In hydroelectric projects the resettlement of people represents one of the major impacts. There are not many<br />

opportunities for people to find employment <strong>and</strong> more people are affected by the project more difficult it<br />

becomes to assimilate them in the surrounding communities. For this reason a weight of 35 has be given to<br />

the criterion <strong>and</strong> the impact will be scored as described in the following Table 9.3.<br />

Most people in the rural areas walk to the neighbouring villages or to markets, while donkeys <strong>and</strong>/or horses<br />

are used to convey their products. A large water body may therefore completely cut them off form the<br />

markets <strong>and</strong> communities on the other side, which previously could be reached. For this reason a weight of<br />

15 will be given to the criterion <strong>and</strong> the impact will be scored as described in the following Table 9.4.<br />

Cultural impacts may be associated with the loss of churches, mosques, historical monuments,<br />

archaeological sites <strong>and</strong> cultural heritage areas. A weight of 10 will be given to the criterion <strong>and</strong> the impact<br />

will be scored as described in the following Table 9.5.<br />
