We have taken major steps towards
food fortification. My good friend Mr-,
Johnny Khong Hun has helped us a lot
in the salt iodizahon program. We have
also metwith food manufacturers to ask
their help to fortify the products they sell
to the buying public. Food fortification
is really the basic strategy we mustadhere
to becausesupplementationwill notreally
solve the problem. Of course, our donor
agencies, especiallyUNICEF,have always
been with us, and beside us in this
undertaking.
While our department isa serviceoriented
organization, you in the private
sector, have to admit that you are on the
profit-oriented side. Buteven though you
are profit-oriented you also have service-
orientationand social orientation because
in this way, your products will be more
salable. We can work together. We will
help you in advocacy, and you will help.
will be helping the nation as a whole.
goal. This consultative meeting is a part
of a continuing dialogue between the
government and the private sector so that
we can forge a partnershipthatwill sustain
and improve the nutritional status of our
fellowmen. We encourage you therefore,
during this conference to give your views
and comments on the presentations of
our international and local experts which
we should consider both as a learning
process and an eye opener. We in
government, cannot solve the problems
alone, in the sameway thatyou, the private
sector cannot solve the problems of this
-country
alone. We need each other. So,
instead of the private sector asking: "what
Gin we do?" r maybe it's high time that
we should joinhandsand think andreflect
togetherso thatwe can solve theproblems
of our country, in terms of nutritional
status. We are not trying to solve the
5pratleys issue or the more controversial
issue of migrant workers. Let's justfocus
