Scandic Food installs first of new generation Infusion Ultra
High Temperature (UHT) System
APV, an operating unit of Invensys plc, is currently commissioning
the first in a new generation of its highly successful Infusion Ultra High
Temperature (UHT) systems at a plant in Northern Denmark.
Jutland-based Scandic Food is the leading Danish manufacturer of vegetable
cream products, all of which are made from coconut oil or vegetable oil
rather than traditional dairy ingredients.
Scandic had been using an existing APV Infusion system, installed in 1973,
to maintain its 24 hour a day, 7 day a week production schedule. However, as

a result of increasing demand, the company realised that it needed to boost
capacity by between 4000 and 8000 l/h.
"We chose APV because they could be assured of giving us the best product
quality, and of course we were very satisfied with the existing
installation," explained Scandic Factory Manager Willy Bjerregaard. "We
also knew that an order placed in April would be up and running in time for
our tight deadline of the second week of July," he added.
APV’s new Infusion UHT system includes many adaptations designed to
meet the demands of both new and existing customers. In particular, new
safety shielding provides a safe environment and reduces noise by 50%, while
plexi-glass doors give easy access for plant maintenance. In addition, the
new integrated control panel is set on a slope to ensure the most ergonomic
use by operators.
The new system also boasts a more standardised design with greater
accentuation of the infusion and vacuum chamber, plus a solid outer frame.
Like its predecessor, the new Infusion UHT system works by means of direct
steam infusion into the product. This ensures that the temperature required
for UHT products is reached more quickly than by traditional methods, and an
exact measurement of the holding time is possible. Prolonged heating and
cooling at high temperatures, which would damage the product, are avoided.
With APV’s Infusion technology, the temperature is increased by
500-600ºC per second, making it possible to go from 75ºC to 143ºC in less

than 0.2 seconds. By accelerating the heat rate in this way, the chemical degradation is
minimised. Additionally, the process avoids direct contact
between product and hot surfaces, which lengthens the time between CIP
cycles.
Scandic Food is the first company to use the new system while a second is
currently under construction.
