translation <strong>of</strong> poetry.<br />

Logicians and semanticists attribute meaning to sign denotata. A<br />

sign may have one or more meaning according to its physical or non-<br />

physical denotatum. The relative variability <strong>of</strong> the meaning <strong>of</strong> a<br />

specific word is anticipated by the situational context in which it<br />

occurs. This accounts for the infinite flexibility <strong>of</strong> language use to<br />

cope with the infinite variety <strong>of</strong> human experience. Therefore, the<br />

linguistic garment in which the message is clothed must be<br />

appropriately tailored, otherwise it would look shapeless, loose or<br />

inadequate.<br />

Linguistics is commonly known as the scientific study <strong>of</strong> language.<br />

As such, it studies, analyses, and integrates the various components <strong>of</strong><br />

the linguistic phenomenon. By linguistic phenomenon I mean the verbal<br />

or non-verbal sequence <strong>of</strong> utterances or gestures. The minimal terrain<br />

<strong>of</strong> linguistics is the sentence, which may be roughly defined as a<br />

stretch <strong>of</strong> lexical items internally structured and organized to<br />

constitute a phonological, grammatical, syntactic and semantic whole.<br />

It is the gramwatical well-formedness <strong>of</strong> the sentence which invests it<br />

with signification. Unless the phonological, grammatical, syntactic,<br />

and semantic structures <strong>of</strong> the sentence are coherently integrated,<br />

there is every possibility that the meaning will be hardly<br />

intelligible. But is the sentence, upon which traditional linguistics<br />

is based, a proper vehicle for communication among humans? In other<br />

words, does intercommunication or trans-communication occur on the<br />
