Dreamliners, its all-new car-

to market last fall, more than three 

years behind schedule. 

Airbus said it expected a slowdown 

in 2012, after a flood of 

orders for its new-engine variant, 

the A320neo last year, which contributed

months after Airbus began taking 

orders for the Neo. Observers believe 

it could take orders for up to 

800 MAX family planes this year. 

Both airframers face uncertainties 

over financing available to their 

customers, with many traditional 

sources of funding having dried up 

in the wake of the European sovereign 

debt crisis. Airbus, meanwhile, 

has suffered the cancellation 

of $14bn in orders from China as a 

result of the bitter dispute over the 

EU’s emissions scheme.

Arab Wings first in Middle East to 

fly Global 5000 Jet with Vision Flight 

Deck 

Arab Wings of Amman, Jordan is the first 

operator in the Middle East to take delivery 

of a Global 5000 jet featuring the Vision 

Flight Deck. The new Global 5000 jet joins 

Arab Wings’ fleet of business jets, which 

also includes Challenger 604 and Challenger 

605 aircraft. 

Kenya Airways selects GEnx-1B engines 

to power Boeing 787 fleet 

Kenya Airways selected the GEnx-1B engine 

to power its nine firm Boeing 787 Dreamliners 

with an option for four additional 

aircraft. The firm engine order is valued at 

$380m list price. 

TAB Airlines sources spare engine 

from AFI KLM E&M 

AFI KLM E&M signed a contract with Bolivian 

TAB Airlines for the supply of a spare lease 

engine, plus an engine shopvisit for its DC-10 

freighter. TAB Airlines is operating between 

Bolivia and the United States since July 1999. 

The airline specializes in transporting outsize 

parts, notably for the oil industry. 

Southern Air adds two new 777 

freighters 

Southern Air Holdings reported the addition 

of two Boeing 777Fs to its fleet. With these 

additions, Southern Air will operate four 

777F aircraft, the most advanced twin-engine 

freighter. Southern Air has taken delivery 

of its third 777F and will take delivery of 

its fourth on April 25th from Boeing. 

GE Capital Aviation Services helps 

Aeroflot build long-haul fleet with 

three new Airbus A330s 

GE Capital Aviation Services Limited (GE- 

CAS) announced delivery of two new Airbus 

A330s, on lease to Aeroflot Russian Airlines, 

following a purchase-and-leaseback transaction 

with the airline. A third new Airbus 

A330 is scheduled for delivery in April. All 

three aircraft come from Aeroflot’s existing 

order book with Airbus. 

AWAS delivers two Boeing 737-300 

aircraft to VivaAerobus 

AWAS delivered two additional Boeing 

737-300 passenger aircraft to low-cost carrier 

VivaAerobus. This is the fifth and sixth 

737 Classic that AWAS has delivered to the 

Monterrey, Mexico-based airline. VivaAero- 

Air France takes delivery of 60th 777 passenger jetliner 

Air France took delivery of the 60th Boeing 777 passenger jetliner. The airplane, a 777- 

300ER model, landed in Paris on April 4th. Air France, a member of Sky Team, will operate 

this 777-300ER between Paris and the French Overseas Departments in the Indian 

Ocean and the Caribbean regions, including Fort de France, Pointe a Pitre and St-Denis 

de la Reunion. By summer 2012, Air France will operate a total of 62 777 passenger 

jetliners and two 777 Freighters. 

Air France added the 60th Boeing 777 to its fleet, taking delivery of a 777-300ER (above) last week Boeing 

bus operates an all-737 fleet offering intra- 

Mexico and international flights. 

JAL signs agreement to add new EM- 

BRAER 170 jet to its fleet 

After delivering ten EMBRAER 170 jets to Japan 

Airlines (JAL), Embraer signed an amendment 

to the original contract, signed in June 

2007 with the Japanese airline, for a new 

E170 jet. The value of the deal, at list price, is 

$38m. As the previous ones, this E170, powered 

by GE CF34-8E engines, will be configured 

for 76 passengers, in a single class, and 

will be operated by J-AIR, which is a wholly 

owned subsidiary of JAL, serving the company’s 

regional network in Japan. Delivery is 

planned for the last quarter of 2012. 

TAAG orders three 777-300ERs 

Boeing and Angolan flag carrier TAAG Linhas 

Aereas de Angola (Angola Airlines) finalized 

an order for three additional 777-300ER (Extended 

Range) airplanes. The order, valued at 

$895m at list prices, also includes purchase 

rights for three additional 777-300ERs. 

MRO & PRODUCTION 

Airbus MRO Network welcomes TAM 

MRO as newest member 

TAM MRO, a TAM S.A. holding business 

unit, signed an agreement to become the 

newest member of the Airbus MRO Network. 

The announcement came at the MRO 

Americas conference and exhibition in Dal- 

las, Texas. TAM MRO currently provides services 

for the Airbus A320 and A330/A340 

Families throughout South America. 

Hamilton Sundstrand signs up with 

AFI KLM E&M for 787 component 

services 

Hamilton Sundstrand, a key supplier of 

the Boeing 787 Dreamliner program, and 

Air France Industries KLM Engineering and 

Maintenance signed a long-term repair license 

agreement for providing MRO (Maintenance, 

Repair and Overhaul) services for 

Hamilton Sundstrand’s components on the 

Boeing 787. This relationship allows AFI 

KLM’s engineering and maintenance division 

to expand its nose-to-tail service by 

including Hamilton Sundstrand components 

to Boeing 787 customers in its portfolio. 

This includes latest technologies like electrically 

generated systems and liquid cooling 

components. AFI KLM E&M and Hamilton 

Sundstrand are already cooperating on repair 

services and on-site-support for components 

and projects for other aircraft. 

Aircelle and Applied Composites Engineering 

to expand scope of cooperative 

nacelle services 

The Safran group’s Aircelle business unit 

signed an agreement to enlarge the scope 

of jet engine thrust reverser and nacelle 

repair and services performed by Applied 

Composites Engineering (ACE) in the United 

States, building on three years of successful 

cooperation. This new agreement – which 

was concluded at the MRO Americas confer-

BAE Systems to supply Avro RJ D-C 

cargo hold modification kits to Swiss 

International Airlines 

BAE Systems won a significant contract from 

Swiss International Air Lines to supply D-C 

cargo hold fire detection and suppression 

system modification kits for the conversion 

of the airline’s 20-strong fleet of Avro RJ 

jetliners. Swiss took the decision to modify 

its aircraft ahead of a possible European 

Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) mandated 

requirement. Both the US Federal Aviation 

Administration (FAA) and the Australian 

Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) have 

mandated this upgrade and, as a result, 

BAE Systems Regional Aircraft has in the 

past provided modification kits to airlines in 

these countries. 

Boeing’s Maintenance Performance 

Toolbox reaches 100-customer milestone 

Boeing announced that Star Air, a cargo 

airline based in Dragoer, Denmark, is the 

100th airline to sign up for Boeing’s Maintenance 

Performance Toolbox. Introduced 

in 2005, Toolbox is the industry’s first set of 

productivity tools designed to unify an airline’s 

maintenance and engineering operations 

from start to finish. Star Air operates 

11 Boeing 767 freighters. 

CFM signs CFM56-7B material support 

agreement with Delta Air Lines 

CFM International signed a suite of material 

support agreements with Delta Air Lines 

to support the airline’s fleet of nearly 400 

CFM56-7B engines in service or on order, as 

well as its maintenance, repair and overhaul 

(MRO) operations for third party airlines. The 

agreements provide for the comprehensive 

repair and replacement of life-limited and 

non-life limited parts for the CFM56-7Bengine. 

The agreements also provide Delta with 

technical data for componentrepairs and engine 

overhaul to assist their operations. 

Atlas Air chooses AFI KLM E&M for 

747-400 component services 

Atlas Air opted to contract out component 

maintenance for its fleet of Boeing 747-400s 

to AFI KLM E&M. The long term agreement 

includes repairs and general component 

overhauls on a flight hour basis. 

National Airlines entrusts CF6-80C2 

engines to AFI KLM E&M 

The contract signed between AFI KLM E&M 

and National Airlines covers the maintenance 

of the CF6-80C2 engines equipping the US 

air cargo specialist’s fleet of Boeing 747- 

400Fs. In addition to engine maintenance, 

the agreement also includes the leasing of 

aircraft engines to ensure availability of National 

Airlines aircraft during shop visits. 

AAR awarded multi-year contract to 

provide component repair services 

for Alaska Airlines 

AAR was awarded a 10-year contract by 

Alaska Airlines (Alaska) to provide component 

repair and management services for 

its fleet of 87 Boeing 737-700, 800 and 

900 aircraft in a new cost-per-flight-hour 

program.AAR will test, repair and overhaul 

components with guaranteed turn times, 

providing Alaska with reduced repair costs 

and increased component reliability. AAR 

has served as a supplier of aircraft maintenance, 

repair and overhaul services to Alaska 

since 2002. 

Boeing landing gear exchange program 

signs agreement with CanJet 

Airlines 

Boeing released that CanJet, Canada’s newest 

full-service charter airline, is the first 

Canadian customer for the Boeing landing 

gear exchange program with a service contract 

covering CanJet’s 737-800 airplanes. 

Participants in the landing gear exchange 

program receive fully overhauled and certified 

landing gear shipsets during scheduled 

gear maintenance cycles, giving customers 

an alternative to the capital investment of 

new landing gear. 

VAS Aero Services and Embraer expand 

supply chain partnership 

VAS Aero Services, a global provider of aviation 

logistics and aftermarket services, announced 

the expansion of its distributor 

relationship with Embraer. The agreement 

broadens VAS Aero Services’ role as Embraer 

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) aftermarket 

provider to include surplus and 

pre-owned material for the E-Jets. The additional 

3,000 part numbers bring VAS’s 

Embraer parts inventory total to more than 

18,000 items for which VAS provides marketing, 

sales and distribution services. 

A J Walter Aviation signs three-year 

consignment agreement with StandardAero 

A J Walter Aviation signed a three-year consignment 

agreement with Arizona-based 

StandardAero, marking the start of a longstanding 

relationship between the two companies. 

The agreement means Standard- 

DeltaTechOps signs maintenance and support agreement with Atlas Air 

Delta Air Lines’ maintenance division, Delta TechOps, signed a multi-year exclusive 

agreement with Atlas Air, to provide maintenance and support services for three of the 

company’s Boeing 767-300ER passenger aircraft. Atlas Air is a unit of Atlas Air Worldwide 

Holdings, a global provider of outsourced aircraft and aviation operating services. 

The new agreement includes 331 APU and CF6 engine, time and materials maintenance 

support, and 767-300ER power-by-the-hour component support. 

DeltaTechOps will provide engine maintenance support, among other services, to Atlas Air Delta

• Lufthansa Technik is expanding and restructuring its local presence in the North American market to boost its competitiveness in the 

biggest MRO market worldwide. In the field of Component Services Lufthansa Technik is in the process of concentrating and building 

up its component repair activities in Tulsa, OK. The non-landing gear portfolio of Hawker Pacific Aerospace in Sun Valley, CA, which has 

been type-specific hydraulics plus other hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical and helicopter components work, has just recently been transferred 

to Lufthansa Technik Component Services (LTCS) in Tulsa. Additionally, also the customer service and sales organization of LTCS 

moved to Tulsa, coming from the LTCS headquarters in Sun Valley. Another big step on the product side towards the US MRO market 

was the complete take-over of AirLiance Materials by Lufthansa Technik, just a few weeks ago. Lufthansa Technik took over the shares 

from its joint venture partners United Airlines and Air Canada, and is now the sole owner of the company. Headquartered near Chicago’s 

O’Hare International Airport, AirLiance supplies airlines and MROs with high-end, traceable aircraft parts for heavy maintenance checks, 

overhauls, and repairs of aircraft engines and airframes. 

• Global Aviation Holdings (Global), a provider of charter air transportation, commercial global passenger and cargo air transportation 

services, and Lufthansa Technik AG have extended their existing cooperation for Global’s wholly-owned subsidiaries World 

Airways (World) and North American Airlines (North American). The two companies have signed a new Total Component Maintenance 

TCM contract for up to nine MD11 from World and a Total Component Support TCS for the five Boeing 767-300ER of North American. 

Both contracts cover a period of five years. 

Aero will benefit from AJW’s extensive and 

growing inventory of engine material, some 

of which will be held at the StandardAero 

Cincinnati facility for future utilisation or 

sale. AJW will benefit from StandardAero’s 

comprehensive repair capabilities as well as 

enjoying access to its current inventory also 

for utilisation or sale. StandardAero specialises 

in the repair, maintenance and overhaul 

of gas turbine engines, component parts 

and other aviation services. The Company 

has significantly grown its capability and 

capacity over recent years, including diversification 

into CFM56-5B and -7B engine 

overhaul as well as several APU types. 

GE signs 10-Year OnPoint solution 

agreements with Delta Air Lines 

GE signed two 10-year OnPoint solution 

services agreements with Delta Air Lines for 

its CF6-80C2 engines. The agreements cover 

material support for CF6-80C2 engines that 

Delta owns as well as CF6-80C2 engines 

for third party airlines. The airline has also 

signed CF6-80C2 component repair license 

and engine overhaul support agreements 

with GE. These agreements will provide

assist in their overhaul operations. 

Czech Airlines Technics provides 

NEOS with Electronic Flight Bag installation 

Czech Airlines Technics provided NEOS 

Airlines with Electronic Flight Bag installation 

on a Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft. The 

modification has been completed within TAT 

(turnaround time) of 7 days, from March 

28th to April 3rd. This was CSAT’s first successful 

modification, with two more aircraft 

from NEOS to come in the second half of 

April and the first half of May respectively. 

AJ Walter Aviation substantially increases 

investment in Miami 

A J Walter Aviation continues to ramp up its 

investment in the Americas with a substantial 

increase in service-ready Boeing and Airbus 

component inventory, held onshore in North 

America at its facilities in Miami and Los Angeles. 

This inventory is supported by extensive 

replenishment from other global AJW 

inventory hubs and has initially been identified 

separately, as A J Walter Aviation Inc., 

on the Inventory Locator Service (ILS) system. 

This decision reflects the Company’s ongoing 

commitment to build-up onshore inventory 

levels at its Miami base and other developing 

hubs across North America, with over 

$50m worth of parts now allocated to support 

AJW’s growing PBH/Power-By-the-Hour, 

pooling, leasing, AOG and regular services in 

the region. The investment has been essential 

since AJW has seen its business double 

year-on-year for the past three years, as more 

airlines and MROs choose the Company to 

provide flexible and innovative solutions tailored 

to their operational requirements. 

AAR introduces new aircraft engine 

fuel pump maintenance and repair 

service 

AAR is now offering maintenance, repair 

and overhaul services for aircraft engine 

fuel pumps, expanding its portfolio of MRO 

services to the aviation, government and 

defense industries. The repairs will be performed 

at AAR’s Aircraft Component Services 

facility in Garden City, New York. “Add- 

• Goodrich Corporation signed a nacelle services agreement with LOT Polish Airlines, for support of the nacelles and thrust reversers 

for the airline’s fleet of Embraer 195 aircraft, powered by CF34-10E engines. The five-year Prime Solutions nacelle services agreement 

will be managed through Goodrich’s Prestwick Service Center in Scotland, which provides support for LOT Polish Airlines’ growing fleet 

of Embraer aircraft. Under the agreement, Goodrich will provide nacelle maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for the thrust 

reversers, inlet cowls and other nacelle components. Similarly, Goodrich will also provide access to large nacelle components for lease 

or exchange. 

• Goodrich was selected by Southwest Airlines to supply wheels, carbon brakes, MRO services and comprehensive asset management 

for its new fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The first aircraft was delivered in March of 2012. Goodrich’s 737 Next Generation carbon 

brake uses proprietary DURACARB carbon heat sink material. The DURACARB carbon provides exceptional brake performance and a 

35% brake life advantage over competitive equipment. The Goodrich wheels and carbon brakes provide a weight savings of approximately 

700 pounds (318kg) per aircraft compared to high capacity steel brakes.

TUI Travel purchases Boeing’s Maintenance 

Performance Toolbox for entire

TUI Travel PLC announced the purchase of 

Boeing’s Maintenance Performance Toolbox

on TUI Travel’s entire Boeing fleet, 

including 737-800s, 737 Classics, 757-200s,

Chilean Air Force signs MOU for F110 service agreement 

The Fuerza Aerea de Chile (FACH) signed a memorandum of understanding 

(MOU) for a Supply Based Logistics contract to support 

F110-GE-129 engines for its GE-powered Lockheed Martin 

F-16 fleet. Under terms of the agreement, GE will provide spare 

parts, line and shop replaceable units through 2016. “This MOU 

underscores the longstanding relationship we have enjoyed with 

the FACH starting with the arrival of J85 engines in 1976,” said 

Alberto Frauenberg, Latin America sales manager for GE Aviation. 

“This relationship has continued to evolve with the introduction 

of the F110, which has capably served the Chilean Air 

Force since 2004.” 

Eurocopter to supply six EC725 combat search and rescue 

helicopters to PT Dirgantara Indonesia for customization 

and delivery to Indonesian Air Force 

A contract was signed between Eurocopter and PT Dirgantara Indonesia/Indonesian 

Aerospace for the supply of six EC725. To be 

received in 2014, Indonesian Aerospace will customize and deliver 

these combat search and rescue configured helicopters to 

the Indonesian Air Force under a contract signed with the Indonesian 

Ministry of Defence last month. The aircraft, for delivery 

from Eurocopter starting in 2014, will be shipped to Indonesian 

Jetairfly, Thomson Airways and TUIfly Nordic 

in Europe and its joint venture Sunwing Airlines 

in Canada – to improve their dispatch 

reliability through the use of e-enabled technologies 

that run on the system. TUI Travel 

will operate Toolbox under a five-year subscription 

which covers the Library, Systems, 

Authoring and Tasks modules. 

AirBaltic and Sabena technics develop 

cooperation to include thrust 

reversers 

Sabena technics and airBaltic, which have 

already been cooperating on component 

repair for some years, decided to extend 

their successful collaboration to aircraft 

structures repair. Within the scope of this 

contract, Sabena technics will provide loans 

and repairs to airBaltic for its B737 CFM56- 

3 thrust reversers. In order to guarantee its 

customer a high level of reliability, Sabena 

technics’ aircraft structure division offers a 

large array of thrust reverser spares across 

many aircraft types for loans or standard exchanges 

accompanied by high quality and 

competitive prices for repair and overhaul. 

PART and Boeing announce agreement 

on GoldCare program 

Pacific Aerospace Resources & Technologies 

(PART) announced its agreement with 

Boeing in terms of its GoldCare program 

to perform MRO Maintenance Services and 

Aircraft Transition Services, which includes 

all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance 

activities at PART’s facilities in Victorville, 

California, USA. Boeing defines all of these 

services either independently or with its customers. 

This is in accordance with Boeing’s 

Maintenance Planning Document (MPD) or 

Boeing Customer’s Operating Maintenance 

Manual and PART’s approved Regulatory 

Manuals. 

These services will apply to the Boeing 787 

Dreamliner, the long anticipated 747-8 and 

all Boeing aircraft included in the Boeing 

Aircraft Transition Services program. This 

agreement is for a time span of ten years 

with an initial five year contract with annual 

renewal options thereafter. 

FL Technics further expands line 

maintenance network 

FL Technics announced the official opening 

of its line maintenance station in Manas International 

Airport, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The 

Bishkek station will offer on-call, scheduled 

and overnight line maintenance and engineering 

services for regional and mainline carriers 

24/7. The company also provides spare parts 

and components’ supply products, including 

PBH solutions for any type of aircraft. 

All remote Line stations have 24/7 communication 

support of FL Technics Engineering 

department and the AOG Support Helpline 

to deal with different MRO issues at any time 

and any place. FL Technics global network of 

line maintenance stations now covers 26 airports 

in Europe, the CIS and Asia-Pacific. 

Aerospace’s facility in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, where they 

will be reassembled and customized before delivery to the Indonesian 

Air Force under a contract signed, between the Ministry of 

Defence and Indonesian Aerospace, on 12th March 2012. The 

EC725, a combat-proven multi-role helicopter in the 11-ton class, 

was selected by the Air Force in 2011 to meet its requirements for 

a Combat Search and Rescue capable helicopter fleet.

Etihad Airways adds 500,000 passengers 

as revenues surge 28% in first 

quarter 

Etihad Airways continued its industry-leading 

growth in the first quarter of 2012, with a 

28% rise in revenue to $989m over the corresponding 

period in 2011 and passenger 

numbers soaring by 500,000 to 2.4m. The 

airline said revenue passenger kilometres 

(RPKs) rose during the first quarter by 26.6% 

to 10.9bn, thanks to growth in capacity 

through new routes, additional frequencies, 

increased seat capacity and strengthening 

load factors. Passenger load factor jumped 

by 3.8 points to 76.5%, the highest first 

quarter level in the airline’s history. 

DVB welcomes new shareholding 

partners in TES Holdings 

DVB Bank SE (DVB) signed an agreement 

with the Mitsubishi Corporation, Tokyo, Japan 

(MC) and the Development Bank of Japan, 

Tokyo, Japan (DBJ), pursuant to which 

MC and DBJ will acquire a 35.0% share and 

a 25.0% share respectively in TES Holdings 

Ltd., Bridgend, United Kingdom, from DVB. 

The agreement is subject to required antitrust 

clearance. TES Holdings (TES or “the 

Company”) is the parent company of the TES 

Aviation Group, a leading aircraft engine solutions 

provider. The agreement reached with 

MC and DBJ follows an extensive strategic review 

of the business by DVB, and the decision 

to seek new partners to join DVB to support 

TES’ next stage of development under the 

continued leadership of its chief executive 

officer Ashley Cooper. It is expected that the 

addition of two such prestigious shareholders, 

each with ambitious plans in the sector, 

will bring new business dimensions and opportunities 

for TES, as each shareholder seeks 

to leverage their own relationships and infrastructure 

for the benefit of the Company. 

Currently DVB indirectly holds 92.1% of the 

shares in TES Holdings. At completion DVB 

will first acquire the remaining 7.9% of the 

shares and then sell in aggregate 60.0% of 

the shares to MC and DBJ. Post completion, 

DVB will remain the largest shareholder in TES 

Holdings at 40.0%, with MC at 35.0% and 

DBJ at 25.0%. DVB first purchased a majority 

shareholding in TES in 2007 and the Company 

has subsequently grown from a turnover 

of $20m in 2007 to over $100m in 2011. 

Pinnacle Airlines files for Chapter 11 

Pinnacle Airlines Corp. and its subsidiaries 

have filed voluntary petitions for relief under 

Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy 

Code in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court 

for the Southern District of New York (the 

“Court”). Pinnacle intends to use the Chapter 

11 process to continue implementing 

a comprehensive turnaround plan aimed 

at addressing its operational and financial 

challenges. Pinnacle expects to accomplish 

several key initiatives during the restructurling 

process to help ensure that it returns to 

profitability and remains viable over the long 

term as the regional airline industry continues 

to contract and transform. These initiatives 

include restructuring its key operating 

agreements with Delta Air Lines, winding 

down its operations with United Airlines, 

completing the wind-down of its Essential 

Air Service (EAS) flying with US Airways, 

achieving cost savings from its workforce, 

identifying additional opportunities across 

the organization to reduce costs, and ensuring 

that it has the appropriate fleet, staffing 

levels and network to operate profitably on 

an ongoing basis. 

San Miguel acquires minority stake in Philippine Airlines and Air Philippines

Chile’s LAN Airlines cleared the final obstacle 

in its move to merge with Brazil’s TAM 

following a Chilean Supreme Court ruling 

issued last week that rejected the carrier’s 

appeal of three mitigation measures handed 

down by the country’s Anti-Trust court 

last year. The merger is now expected to 

be finalized next month, creating the largest 

airline in Latin America and one of the 

world’s 10 largest in terms of revenue. 

Air Canada reported a system load factor of 

81.5% for the month of March, versus 79.5% 

in March 2011, an increase of 2.0 percentage 

points. System traffic increased 4.8% on a 

system-wide capacity increase of 2.2%. 

Alaska reported a 4.7% increase in traffic 

on a 3.0% increase in capacity compared to 

March 2011. This resulted in a 1.4-point increase 

in load factor to a record 88.8%. 

American Airlines reported a March load 

factor of 82.5%, an increase of 2.2 points 

versus the same period last year. Traffic increased 

by 1.3%, while capacity was lower 

by 1.4% year-over-year. 

American Eagle reported a March traffic 

increase of 6.0% year-over-year as capacity 

decreased 0.9%. March load factor was 

75.9%, an increase of 5.0 points compared 

to the same period last year. 

Delta reported that March 2012 consolidated 

traffic increased 2.0% on a 3.4% reduction 

in capacity compared to the previous 

year. This resulted in a 4.4 point improvement 

in load factor to 84.1%. 

San Miguel Corporation, the Philippines’ most-diverse conglomerate, said last week that it had signed a deal with billionaire businessman 

Lucio Tan that will give the company minority stakes in two Philippine airlines owned by Tan. San Miguel will invest $500m in 

exchange for as much as 49% each in Philippine 

Airlines (PAL) and its low-cost partner 

Air Philippines (Air Phil). The deal will give 

San Miguel management control over the 

country’s largest carrier. 

Philippine Airlines reported a comprehensive 

loss of Philippine peso (Ps) 3.6bn ($84.3m) 

for the nine months to 31 December 2011, 

a reversal from the profit of Ps 3.2bn reported 

a year before, despite a 2% increase in 

revenue to Ps 55.2bn for the 2011 period. 

This resulted from higher expenses and an 

unfavourable exchange rate as well as a 

sharp drop in non-operating income.

Horizon reported a 15.2% decline in March 

traffic on a 14.3% decline in capacity compared 

to March 2011. This resulted in a 0.8point 

decrease in load factor to 78.3%. 

IAG’s March 2012 traffic rose by 6.2% versus 

March 2011, while capacity was up 1.1% 

compared to the previous year. Load factor 

for March was up 3.3 points to 78.8%. 

Norwegian (NAS) reported that traffic in 

March 2012 increased 22%, while capacity 

was up 17% compared to the previous year. 

The load factor was 78%, up 3.0 points 

compared to March 2011. 

Porter Airlines’ March load factor grew 

10.2 points, to 59.8% compared to the previous 

year. March traffic increased44.8%, 

while capacity increased 20%. 

Ryanair released that March traffic dropped 

4% compared to the previous year, while 

the load factor fell 1.0 point to 78%. 

US Airways Group announced March traffic 

results. Mainline traffic for the month was up 

4.8% versus March 2011, while mainline capacity 

was up 3.3% versus March 2011. Mainline 

passenger load factor was a record 84.6% for 

the month of March, up 1.2 points. 

AAR subsidiary Nordisk in three-year deal with Emirates 

WestJet announced March traffic results 

with a load factor of 86.2%, up 1.4 points. 

Traffic increased 9% year over year, and capacity 

grew 7% over the same period. The 

airline flew nearly 104,000 more guests this 

March compared to March of last year. 

Aircraft interior specialist MacCarthy Aviation 

received its third consecutive order for 

complete galley units from aircraft completion 

company AMAC Aerospace (Switzerland). 

The contract, with completion due in 

May 2012, was awarded at Aircraft Interiors 

Expo, Hamburg. 

Monarch Aircraft Engineering Technical 

Training Academy (MAETTA) is to commence 

Boeing 787 training this year; investing 

$2.5m on state-of-the-art desk top 

training equipment. Based at London Luton 

Airport, the technical training academy will 

undergo a complete refurbishment providing 

several new classrooms and facilities for 

Composite and Fibre optic training, a technology 

that is now being employed on next 

generation aircraft. 

Nordisk Aviation Products, a subsidiary of AAR CORP., announced a new, three-year contract 

to supply nearly 6,000 Nordisk UltraLite AKE (LD3) and Nordisk TwinLite AKE (LD3) 

containers to Emirates Airlines. The agreement supports Emirates’ long-term commitment 

to improve fuel efficiency through lighterweight Unit Load Devices (ULDs) without 

comprising structural integrity. “Emirates has been committed to reducing the ULD tare 

weight of a number of years and we have been actively seeking suppliers who can help us 

to achieve our goal. At only 56 kg the Nordisk UltraLite AKE is by far the lightest alternative 

in the market today”, said Clive Clemson, vice president, Emirates Airport Services. 

Nordisk will supply nearly 6,000 UltraLite AKE containers (above) to Emirates Nordisk Aviation Products

EMRISE, a multi-national manufacturer 

of defense and aerospace electronic devices 

and communications equipment, received 

a $1.2m order for electronic devices 

and subsystems to be used in In-Flight 

Entertainment and Connectivity (IFE&C) 

systems to be installed in commercial 

aircraft. The order was received from a 

longstanding customer by the company’s 

Pascall Electronics Ltd. subsidiary 

in England and is expected to ship over 

a 12-month period starting in June 2012. 

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 

Component Control released that global 

customer AMETEK Aerospace & 

Defense’s MRO Division is continuing the 

rollout of Quantum Control to include its 

Antavia business in France. Scheduled for 

completion this summer, this facility will 

be the fifth AMETEK MRO implementation 

with Quantum Control since rollout 

began in 2010. AMETEK’s MRO Division 

locations running Quantum include High 

Standard Aviation (HSA) in Miami, FL, 

Muirhead Avionics and AEM, both based 

in the United Kingdom, and its Singapore 

MRO business. 

BOEING R&D CENTRE IN BRAZIL 

Boeing will establish Boeing Research & 

Technology-Brazil, a research and technology 

center in São Paulo that will work 

with the country’s leading researchers 

and scientists to develop aerospace technologies. 

Boeing Research & Technology- 

Brazil, which will open later this year will 

serve as a hub for collaboration between 

Boeing and Brazilian R&D organizations, 

including government agencies, privatesector 

companies and universities. 

“Boeing is defined by its technological 

edge, and establishing Boeing Research 

& Technology in Brazil will bring new 

ideas and innovative processes to our 

company,” said Donna Hrinak, president 

of Boeing Brazil. Areas of research 

focus for the new center will include 

sustainable aviation biofuels, advanced 

air traffic management, advanced metals 

and bio-materials, and support and 

services technologies. Boeing Research & 

Technology-Brazil will be Boeing’s sixth 

advanced research center outside the 

United States; the others are in Europe,

• Jean-Pascal Méo was appointed Eurocopter 

Group’s general counsel as of 2nd 

April 2012. He will replace Georges Richelme, 

who has been elected as president 

of the Commercial Court of Marseilles. 

At Eurocopter he will now oversee the 

institutional relations of the Group. Having 

joined Eurocopter in January 1998, 

following roles as legal advisor in a bank 

and a law firm of industrial property rights 

consultants, Méo, aged 46, was previously 

head of Corporate Matters within Eurocopter’s 

Legal Department. 

• Avianor Group announced that Virginia 

Taborda has joined the team as vice 

president of Corporate Sales and Strategy 

based in the company’s Mirabel headquarters, 

near Montreal, Quebec. 

• Rockton AB announced that Steven 

Lever has joined the company as head of 

Asset Management. He is based at Rockton’s 

headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden. 

Lever has over 20 years’ experience

• PAS Technologies appointed David W. Theis as its vice president, Business Development. 

In his new role, Theis assumes direct responsibility for the development of new business 

opportunities to expand PAS Technologies’ revenue generation for serving commercial, 

aero, and land-based aero-derivative-engine-repair markets. Theis is also responsible for 

certain non-rotating-equipment-related business development activities in the oil and gas 

exploration and production market. 

• Crane Co. announced the appointment of Robert (Bob) Tavares 

as president of the Electronics Group of Crane Aerospace & Electronics, 

and David Bender as president of the Aerospace Group of 

Crane Aerospace & Electronics. Crane Aerospace & Electronics is one 

of five segments of Crane Co., a diversified manufacturer of highly 

engineered industrial products with $2.5bn in sales. Previously, Bender
