These <strong>coins</strong>, with Corinthian types, belong <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

earlier years <strong>of</strong> Hiero's reign.<br />

209-5 grs.<br />

Philistis, only known from her <strong>coins</strong>, <strong>and</strong> from an inin<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>atre at Syracuse, was probably <strong>the</strong><br />

wife <strong>of</strong> Hiero. The <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> this queen are among <strong>the</strong><br />

most beautiful <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period <strong>to</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y belong.<br />

34. Sicily. JR. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Demeter, veiled, <strong>and</strong> wearing wreath<br />

<strong>of</strong> corn. Hev. ZIKEAIOTAN. Nike, in quadriga; above,<br />

monogram, which may st<strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Hiero <strong>of</strong> Syracuse.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> First Punic War, B.C. 241, <strong>the</strong><br />

whole isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Sicily was divided between Hiero <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Komans. These <strong>coins</strong> were probably struck for <strong>the</strong><br />

dominions <strong>of</strong> Hiero outside <strong>the</strong> terri<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Syracuse.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> assassination <strong>of</strong> Hieronymus, in B.C. 215, a<br />

republic was proclaimed at Syracuse. Nos. 36-39 were<br />

struck during <strong>the</strong> period which intervened between thia<br />

date <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> capture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city by <strong>the</strong> Romans under<br />

M. Marcellus, in B.C. 212
