After an interval <strong>of</strong> about a century <strong>and</strong> a half, Tenedos,<br />

probably in B.C. 189, regained her freedom, <strong>and</strong> began<br />

<strong>to</strong> issue flat tetradrachms on <strong>the</strong> Attic st<strong>and</strong>ard. A comparison<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> letters <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

art with those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earlier <strong>coins</strong> is highly instructive.<br />

14. Cyme. JR. Obv. Female head (<strong>the</strong> Amazon Cyme ?), bound with<br />

taenia. Bev. KYMAIQN. Bridled horse <strong>and</strong> one-h<strong>and</strong>led vase.<br />

In exergue, magistrate's name, KAAAIAZ. The whole in laurelwreath.<br />

Wt. 250 grs.<br />

The flat tetradrachms <strong>of</strong> this <strong>to</strong>wn begin, as elsewhere,<br />

in 189, when its freedom was confirmed.<br />

15. Myrina. JR. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Apollo. Eev. MYPINAIQN. Apollo,<br />

with lustral branch <strong>and</strong> patera. In front, omphalos <strong>and</strong> vase. The<br />

whole in laurel-wreath. Wt. 257 grs.<br />

The types <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>coins</strong> refer <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient oracle <strong>of</strong><br />

Apollo at Grynium, within <strong>the</strong> terri<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Myrina.<br />

Bev. EPY. Figure, in short chi<strong>to</strong>n, holding spear <strong>and</strong> pomegranate<br />

(?), <strong>and</strong> wearing headdress <strong>of</strong> Ephesian Artemis. Magis-<br />

trate's name in field. Wt. 43-5 grs.<br />

Erythree may have coined <strong>gold</strong> between B.C. 190 <strong>and</strong><br />

133, when it was in <strong>the</strong> enjoyment <strong>of</strong> full au<strong>to</strong>nomy, or<br />

during <strong>the</strong> Mithridatio War, B.C. 88-84.<br />

17. Heraclea. JR. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>na, wearing helmet richly<br />

ornamented with foreparts <strong>of</strong> horses, as on contemporary <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

A<strong>the</strong>ns. i?er. HPAKAEQTQN. Club, in oak-wreath ; symbol,<br />

Nike. Wt. 250-6 grs.<br />

The tetradrachms <strong>of</strong> this Ionian city (b.c. 190-133)<br />

were formerly attributed <strong>to</strong> Heraclea Sintica in Macedonia,<br />

but erroneously.<br />

18. Lebedus. JR. (96r. Head <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>na. i?a'. AEBEAION. Owl,<br />

on club, between cornucopiae. The whole in laurel-wreath. Magis-<br />

trate's name, AnOAAOAOTOZ. Wt. 255-5 grs.<br />

19. Magnesia. M. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Artemis. Bev. MArNHTON.<br />

Apollo beside tripod, on mae<strong>and</strong>er pattern. Magistrate's name,<br />

EYHMOZ riAYZANIOY. The whole in laurel-wreath. Wt.<br />
